Alex started the iconic Seasons series with Primavera and Seronda (Spring & Autumn) and now he's going to finish with Summer & Winter. For me, the Seasons decks were the first ultra high-end custom playing cards in the industry and is still in my top three all-time favorite decks. This is an absolute automatic must buy for me and becomes my most anticipated deck now, ahead of the Turtleback Tallys, Hive, or even Uusi's 6th and final deck.

I'm excited he's "back." Will it be another set though because winter isn't mentioned?

It is "the seasons" so I'm pretty sure he won't leave it at just 3 of the 4. ;)

This set should be on every collectors shelf. I dare say that if you aren't interested in these, your perspective is severely skewed and you probably need professional help.

I'm still new. I had heard of them but was unaware of the name "seasons". I checked out the site and picked up a set.

CB no worries. The first Season series was one of the first deck I bought when I started collecting. Very nice set. Sometimes I assume that everyone has been collecting for years

huh, ok then. I also didn't see the early link about them either somehow. Good thing I think I prefer the silver in this case, although the gold on black would be pretty sweet...

Smh. I didn't know about these cards until now. I'm debating whether to get just the white deck or both as a set. It's plenty of decks that look similar to the black version but the courts on these decks are great and both decks would look great together on the shelf.

I couldn't agree more. I have an open set and a signed set that is among my most prized decks. The collector in me wishes he would do more decks because his work is beautiful... My wallet is glad he doesn't! I am currently saving to get a set of Seronda and Primavera canvas prints.

Agree with all you said, Sinjin. The original Seasons have gotten lost in the current deck wars but they have never been beaten for sheer class. They are timeless.

Alex and I chatted for about 1/2 hours yesterday using Facebook "Messenger" and he is really getting ready to enjoy the heck out of this! He's one of my fellow 52+Joker members, so I hope along with Jackson and Paul Carpenter, Randy Butterfield and several others we will make a BIG difference in the group's complexion overall. It's always been an "old man's club" - just stating fact. This year is the second sincere run at making a new generation of card collectors, and I already know this is going to work! I've got a suite, Tom has a suite, Bill Kalush has a suite (I think - need to cross-check my facts) and we're all going to be hosting things, like every night I'll have poker & blackjack with two different decks every night opened. Just something fun to do and anyone is welcome to bring one of their favorite decks to play one night.

I already got my 500-clay chip set out and cleaned it up, replaced the ''el-cheapo" dice with Jerry's Nuggest dice (not kidding), put a deck of Jackson's and Randy Butterfield's inside the box, and stacked another 5 or 6 decks like Tally Ho Split Spades Blue back & SS Lions Red and a good ol' Bee 'melon, amongst others. We're going to have a blast, I guarantee that!

Another thing that makes the original gold Seasons editions so great is that they were made in Ohio before the infamous move to Kentucky by the USPCC.

*Edit - upon closer examination, the original Seasons were probably made in Kentucky, even though the bottom of the tuck states Cincinnati, Ohio while the side of the tuck states Erlanger, Kentucky. I conclude they are made in Kentucky due to the fact that it has a Magic finish, which I think they started to use once the USPCC moved to Kentucky.

I notice most of the decks say Platinum Series V2. How are both of them different (without me looking them up since ya'll know more about them)? I'm still going with just the white version.

Re: New deck from Seasons Playing cards

It appears the original Seasons were made around the time of the transition by the USPCC from Ohio to Kentucky. The bottom of the original Seasons state they are distributed from Cincinnati, Ohio, but the side of the tuck states Erlanger, Kentucky. The Platinum v.2 Seasons only states Kentucky on the side and bottom of the tuck. I made this correction on my earlier post.

The primary difference between the two versions is the tuck box. The original Seasons has gold foil selectively only on the words Primavera/Seronda Edition, tuck flap, and center design embellishment. The v.2 Platinum has silver foil used far more extensively all over the tuck. I prefer the original tucks because I think the more extensive silver foiling on the Platinum series covered up some of the beautiful detail of the printed and embossed design on the original series tuck.

The smaller differences are that the original edition used gold metallic ink on the Jokers, AoS, and courts while the Platinum edition uses silver metallic ink. The gaff cards are different and the Platinum Primavera has a different double backer. There was a very minor error on the background shading of the original Primavera Jack of Diamonds that was corrected on the Platinum Primavera JoD.

In both the original series and the v.2 Platinum series, the primary difference between the Primavera and Seronda decks (aside from one being white and the other black) is that the black Seronda decks have a slightly different back design that the white Primavera, and the borders on the back of the Seronda deck are thinner.

Re: New deck from Seasons Playing cards

Unread post by sinjin7 »

I play in a weekly poker game (always Texas Hold'em) with a bunch of fellow attorneys. When its my turn to host the weekly game, I always bust out different custom decks from my collection to use for poker night. These guys are NOT card collectors, so most of the time they don't even notice or really comment too much on the decks, they just want to play. They never see any fancy tuck boxes since I only bring the cards to my poker table. Over the course of the years, I've probably used over 40 different custom decks from my collection for my poker game, including rare/limited edition decks.

Last week, I decided to use the Primavera and Seronda decks for poker in commemoration of Alex's upcoming Verana and Inverno decks to complete the Seasons series. As soon as the guys saw the Seasons decks, every one of them wanted to take a closer look right away and commented favorably on the cards throughout the night. Again, none of these guys are collectors. The only other decks to elicit this type of reaction at my poker games in the past were Uusi's Bohemia and Pagan decks. At the end of the night, the guys insisted on playing a final hand of 5 card stud so that the winner could take home the well-used Seasons decks. Fortunately, I still have 2 bricks of the original Seasons and one brick of the Platinum version still left so I was more than happy to comply.

It had been a little while since I handled or played with the Seasons decks, so it struck me anew how elegant these decks are. Even though its been years since these were released, the Seasons decks still compare very favorably to even the best custom decks that have come out in recent months, and that's a testament to how timeless these decks are. I just hope we won't have to wait too long for the Verana and Inverno decks to be released.

Hi guys,

I'm looking forward to collecting a few questions in regards to feedback for the upcoming set and sharing a few behind the scene photos of how the artwork for these cards develop. Hopefully I'll be able to post early next week when I get back.

But in the meantime I figured that you guys wouldn't mind seeing the Inverno (Winter) back design.
