Flourishers (KS)

Unread post by jerichoholic »

These will be launching a little later today on Kickstarter.

"This is a double backed deck of cards, with a blue back design on one side, and an orange one on the other. This is specifically for card flourishers and those who want to get into it! There will be some early backer bonuses right at 6pm EST so if you're interested, go check it out when its up!"

If I am correct this is what the Fontaine Futures from Zach Mueller will be. In fact i'm certain as the creator of this was supposed to be working on it with Zach.

Either way i'm sure the cardists will be all over these.

Cardist here. I'll be all over the fontaine futures but not these. The design doesn't really look professional imo.

I will not be having anything to do with zachmonkey's next deck, nor will I be having anything to do with these. I'm all for more playing cards targeted for cardists, but these aren't even playing cards. At least you can still play poker after you've worn out a deck. Plus, the LPCC being the printer for a cardistry centered deck is a minor turn off for me. This takes "minimalist" decks to an entire new low. So little effort was put into this deck that they didn't even bother with courts, aces, jokers, or pips..

The idea is that cardists don't like cards with faces on them, hence the NDO deck that came out a while back and the very plain faces on Devo decks.

I think the idea is nice in theory but I have yet to see a deck with that idea that I actually like.

Price tag is a little too much. With such a minimal design, I would expect a lower price tag.

This is the guy who came up with TFJ decks, honestly i dont think he has good taste in design which is his greatest downfall, the colour combination on that tuck box is ridiculous.

Even more so when you account for the fact that the printing costs for this Deck are as cheap as any design can get. The Back Cards are a 1-Color Blue Pantone and the Faces are a 1-Color Orange Pantone, and they would use the SAME Printing Plate for each side. The Tuck is only 2-Color (Blue and Orange), so this job would only need three Printing Plates altogether - one for the Cards and two for the Tuck. That would save a good chunk of money just on Printing Plates.

This would probably be one of the easiest production and printing jobs Legends would ever have!

Thanks, Randy

This deck, if you want to call it that, is ridiculous in my opinion. From price point up.

My good to say something is, I like blue and I like orange so pretty banner on the campaign page. :D
TL:DR It's completely up to you.
We can still be friends.
I actually like playing cards.

It definitely has limited appeal to only very select people.

I would also like to point out I could build a couple of decks of double back card decks out of ones I set aside when I open decks with such included. They would be the same back on each side but would be a similar effect...

I agree, the price is quite high for what it is...perhaps that is because of the small run.

I had plans to move forward with a similar deck for Cardists last February and tested it out with a select group of Cardists at Magic-Con in April 2014. They loved it, the contrasting colors made flourishes looks even more incredible than with a standard deck of playing cards.

Zach and I had a few meetings about it, but we both got pretty busy with other projects. The idea is strong, but I think if the price were a bit more comfortable it would make it an easier sell...probably around the $7-8 range.

Lastly, the target audience is really just so small compared to magicians and playing card collectors...just makes it harder to move product the same way. I'd like to see this succeed as I think it's a great direction for Cardistry and will open up the door for more creativity and new flourishes designed around double-back decks.

If these were even $10 shipped for one, I might jump in but realistically, $14 for 2, instead of 1, plus shipping would be more reasonable.

I don't think this is necessarily true. Certain displays require Aces or court cards. False cuts and shuffles require regular spot cards and court cards so that you would know they were false.

I remember a video from Ellusionist Kent where he broke open a new deck and turned them face up and spread them out on a table to show it was a complete, regular deck. He then did an uncut, unedited cardistry routine that was like 7 minutes of continuous, non-stop cardistry. He was doing these complex cuts and moves we've never seen before up to that point and he was incredibly fast and smooth. Towards the end, I was thinking, "Damn, he made this loooong video in one take and didn't make a mistake." Then, at the very end of the video, he turns the deck over face up again and spreads them out on a table...and the cards were still in new deck order! I thought my head was going to explode - every single cut and shuffle in that ridiculously long routine was false, and the fact that he maintained control of the order throughout that whole routine to retain that new deck order was incredible. Without face cards, you wouldn't have been able to fully appreciate the technical impact of that routine.

If the Virts didn't like face cards, they wouldn't have had any on their Virtuoso deck, which is specifically designed to be a cardistry deck. But not only does their cardistry deck have face cards, the Virts went to the time and effort to make them fully custom.
