Re: Bicycle Classic Monsters Playing Cards (KS)
NO. Godzilla is NOT THE QUEEN OF CLUBS. WTF?!?!?!? He's the friggin King of the Monsters! He should be a King somewhere! At the very least a King GAFF card!!! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh yeah no, that's a direct insult to my username
I get that the Kings are the most iconic monsters (Dracula, Werewolf, Mummy and Frankenstein's Monster), the Queens are like less-humanoid monsters (hence the Creature from the Black Lagoon, King Kong & Godzilla), and Jacks are supposed to be lesser-known monsters like Nosferatu... but why is Frankenstein's Bride a Queen too??? Why couldn't he have kept the theme consistent among the Queens!?
Aaaarghhhhhhh.
Also, I don't think Godzilla is public domain.
And the back design reminds me nothing of classic monsters. It's an eye on a black background. There was a previous classic monsters deck on KS, and that was more reminiscent of the theme.
Why are the Jokers clowns? I don't recall clowns being included in the list of classic monsters... at least, not for me.

Re: Bicycle Classic Monsters Playing Cards (KS)
I would prefer the Bicycle Monster Mayhem deck over these though it seems like it won't be funded for the second time. Having KING Kong, Godzilla and a Merman/Lagoon creature as Queens just ain't right plus there's no color and I don't like the back. Pass.

If they drop those awful backgrounds and possibly add some colour I'd be in. Despite the good artwork it just looks a little bland at the moment.

Changed my mind when I saw the joker. Pennywise is my favorite monster. I'm hoping to get him to change the teeth.

I don't think the Joker is based off of Pennywise from It. Pennywise doesn't have any tribal-looking makeup.

There are PLENTY of humanoid female candidates to choose - no need at all for Godzilla and King Kong to become Queens - they are definitely Ace or King material!

Re: Bicycle Classic Monsters Playing Cards (KS)
You're right, Godzillian, and Toho Studios is fiercely protective of its copyright ... There are hundreds of millions at stake! This actually leads to my question that maybe someone can answer ...Godzillian wrote: Also, I don't think Godzilla is public domain...
How does copyright work with cards? I mean, Classic Monsters is clearly borrowing heavily from Universal Studios monsters (Creature fBL, Bride, Wolfman, Mummy, etc.) Even the tuck design is obviously Karloff from the 1931 Frankenstein! These are all licensed characters!
So how can such a project go forward? Even if it slips under Universal's radar, wouldn't USPC be hesitant to risk violating trademarks? It seems that none of this bothers the KS pledgers very much!! Can anyone help me understand this murky world of card collecting?
Thanks!

Here are some possible ladies for Queens:
(I posted an image in another thread the other day, couldn't do it here, for some reason).

Here's a possibility for a Jack! From the classic, "The Man Who Laughs":

Re: Bicycle Classic Monsters Playing Cards (KS)
I think in most cases copyright works the same way as it always has when it comes to cards, although certain things can have different licenses for different media (e.g. comic book characters). The USPCC is usually quite careful when it comes to these things, not too long ago they refused to print an Alice in Wonderland deck and the creator had to use another printer after the KS had ended (went with Carta Mundi, I think?). In that case the USPCC were playing it very safe, but for something like this I would think a C&D letter could come regardless of which printer is used.Kruser wrote:You're right, Godzillian, and Toho Studios is fiercely protective of its copyright ... Thanks for the knowledgeable reply, MagikFingerz!
I pledged anyway, since I love old monster movies, and these would also make great prizes for my students! I still don't think they'll see the light of day ...

Re: Bicycle Classic Monsters Playing Cards (KS)
Same with this guy. His courts have borders. Which is fine most courts have borders, but his indexes don't line up with his pips. All the indexes need to be in the same zone or area. His goal seems a bit low for USPCC. Does this smell like another Asylum deck?

Re: Bicycle Classic Monsters Playing Cards (KS)
Update #3 from the Killer Clowns campaign says:
So this project creator is the son of Mike Guistolise of collectableplayingcards.com. It's not precisely a guarantee, but I expect that Mike G. knows the business and isn't going to just let his son blunder into blatant copyright violation, nor is he going to put his reputation on the line by letting this become a train-wreck. I have little interest in the subject matter, but I wouldn't be quite so worried about fulfillment on this project.Help support my son's new deck Classic Monsters. This is the first deck that he has created and it will be released under Classics Playing Cards. He has always loved the art of playing cards and with the creation and success of collectableplayingcards.com he has decided to create his own. Classic Monsters is true to it's name and was created in classic black and white. This is a must have for your collection.
