Probably a lil late to go with a two-way deck. ;) ;) ;)

If only he'd lose the copyright and the title at the bottom of every single card. That'd be a huge improvement. And it desperately needs the bottom corner pip and indice. The man has great talent as an artist, but as a deck designer he's severely lacking.

And that tuck...gee whizz Batman.

I agree. A lot of good potential but needs a few improvements. The tuck case needs 100% overhaul.

Hey all... thanks for this, I'm Nick the creator, I'll at least say hello and keep up where I can. A few things- The Artist wants the copyright/title information on the cards, mandatory. The main focus of these are more of a tribute to Don Maitz's work than anything. Large Artwork, really bring out on the detail. We want each card to stand alone as a piece of art... you have the art title, the artist name, the context (pirate carrds)... Making the artwork smaller to include the bottom pip is just not for this deck, it still works fine. I do appreciate honesty though, and will absolutely consider everything before printing. So the more you say, the better. Haha, and the packaging box... it is colorful. Like pirates. We will see.

Welcome, Nick. I put you into the Deck Artist group.

The reason for including the bottom index & pip is for functionality. Sometimes a deck of cards can be upside down and in this case, since there is no bottom index & pip to help indicate the rank or suit, a player can't easily tell what card is in his/her hand and is forced to turn the card over.

Hehe I play way too much poker, I understand the pip issue :) But for an artistic deck like this, if a card is upside down, I don't mind the thought of having to straighten it out, part of organizing your hand. I will explore this more though, I do appreciate the discussion.

We have jobs... but are still just artists, so with at least $2,000 from kickstarter we will do whatever it takes to create Pirate Carrds. We want to see an interest, and we do need money. Is it even worthwhile? question/vote: is it worth sacrificing the large scale art for bottom pips? Maybe I can post some examples here?

Maybe do a couple cards to compare between one without the bottom pip and one with? I'm looking at the cards, and some of them don't need to be shrunk down to include the bottom pip. You might have to move the copyright to the middle, though...

Would you consider changing the color of the indexes on the hearts and diamonds to red instead of black?

Have you gotten a quote from USPCC yet?

You could move the copyright under the title to make room for the pip? That way you won't have to delete anything. :)

If I were a backer, this statement wouldn't put me at ease. Plenty of others before you have been willing to "do whatever it takes to create <their deck>", and failed. Or at the very least, failed to meet their deadline (set by themselves). Just a word of caution: Without reassurrance of the creator/project manager's financial capabilites I wouldn't back a project regardless of the work put into the art, and I'm pretty sure I'm not alone.

Honestly its great artwork, but such a terrible deck of cards. Why not make an artbook, posters or even sets of postcards ?

It's a little too novelty for my liking. Maybe that's the point? Either way, not for me.

Don and I have utilized Kickstarter a couple times and produced, we know the routine, the numbers... It is a novelty deck, and we have artbooks, greeting cards, card games, and a few other things that uses Don's art as well... We love this deck of cards and are excited for it. I do want to make it the best it can be though, and that is why I will continue reading this forum. I will be playing with some pips all week.

This is your first USPCC deck though, and those are expensive. The $2000 goal indicates that you don't know the numbers for that, and your previous comment indicates you don't have the remaining ~$6000 that you'll need at hand. They are just assumptions, of course, but they are what backers refer to as "red flags".

I think the art is top notch, but I agree that the cards aren't functional. The pips should be symmetrical. Also the artist needs to let go of the fact that he wants his name and copyright on every card. It should be more about the deck as a whole. The $2000.00 goal is severely unrealistic. The average deck cost with the USPCC is close to $8000, kickstarter and amazon get their percentage and then you have shipping costs as well. I wish you the best of luck and hope you succeed, but keep in mind how much you are going to actually need to fulfill this deck.

I hear you, thanks. Yup, as long as we get $2,000 from Kickstarter we at least have what it takes. Thanks all, I really am going to work on the design. Part of the reason I am using kickstarter is to get a bunch of feedback too. It's worked! Especially here.

@Nicace9 - I argee with daveEderly 100%. Unless you have $10,000 sitting in the back cos granny died last month. I suggest you cancel your Kickstarter, but only when you get close to $2000. Those backers are your base for when you relaunch. You have to many mistakes and your goal is low. I fear because because of the art of Don Maitz you will get your goal, but by how much pass $2000 I don't know. Hey, if you got the money I'll shut up.

First of all, this is an art deck not a "traditional" deck. A lot of the rules go out the window, but even with an art deck you have to have indices on top and bottom. The deck has to be functional. No voting just do it. Put the changes on your Kickstarter as soon as possible. YOu would have a bigger fan base if the deck is functional. I can smell it; The artwork is very good.

Second, You need to put "Pirate Carrds" on the AoS. It doesn't have to be on every card; It's your logo. The AoS works really well.

Don Maitz wants his name on every card, why not this is an art deck right? We can do anything we want too. Put his name in the top right like this artiest did.

The top right of the card is some prime real estate. It does't have to be in the white border. Just in the top right somewhere. You also have the option of putting his name on both the AoS or and the Artiest card.... Problem solved. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul-Émile_Bécat His name was Paul Emile Becat.

Let's talk about your tuck box. Is this your back of card with the "text"? If it is, It's "1-way" back and suxs.

Am I suppose to be thinking "Ace in the hole"? Grow some skin. We are honest. I might have an idea for your "2-way" back of card.

I checked out Don Maitz's art. This is a good start for your "2-way" back. You might have to cut the lower image to bring it together to make a mirror image, but it would be the start of a "2-way" back of card.

Just know the top left is the prime real-estate for the back of back if you used this image. It's in the fan of the cards.

Hey Sprouts... nice, usefulness everywhere here.

As for the money, I was really just wondering if it was against a kickstarter policy to have some of my own, lol. I thought I was being interrogated by you guys or something. But I read the kickstarter guidelines again, yes we have the necessary money... as long as we can get the $2,000 in support.

So moving on... I am working on new designs, I'll post it ASAP on kickstarter and here when I have something to show.

Step 1: Concept= Pirate Cards. Cool, it looks like people like the idea at least.
Step 2: Designs= had a basic vision, but open for improvements. And it looks like we have found the critics eyes.

If I just green light printed these, without kickstarter... and without the bottom pips... think about that. Probably would have never heard the end of it. So thanks, I appreciate you all taking the time to at least speak up.

I feel like I have a great opportunity with Mr. Maitz here, and as a game/art fan, I just want this to be cool too... cheers
