Re: Bird Deck by Lux Playing Cards
if the back design was actually a rectangle and had thinner borders, I might consider it but like this, no thanks.

I like the back but I wish it could take up much more space than it currently does.
I don't get the one way courts. Is that male and female I guess? I don't know much about birds except a hen is a girl and a rooster is a boy.

Re: Bird Deck by Lux Playing Cards
I like how colorful this deck is and I don't mind the bird theme. If the designer doesn't put a border on the back design, then at least make the design bigger so it fills up more space. The way it is now, you would get the most boring blank fans. I'm on the fence about the non-mirrored court cards. On the one hand, I appreciate that it takes more effort to do what he did as opposed to simply mirroring the courts. But on the other hand, some of the courts halves are so different from their other half that it might be distracting or confusing.

Re: Bird Deck by Lux Playing Cards
One again, I agree 100% with the Jin. Nice art and colors, but definitely fill out the back more by enlarging the design. Not quite decided on the 1-way/2-way courts, other than obviously I approve of the full customization. I am tending to fall on the side of different/unique is better, however...sinjin7 wrote:I like how colorful this deck is and I don't mind the bird theme. The "1-way" courts are fine. He can do that if he wants too. I guess it kind of tells a story, but the back of card needs some work. I wonder what his fan will look like? Blank: Blank:

Re: Bird Deck by Lux Playing Cards
Well, he is a she, and Karina (Russian) has a lot going for her, but the first three things that jump put at me are
1) less white space on the backs
2) more color overall
3) I like the male/female dichotomy on the courts
Your mileage WILL vary, I think it has a lot of potential!
Oddly enough, a Prototype of this deck arrived in the morning nail.

I like the courts but, like everyone else I wish there wasn't so much white space on the back.

I think that the male/female courts are interesting and really ties in with the theme. But the name of the deck has to be wayy more unique, surely you can do better than bird !

Looks pretty cool but I agree, the back design has too much white space, and unless it gets changed, i'll pass.

Re: Bird Deck by Lux Playing Cards
Second look. I like the club. It's high and fat like what I am now. She could make the suits in the indices a bit bigger like the club. At least the same size as the rank of the card like in the "K" we see here.
If she made the suits bigger in the indices, I don't think she would need a suit indicator in this spot. I thought people loved this spot for suit indicators, corner badges, and false borders, but chalk on another one. Negative space.
The club in the indices would take over the role of suit indicator. But I'm starting to think she likes negative space which is fine, but o'Lord that back. That is to much negative space in the wrong place. Keep the feathers you got, but add some kind of badge of feathers in the corners. You can have a negative space between the badges or elements.

Re: Bird Deck by Lux Playing Cards
Hey everyone! Karina is a fantastic artist, and her work on these birds is amazing. To update you on the back of the card, the design will take up more room than what is shown in the shot here so that there is less white space. I'll get you some updated pictures. Also, was thinking that "Pluma" would be a cool name for the deck instead of "Bird" as it is a bit more creative, not to mention that it is translated into "Feather" for both Latin and Spanish. In addition, it is short for "Plumage" which of course is English for the layer and arrangement of feathers that cover a bird. I love the input and thoughts you all have had, so I think these things will make the deck even better. The actual art of the birds themselves is really amazing. LUX is Latin for "Light" so I love the Pluma name as well. - Bryan

Pluma is good, but bear in mind there is already decks with that name...

Maybe "Avis" if you like the Latin transations?

How about Penna - Latin for a contour feather (the type used for quills)

Peter Hightowers from FB suggested "Volantis":
"How about The Volantis Deck? Its the Latin plural for birds: volans, volantis N M 3 3 M [FXXDM]
mercury (element); flying/soaring things, birds (pl.);"

Re: Bird Deck by Lux Playing Cards
Great suggestions on the deck formerly known as Bird. I'm thinking "AVES" which is plural for "bird" in Latin (instead of singular "Avis")... also, "AVES" is the scientific classification for birds, which is really cool. http://www.birds.com/species/classifications/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - Also, yes the card back is being modified to reduce the white space. The feather arrangement itself is amazing on the card back, so making some design modifications to its placement will enhance everything. Thanks everyone!

Haha, I could've sworn I had typed a message suggesting Aves (birds in Spanish) last night. Guess I never submitted it.

Re: Bird Deck by Lux Playing Cards
I'm happy to release the Birds back into the wild with this new rendition of the card back. (Aves should be the name for the deck, which is "Birds" in Latin and Spanish, and is also the proper scientific classification for Birds.) Ok, so to deal with the white space that existed in the corners of the card back, we've further utilized Karina's art to embellish the design. The main area was already amazing with the unique arrangement of feathers, so we not only positioned the main design to the card edges, but we also added more of her original art to create something that will look beautiful when the deck is fanned out. It is made up of feathers and other Bird related designs to keep the deck unique as well as functional. You can see how the fan will also add color in different areas, and it adds a nice flair to the deck as well. We are putting final touches on this project in order to launch it via Kickstarter soon. I appreciate the continued feedback from you all to help make this deck as attractive as possible.
Re: Bird Deck by Lux Playing Cards
I have a friend who is going to absolutely love this Beautiful deck! I especially like the uniqueness of the contrasting genders. The white space on the court cards let's you focus on just the art itself, but I could see how some people would think it was plain. Have you considered some very faint art throughout the background of each cards to spice it up a little? Just enough to cut the white without interfering with the birds.

Re: Bird Deck by Lux Playing Cards
I'm not completely sold on the tiny feathers. Perhaps larger feathers would have made the fan much more attractive. Definitely a huge improvement from the original concept though. Also, I would suggest bringing the indices and pips closer to the corners so when someone is playing they don't have to spread the deck that wide to see them.

Re: Bird Deck by Lux Playing Cards
Thanks guys. I think this is a great improvement too. Yes, the pips will be the right distance to the corners. Bicycle's template allows us to place them properly; I think the view here is just due to the jpg creation, but the pips will be the "typical" distance to the corners so that you can easily see when playing cards. Bringing them in a little tighter will also allow more room to see the Bird designs. The actual art of the Birds themselves is really stunning.

Re: Bird Deck by Lux Playing Cards
I like the back design as it is right now, its so much better than the original concept. While larger feathers may make fans more attractive, it may take away or distract from the main design element in the center of the back design, which should be the focus, and I think the smaller feathers that you have will still make fans look good enough. Completely agree with the placement of the indices and pips needing to be brought closer to the corners to be more functional for card play. Congratulations on the improvements and thank you for listening.Eoghann wrote:I'm not completely sold on the tiny feathers. Perhaps larger feathers would have made the fan much more attractive.
