Robert, I have not, but I understand the process. I do speak a little German, unlike Germans who speak great English, and will reply that they speak a little, I really do speak ein bisschen Deutsch. I imagine it is pretty funny.

As for a web page, not sure, but Google's browser-Chrome-will translate a great number of languages. I use it for Amazon.de all the time :)

Oh, there are Several which support translating between many languages.

I was saying that there may be (and should be, if there isn't already) one where you key in the English text, click one button (perhaps "Translate through a blender", and the web page would (perhaps randomly) pick a series of languages to translate your text through before translating the result back into English and displaying that (and, perhaps, the result of each of the "steps" it took to get there.

To make it more universal, it could support your input (and its final output) in languages other than English, so that speakers of other languages could join in the fun.

A couple of oddities I ran across over the past week: a double deck of mint Kem "Cuty Sark" in the real Bakelite cases like most pre-1950 Ken decks are. Bakelite is the first commonly available plastic, is very brittle ("phenolic" plastics all are) which is why a lot of those cases are chipped (or broken) and was discontinued in 1948 when Union Carbide bought the Bakelite company.

Also, a truly curious "Advance" deck made by Adelaide Card Company - one I had never seen before, and if you look at the courts I swear it must be USPCC in disguise or they owned them (or the company ripped off USPCC courts). This deck is 1895-1905'ish because of the "Squeezers" logo on the tuck case, so it's a very old Australian deck! (and "Round Corners" wouldn't be interesting except during that same time-period) That AoS is definitely unique to Advance / Adelaide, since I've never seen one with an emu!

I love it when a tuck says "Round Corners" on it!

It reminds of of when, in the 1960s, LP album covers often had "STEREO" on them, and listings for new TV shows in TV Guide would often say "COLOR".

All three things (Stereophonic recorded music, color TV shows and playing cards with rounded corners) have been the standard for so many years now that they are just assumed by the consumer unless otherwise noted ("MONO", "BLACK & WHITE", "SQIARE CORNERS").

Nice find!

Yep, I agree. I do always pick up those things that just look unusual to my eye, simply because if at this point I haven't ever seen a deck by that company, even if it's a common deck it isn't "over here" and that one obviously isn't common, nor contemporary, it's definitely vintage if not antique (which depends on your definition, but in South Carolina is has to be 100 years old to be 'antique', and I'm 99.9% certain that this deck is)... "Square corners" is definitely outside the norm and has been for quite some time.

What do you think about my assertion that they are/were USPCC owned or at least 'borrowed' courts?

I would say that the courts were, at least, "USPCC-inspired". :D

And I think that round corners came into vogue in the late 1880s, which, if correct, would make your deck "antique" in just about anyone's book.

That's what I thought as well, maybe even 1885 or so.

Anyway - one "Hoegaarden" deck from the Netherlands: it's a six-sided deck - the only one I've ever seen. Next up is a a group of 3 pairs of Hermes decks from the 1950's: (they run from $100 / pair up to around $750 - that last one I couldn't pull the trigger on: 1948 "1st edition" was asking $1250. huh!!!)

Mike, where did you get the Hoegaarden deck? It is one of my favorite Belgian beers, but impossible to find here in southern Germany. But I do get it occasionally, and would love to have a deck to go with my Hoe glasses.

Probably only this last one need explanation. The top two decks are pictorial souvenirs from Croatia and Montenegro. Bottom left is a Kickstarter I found WAY cheaper on eBay and bottom right is a promo deck for a Fatboy Slim album.

They added the white version for the NOTW project since the blue was not to be reprinted. You should get one... most of all because I'm the Mad Hatter and of course you'd love to have a deck which has me pictured... right? ;)

Best kind of wallet to have, one without money to be stolen from.

But those Hermes decks are pretty amazing looking. I'd be tempted to ask how they handle, but I cringe to imagine someone playing with them. I wish they had a poor man's version that didn't cost an arm, but I guess they wouldn't be Hermes otherwise.

I picked it up on eBay, just like most of the things that I find.

----- Hermes Decks -----

Answer to the other question about Hermes decks: I just couldn't go $1250 for the 1st edition (1948) pair, but I have the next three in the set. For some reason I don't like the way the 5th edition looks at all, so I passed on that one. I bought the 2nd version of $150, but see it all the time going in around $400 and have seen over $600. The deck with the "Hermes / Paris" seal in the center is the 1948 decks I grabbed pix of just to lust after. The other 6 decks are all mine, mine, mine. I'm willing to talk, though... Most of them aren't going anywhere, but I will probably punt one of those 3 sets just to recoup some of the funds I put in them. I had a $400 refund from some idiot that posted pictures of signed certificates and referenced Lee Asher with "Jerry's Nugget" decks and sold 4 or 5 of them before he got caught. I should know better - anything that looks to good to be true is just that - as always.
