Fully custom decks ae beautiful, it can't be denied they add so much more to a deck but the majority of people buying cards are not collectors, and those people want decks they can open, use and enjoy.

Lawrence and his legends decks have a big fanbase in Asia (and our customers too) and standard courts and pips are what most want when they play a card game or use for magic. There's a huge amount of people that buy a nice deck now and then, and to them- they want something they can recognise.

I do agree that this theme was perfect for custom courts but (and I'll probably be shot for this) there is nothing wrong with standards courts and pips I think from what I can see of the photos it works nicely. Of course the LUXX courts and pips have standard elements but I'm not saying the above because of that, rather the above is also reason why our deck isn't fully custom also.

Same here. When opening a deck is a disappointment, it's not worth having in my collection.

This, this, this. If they sell for $5 shipped I would be in, but meh. So disappointed. All that hype for nothing.

JP may have a point, but that doesn't change how much they missed the mark with the collectors or people that want a unique playable deck.

The majority of people buying cards aren't collectors, but the Egyptian Legends are targeting magicians and collectors, not the mass public (who generally won't pay $8+ per deck). Just because court cards are custom doesn't mean they become unrecognizable and unsuitable for regular card play. I agree that there's nothing wrong with standard courts and pips, but if they aren't going to go full customization, then they shouldn't charge $10+ per deck as if it is fully customized.

Being a collector, I could care less what's on the inside FOR THE RIGHT PRICE. Otherwise, why buy them? No matter how good the tuck looks, I like to compare decks at a price point. And if a previous deck at the same price has all the bells and whistles and the other has no added or differnt features, I'm out.

For the collector who doesn't open their decks, I feel this is still the proper analysis one should use. If this isn't the case, then I should just design shiny pretty tuck boxes filled with scrap paper and sell them for $10-$20 a pop. And for the collector who does open and use their decks, how much more important is it that the deck should be appropriately priced when comparing features and degree of customization to other custom decks.

You make a valid point about it not needing to be unrecognisable, and I agree with you. But traditional still works for a lot of people.

I hadn't realised a price had been released to be honest (unless that's just a guess) but perhaps the print run played a role in the price. I know you're not a fan of LPCC or EPCC decks but they're not as cheap as some seem to think - particularly in small runs. It's the ability to do a smaller run that is really attractive.

Re: Egyptian Legends Deck

Unread post by rousselle »

I have no beef with LPCC doing whatever they want to do with regard to their designs, their prices, how they use their resources, etc. They have a business to run, and I'm sure they are making decisions with that in mind.

As someone who loves playing cards, both to play games with and to appreciate / collect / show off, I share the disappointment that many others here express. My disappointment is not a condemnation of the company or the people behind this deck. It is, rather, just how I feel about this deck because I was expecting an interesting court design. As others have said, it didn't even have to be particularly exotic or novel, but with all the talent and resources this company could have brought to this project, I really did anticipate something a little more... interesting. Clever. Eye-catching.

The backs are nice, I suppose.

Let's contrast my reaction to this one (where I really did expect great things) with my reaction to King's Wild's new Tally-Hos. We were told it would be a "standard deck." We were teased with images. And then, the most recent reveal? They were consistent with what we had been teased. They were consistent with what I, as someone who appreciates good design, have come to expect from JR. The backs are nice. And the courts are... standard, yes, but customized, even so. They are interesting. Clever, in a very subtle way. Eye-catching.

They are not Great Big Attention Grabbers the way some of JR's decks have been, but we were also given fair warning of that. Jackson is offering more than just a new back with old faces. The design clearly, clearly evokes playability. They *scream* playability. (And, yes, I agree with sinjin that they do not scream cardistry. But, since I like to play, this design is okay with me, even given I also appreciate a good cardists' design.) In short, as a person who loves playing cards, I find I love the promise of these oh-so-playable playing cards.

So.

Egyptian Legends.

They look okay.

I may or may not pick 'em up, depending upon price-point and how I feel on a day that I'm shopping for cards. But, yeah, this one could have been awesome. I was really looking forward to wanting this deck. Instead... it's okay, I guess.

Pretty much what I wanted to say. I think I might have said this already in another thread a long time ago but for me the most important part of any deck of playing cards is the back design.

what an absolute waste of such a wonderful looking tuck box, seriously how difficult would it have been to have designed the courts to look like a range of egyptian gods, or pharoahs - standard faces are just so dull sadly.

we have been spoilt for choice.

The exact example that came to mind rousselle.........I think the question ends up being who's "Standards" ;)

Those backs are a disappointment. Should've kept the color scheme from the box IMO.

Well, whilst I agree, I went and got 2 each, and Lawrence told me it should have given me the 6 deck price, but it didn't. If it happens, just respond to your email and you get a quick reply. Actually, Lawrence answered mine...

Re: Egyptian Legends Deck

I just got a email from Conjuring Arts Team -
Introducing the 3 newest members of the Legends family...
Egyptian Legends!
Conjuring Arts has the Exclusive US Supply!

A new design from the Legends Playing Card Co., Egyptian Legends feature an updated design and box that hold true to the high standard set by the previous iterations.
Image
The Egyptian Legends were designed by the supremely talented Mark Stutzman, the artist responsible for many of David Blaine's decks and posters as well as Chris Chelko's Whispering Imps and Conjuring Arts' Ask Alexander deck. The back design is elegant, and the Egyptian motif lends itself to a number of presentational possibilities, as well as incorporating some clever systems that may subtly assist the magician in some of his endeavors. Two of the decks have two color printing (Blue/Silver and Black/Gold) on the backs, and an elegant Red deck rounds out the new trio.

The box features a die cut center piece that showcases a little bit of the back design, gold foil inside and out, and 3D embossing. Used cleverly, the foil and/or the die cut could provide some opportunities for glimpsing cards.

Special 3 pack $26.85 Pstpd/US
6 pack $49.95 Pstpd/US
Brick special $89.95 Pstpd/US (BEST DEAL!)
Individual Decks also available, $8.95/ea. plus postage
I bought a mixed 3 deck pack for $26.85 (21€) incl. international shipping from the Legends Website! Good Deal if you ask me!

Totally agree Magik. Still pondering whether to pick up a set. Really like the tuck face but it starts going downhill from there.

Indeed! Oh well, feel free to email or PM me next time if you want to know whether a deck is likely to be stocked. I might not always have an answer immediately but it's worth asking.

Yep, on Lawrence's site (LegendsPlayingCards.com) it says they are, but gives no details of how. Could well be the same system - same artist.

All things considered, not a bad price for these decks. I just wish (like most here) that the back were different. I further wish there was only 1 color. The color scheme (aside from the backs) isn't that noticeably different. So if they just did one, nice back I'd like that more. But either way, still not a bad deal.

Legends have all been done in threw colors. Even the second (v2) ones had red & blue in limited quantities. I stuck away a brick of each - should be easy to punt in a few years if not sooner. Theae, just not feeling so much. A pair of each.

Well look at that...I have one of the black decks, and I'm seeing the same thing as you - the 9♣ is mismarked as an eight.

I'll check blue and red tomorrow - left the mixed brick at work and only brought home one deck of black cards.
