It's a "Skat" deck (36 "papers" or cards) made in Austria by Piatnik, "Ferdinand Piatnik und Sohns". That specific #1886 I'm not familiar with, so if you could show us a pix or two it would be helpful and we can assist you further.

Does it look like any of these? Photos would certainly help as stated.

It looks like it is still available from the German Piatnik website - http://shop.piatnik.de/index.php?cmd=pi ... id=1007681.

Nothing else to say other than the obvious - German 36 card deck that uses traditional German suit/pips of Hearts, Bells, Leaves, and Acorns), probably focused on games like Skat, Tarock, Schafkopf.

I have a few decks similar to this and a little google-foo is where I got my info from, so that's all I have for you. Maybe others can provide more details. The folks on discourse may have more information as I think more of the historical and world collectors hang out there, but maybe you'll get what you need here.

Yep, originally made long ago, but still made, and available in Britain for 2.5# (GPB) about $4.25 US: http://www.playingcardsales.co.uk/cards ... tref=12809. It's a nice deck, but not rare, and it is a "Skat" or as Nate mentioned used for other games as well, with the German suits.

Thanks for the info. It came in a bag with a couple other basic decks for 90 cents. It looks really cool and is great shape. I was just curious as to what it was as I hadn't seen anything like it before.

The German Skat decks are pretty neat to start with, and they are definitely collectible! I have several, mostly older ones, from Piatnik, Cartimundi and others.

They German courts are really different, and the one thing that really gets me about collecting old Bicycle decks is that they are identical, except for the backs, Ace of Spades and Joker(s).

This is the "Wilhelm Tell" (austro-czech pattern) deck that was first designed and issued by Piatnik in the early 1900s. Reprinted many times. I have the same one except it's 33 cards and called Nr. 1884. I think the 33 card deck can be used to play a version of the game Five Hundred.

Yep, I have mint & opened one of those, William Tell for us 'Merikuns. The courts are exceptional! Very distinctive because of the "ober" / "under".
