Christian icons from the byzantine art form. I mean compare that mustasche to this one.
So, the Heritage theme... The Heritage theme... Could it be a tribute to our artistic heritage? The byzantine art form, the Renaissance, and the Baroque etc?

Yes, I might be the guy you remember from that thing at that place way back when.

Re: "ICONS" playing cards - coming early 2015
The Safavid period (1501-1722) - Safavid dynasty...Hmmm?
Thats my guess.. I know earlier periods in Persian history have been mentioned but this is considered a rebirth.....

Re: "ICONS" playing cards - coming early 2015
Sometimes the easiest answers are the right ones? I'm going with this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/China:_Th ... _an_Empire" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;Lotrek wrote:The decks in the series will have different themes but all will have something in common, justifying them being a trilogy. Some guesses are close, some aren't, Not very helpful, eh?
So, how about a little contest? I believe that all clues are in the first post of this thread. Who guesses first the exact theme of the deck will get a pair for free. Mike, you're disqualified from the beginning!
Theme: Chinese monarchs.

My head hurts
One last stab at it. The series is reworkings of old standard courts from different countries (Heritage Series)
The King looks familiar (De La Rue) so the first deck is from The British empire c.1880`s

I was thinking The same thing... But he said the first post had the clues. Which rebirth and heritage could be the clues. I printed out the icons graphic and was looking at it from ever direction to look for clues.Jock1971 wrote:My head hurts

Re: "ICONS" playing cards - coming early 2015
Has anyone guessed the British Empire yet? Talk about a long lasting empire with lots of heritage... after all just how far back can the monarchy be traced, back to around 900AD IIRC?
The various decks could be the different families that have held the throne, Windsors, Tudors, Stuarts, Yorks etc...
Then again, he said rebirth so I guess that's all bunk. But hey, if anyone wants to run with that idea, you can take and run with it if I get a free deck or two.
Edit: So, looking at the pic Lotrek posted, the IC, O, and NS are separated, could they represent the three parts of or different empires / caliphates?

And the winner is.... ROUSSELLE!
Although Eoghann was very close, Rousselle was the first to use the wort "Byzantine" and his description of what Byzantine Empire was, is very accurate.
Since the release of the deck is still a bit far, I think that Rousselle and those who guessed very close won't object in me sending them now a signed print of the King of Clubs.

This is my first time commenting because this whole time I didn't bother to read the thread because I thought it was about the other deck by Benji Taylor.

Pretty close. The Heritage theme is about great artistic traditions that influenced European art or flourished in Europe. The common element will be the "standard" courts, interpreted in those artistic styles.Marcus wrote: So, the Heritage theme... The Heritage theme... Could it be a tribute to our artistic heritage? At least we kept ourselves within reason this time around. The Venexiana Gold teaser thread got really weird really fast that time.

I thought the teaser was cool, but man, that card is simply fantastic Lotrek! I love the pips midway through on the border, but if I'm being honest, I'm not really feeling the lettering. It's distracting, and I already know it's the king of clubs. Plus it's in English, kinda useless for someone that doesn't speak the language.
Other than that, pure awesomeness.

Thanks Chach
That lettering is a very typical characteristic of Byzantine art. They used to write the name of the saint on the left or right side of the head and I see it more as a graphic element and I don't really care if it's easily read. I like it a lot and I'll be sorry if I have to drop it.

I think the lettering would work down the sides where you put the extra club currently and you could still have a nice big pip! Best of both worlds?Lotrek wrote:Thanks Chach

I think the purpose of having the words there is to emulate the iconic style. I think it's easy enough to see the pips below the indices, but if it's absolutely terrible for everyone to figure out or see quickly, maybe the words could be outlined by the pip instead of being moved or replaced.

Bah. Not every deck has to conform to every single little rule we come up with.
I think we can allow some artistic liberty as long as it stays functional.
Can't wait to see some queens.
