OK, Jackson. For the next campaign I want you to take it to the next level. Shoot a video of you getting your head shaved the same way you did this time, but while saying everything about the campaign backwards. Then flip the video and sound so that we can watch you talk about the campaign while having your hair reattached magically.
Yes, I might be the guy you remember from that thing at that place way back when.

I could be more. Why is Jackson's Kickstarter under the category "Design"? It's not even under a sub-category like Graphic Design. It's just "Design" Why make it hard for Joe Schmo to find your cards?
Kickstarter recently made a sub-category just for us. The sub-category is called "Playing Cards" and you're nowhere to be found.
I guess Jackson wants to be different. "Is that you John Wayne? Is this me?"

More people look in the design and graphic design categories than the playing card sub-category. Why limit yourself to a small audience?

And - as of about 30 minutes ago, now - it's funded! Time to start looking for some stretch goals! I gotz me a 4-way set with brick box. Those boxes hold 15 decks, by the way - easily. I suppose I'll have to keep one of those Black Ops display decks out to play, eh?

@Jackson -You have a fantastic back design. I say that because you have all the things we hate. I see text and ribbons, but you made it work. Hopefully, future artists look at your back and see the foundation of a perfect 2 element mirrored card. You need to make a fan of your back. I bet you could raise another $10,000 if ppl on kickstarter saw your fan. That not any old star. That's a corner badge Texas star. And your use of negative space is piercing terrific. Show your back; It's like the AoS. Ppl want to see the whole thing...

Honestly this isn't Jackson's greatest back design by far, it's lacking the intricacy and depth that the previous decks that he has produced possessed. Not just your opinion, the whole thing seems lacking compared to previous projects. I'm still buying them but they're not up to par of the earlier Fed 52 releases. Some may see the negative space as 'striking'. I see it as wasted opportunity begging to be filled in.volantangel wrote:Honestly this isn't Jackson's greatest back design by far, it's lacking the intricacy and depth that the previous decks that he has produced possessed. I get the feeling that he tried to make it simpler, but only did so in the layout. The artwork is still the same style, there's just less of it.
I'm getting a few as well btw, but I passed on the Black Ops decks. Been passing on more and more LE's lately, and I just didn't feel any need to get these in addition to the 2 standards.

Re: United States ARMY deck - by Kings Wild - Funded on KS!
3 Kings Wild project in a row I'm not in for. Only one I really wanted was Brendon's deck but not for that price.
His pricing on this one is higher than people realize when you consider that the LE deck is really $30 although you do get the "free" extra deck. Even without the pricing though, I wouldn't be in. The design doesn't really work for me and I'm not such a huge armed forces fan that I need to be in one this one. On the plus side it will save me a fortune from not having to get all of the expected 15-odd decks that will eventually comprise this series.
Wanted to say that it's great to see Jackson back and participating again. Certainly hope that continues.

I think the pricing on the Black Ops decks is fair, and comparably lower than other gilded deck prices that have been offered recently. I think it also notable that the USPCC will be doing the gilding. Knowing that the Black Ops Edition would have a much more expensive production cost is why I worked to put in the much less expensive standard deck for those who didn't feel the $30 black ops pair was a good value.Strag wrote:3 Kings Wild project in a row I'm not in for. Re: United States ARMY deck - by Kings Wild - Funded on KS!
I should clarify that I do think the pricing is fair and I love of the "extra" deck, looking forward to getting my Indepencence ones. It's really just more that this particular deck design is not for me. I'll certainly be keeping an open mind for others in the series and I'm somewhat hopeful that the Navy series will include ships as part of the court card designs. The talk on the KS for the Army deck about an "Equipment" deck certainly has stirred my interest.JacksonRobinson wrote:I think the pricing on the Black Ops decks is fair, and comparably lower than other gilded deck prices that have been offered recently. Re: United States ARMY deck - by Kings Wild - Funded on KS!
Strag...I, too, think that the Army deck may be polarizing to a decent number of your regular playing card collectors if they aren't in to military (Army) items, but it's Jackson's art nonetheless and still VERY desired for that reason. I also think the $30 Black Ops deck is a great price point and, judging from the quality of the Independence deck (and his previous decks) this one certainly won't disappoint.Strag wrote:3 Kings Wild project in a row I'm not in for. Also, as you have said Strag, it is good for Jackson to be back in the forums...if I were a deck designer though, I'm not sure I want to have everything I do scrutinized down the tiniest of details, which is why he probably stayed away for awhile. I guess the more popular you are, the more you open yourself up to scrutiny.
I am DEF a supporter of our military, but not into Army/Navy themed items, but I love these decks. I really really really like the #303 deck. Can't wait to see what he does with the equipment deck. Should look great.

Re: United States ARMY deck - by Kings Wild - Funded on KS!
I'm glad the courts are custom, but it doesn't wow me like Reserve Note. Perhaps nothing will, and that's OK. It's rare that somebody can improve with every subsequent project, doesn't matter if it's cards, sports anybody's job or every day life. There will always be hits and misses, but most will be somewhere in the middle. It's almost never a state of continuous improvement and hitting bigger and bigger home runs every time. This isn't a miss, but it's not the best either. It's worthy though and that's enough.
Because of all this, I couldn't justify the black ops. I think the courts look worse with the 2 color look and don't really care for the tuck. The gilded edges would be cool, but not $30 cool just for that. HOWEVER, if the premium deck was the gilded version and that price then maybe, but as a single deck collector that opens my deck the display deck doesn't mean much other than I would have a bonus deck to use for card games. I just went for a single premium, mostly just for the tuck and the back. I actually like the crisp clean look without too much going on and the black/white contrast really shows off the artwork.
I'm actually really glad I'm not so in love with it because it saves me money that I'll need for the rest in the series. Jackson, I certainly you hope you continue with these themes and looks for each entry in the series so the premiums (and the base/black ops) from each deck have the same look. Because I do love the premium look and will be getting the rest! Great work.

I kind wish the Black Ops deck was reversed out to black. I'm a sucker for black decks (i.e. Tendrils, Artifice Apex, etc.) and the Black Ops deck would've been perfect for that I think. The blacked out deck with the gold gilded edges would be hot!

Re: United States ARMY deck - by Kings Wild - Funded on KS!
I honestly think a gilded Premium deck would be the BEST. I originally designed the Black Ops deck to have a slightly different design but had to punt on the direction when USPCC told me I couldn't have full bleed printing with gilded decks as the Gilding process would melt the ink on the edge.
This is an image of an early on Black ops card design.

I told myself that I was only get ONE of the decks of the series. I knew I would have the self control.
Until I visited the KS page. I very quickly became wrong about myself. Took the $50 tier.

Re: United States ARMY deck - by Kings Wild - Funded on KS!
I love this series, but there are a couple of aspects that I think could be better:
1. The standard deck has too much green on the red suits. For playability, the index/pip really needs to be red. The way the original Fed 52 deck used a lot of green, but kept red for the index/pips was great. And that red is a great shade. The Indy red shade is a bit duller, not that easy to make out in a poker game in a not well lit room.
2. The names on the cards in the premium and black-ops decks takes away from the design. Also, part of the fun of the fed 52 series was showing folks the cards and having them guess who it is. The Independence decks names were better -- less of a big block in the middle of the cards.
3. No unique courts with full color. The Holmes Edition is the best of the Sherlock set because of the great use of color. The QoH is amazing. This was not obvious when looking at cards on the screen, but once I received the decks I wished I had bought less of the other decks and many more Holmes.

Re: United States ARMY deck - by Kings Wild - Funded on KS!
I have no problem with bringing back the red in the standard deck. I wasn't that sold to the metallic green. I bring it back and post some pics. I do however want to keep the monochromatic green feel on the courts. It will make for a great family if standard decks when I have competed all the branches.bamabenz wrote:I love this series, but there are a couple of aspects that I think could be better:

I expected this project to do over 100k. I wonder why it's stuck around 67k? I never seen a kicktraq expected projection look like this:

Almost certainly, fatigue is setting in.StanKindLee wrote:Market saturation causing a bubble deflation?
I would also be surprised if the International is as high on this one. This is one of the few of Jackson's I haven't pledged for.

Well, if you looked at jackson's past projects, its 116k for independence (4 decks, 2 LEs, 30k ave per deck), 100k sherlock (5decks, 1LE, 20k average), Fed 52 part 2 188k (6decks, 1 LE, 30k average), Fed 52 part 1 150k (4 decks, 35k average)
Well you see a general decline, but i see it more of a reflection of how well the decks are designed. 66k for 3 decks with 18days to go isnt too bad, this will likely make 80k at the end of the campaign. But its hardly a big hit given how big the army fanbase is.

You do get the feeling that the grunts don't really know about the deck - you'd imagine it would be super popular with those in the service and their families...
