Kids Deck by Justin Meitz Now live on KS

Unread post by Justin Meitz »

I thought I would quickly share a little bit about the Kids Deck before the launch tomorrow.

The Kids Deck is a deck of cards specifically designed for kids and magicians. 3 decks in total, a Red & Blue backed deck and an alphabet/number deck called the ABC123 Deck.

The Red & Blue Deck contains 52 beautifully hand drawn cards done in a kids style, two fun jokers, and a double backed blue/red gaff card.

The ABC123 Deck was spawned from my time as an elementary school teacher which includes alphabet cards (A-Z) and numbers (1-26). Kids will be able to practice multiplication with the numbers and memory games with the letters. And magicians will no longer need to use boring black block letters when magically spelling a persons name.

There is a lot more I could share but I since we launch tomorrow I will let you check out the rest in the Kickstarter page. Thanks for the support everyone!

They're adorable but I can't get over the fact that a grown man did these. Looks incredibly authentic.

Well i sure hope there are alot of kids, or parents with kids on KS when you launch then. Not sure if parents would think that playing cards are the best medium for a toddler to play with.

You could have something going for you if the drawings were done by kids for kids. But then again it doesnt look like thats the case. All the best for your campaign, and you are really going to need it.

He mentioned in his intro thread that actual kid drawings would've been ideal but there was a lot of red tape involved so it wasn't viable.

That is a great question...magic :)

Unfortunately I can't go in and change it since someone has already backed that tier. I guess at this point if you choose that tier you are getting a $2 break on shipping. Thanks for posting this and let me know if you see any other mistakes.

You can close the old tier by adjusting quantity available to the number of current pledges, then open a new tier.

Don't think there is much chance these will hit $30,000, there has been a major downfall in most funding of decks on KS lately, lots of failures and most of them have a third or half of the funding of this one. Doesn't seem like a good time to be launching decks on KS. Maybe the tide has finally turned and people are starting to cut back on spending?

Have you helped fund it? I have found most of the people that say that these won't be funded haven't helped back the project.

I guess thats an official challenge :)

I think the point is $30K for a 3 deck project from a first time creator is going to be a big ask. I would have thought you would have been better off with a smaller goal and have additional decks as stretch goals, but even then you might not hit it. It's not the kind of project that is going to attend to appeal to collectors so you definitely have to do some promotion in other places, particularly amongst educators and parents. Good luck!

Makes sense and I was never trying to reach the hardcore collectors :) I was just asked to put up a post about the Kids Deck here. Thanks.

Cannot speak for anyone else but after a scam too many on kickstarter I for one stopped funding/ buying decks there as it is just too high risk, due to their hands off approach towards creator accountability. Just totted up my average over 30 odd projects which was just over $100 a project (a brick with shipping), so you don't have to disenfranchise too many backers like me and it becomes much harder to hit targets. I am spending it, just elsewhere (cardlauncher.com I hope...)

I really like this deck by the way.

Trust is a huge thing, and its too bad that other people have ruined your opinion of kickstarter and current projects. You can trust in the fact that I have put out other items like my picture books which you can find at B&N and instructional dvd's for magicians. This is what I do and if I say I am going to do something...I do it!

Yes Kids Kards is much different as its a mental photography deck which means you cannot give it out, let your spectators handle it, and of course not let kids handle it.

@Strag - You might be right on this one. 3 decks is very ambitious. Maybe it might fit the mold better with 3 decks if he went with MPC first and first start with a low goal and upgraded to EPCC and finally to USPCC in stretch goals. According to MPC prices With 3 decks of a 1000 decks each he could make them for $6930 with the lowest grade stock and of course with shipping cost the goal would be higher... Do I think he will make it to $30,000? Probably not. Or he could make less decks like 500 decks of each and already be funded currently...

I think the problem with that Sprouts is those types of stretch goals don't seem to work. People tend to pledge because they know a deck is going to be USPCC and likely would wait... which means the stretch goal wouldn't be hit. Doing one deck at a time works more.. but without the collector market (not to say that it won't appeal to any collectors, just not the majority) it will be hard to get the momentum with a big marketing effort. I think the deck is cool, just not to my taste as a collector and my son is far too old for itt o be useful otherwise.
