[ CBJ ] - UC Featured Collector for May/June 2014

Unread post by Mike Ratledge »

First of all, I'd like to thank everyone for really using and enjoying our first featured collector, and welcome our second: our own moderator Jay Rideout (AKA "CBJ")! Jay has a truly remarkable collection, one that started out exclusively "Bikes" like many collectors did, but has extended into the contemporary mind-set that almost all of us have at this point: without putting any words in Jay's mouth - we buy what we like, whether or not it has the Bicycle logo emblazoned upon the tuck case. Even so, his collection is primarily laser-focused on good old United States Playing Card Company's Bicycle brand (and Bee, Tally Ho, etc). Without further fanfare, here's Jay's 1-on-1 Q&A interview session:
Q: When did you start collecting playing cards?

Back in Sept/Oct of 2009 I was making a delivery for Cadbury to a wholesale store in Toronto. The person I had to meet up with was busy, so I roamed around the store for a bit, and came across a section where they had a variety of playing card. I was immediately drawn to 2 decks… the Bicycle Limited Edition #1, and the Bicycle Guardians.
I play poker a couple of times a month and we always played with basic rider backs. I had never seen different Bicycle decks, so I thought I’d pick up the 2 decks and try them out at the next game. A week or so later, a friend hosted a poker game and asked me to bring my poker chips over. I brought the new decks over as well, and we used those for the night - they were a huge hit.
The next day, I thought I’d hop on YouTube to see what other people thought of the decks. I started watching a review of the Guardians deck, and right away I thought there was something wrong… my deck didn’t have a double backer!
I called Bicycle to let them know that I had a defective deck, and they told me that only the T11 version has the double backer.
So, this brought me to T11 where I found even MORE cool decks, and then by researching more… I came across Ellusionist. I kept talking about these playing cards to my wife, and showing her the decks online. She told me to make a list, and she’d try to get me a few for Christmas.
Well, Christmas morning came… and WOW!!
She bought me all 24 decks on my list, AND had a friend of mine make a display box for them. I was blown away! Here are pics I took that day:

Q: How many decks are in your collection?

As of today (Apr 28th, 2014), I have around 720 different decks in my collection + my minis. I also have around 350-400 duplicates.

Q: What types of decks do you collect?

Bicycle… Obviously.

Q: Where do you think the hobby is going and what changes do you see coming soon? (or what changes do you think will happen?)

I see major changes that have started in the playing card industry... lead by designers like Jackson, Paul, Alex, Randy, to name a few. These designers are pushing the limits of design, and forcing card manufacturers to innovate. You can see these changes happening with tuckbox design, embossing techniques, die cuts, foiling etc. And, with new card manufacturers as an option, things are only going to get better! Competition is ALWAYS a good thing for the consumer, it forces companies to bring their A-game.

As for changes I’d like to see…
I guess the main one is for the prices to drop back down to manageable levels for heavy collectors. I know that with extra bells and whistles, comes extra fees that designers have to pass along to the buyers. It’s just getting very expensive when designers are releasing decks at a starting price of $14-$20 per deck.

Q: What is the oldest deck in your collection?
I really don’t have many vintage decks at all. I think the oldest deck I have is a Bicycle bridge deck, and an old rider back (not sure of the dates)

http://i975.photobucket.com/albums/ae240/1rideout/IMG_0160_zps32886774.jpg

Q: What is your favorite deck in your collection and why?

I have many favourite decks in my collection… to narrow it down to one single one is tough. I’m a HUGE fan of the Jackson’s Federal 52, and Alex Chin’s Seasons decks.
But, if I had to pick one, I’d say the Bicycle Shadow Masters from Ellusionist.... made even better with blacked out edges...

http://i975.photobucket.com/albums/ae240/1rideout/Playing%20Cards/IMG_0098.jpg

Q: What deck that you do not have would you most like to have?

I’d love to have sealed vintage Bicycle decks, but they go for crazy prices.
As for modern Bicycle decks, there is one deck that I can’t track down.
And yes, it’s real.

The Bicycle New Era (gold Edition)

Q: Why the nickname CBJ?

Well, it has nothing to do with hockey or the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Let me start by saying that I’ve worked in the chocolate industry for over 20 years…

In my early 20s, I started hanging out with a new group of friends. In our group there were 3 Jasons, so if I came up in conversation when I wasn’t around…
someone would ask “which Jason?”, and the response would be.. “ the chocolate bar guy”. This quickly changed into Chocolate Bar Jay, and then became CBJ.
Most of my friends call me CB or CBJ. Even their kids call me CBJ
Like any collection I've never really seen close-ups of, I can only lust after certain decks that I've never even seen before - perhaps heard tails of.

...and now - fire away! Jay is happy to answer your questions and I can assure you what you see now is just getting us warmed up. --M

Thanks Mike for the lead in!

Hello all, my name is Jason.. and I'm an addict.

So, a few basic stats:

Name: Jason Rideout
Age: 41
Location: Oshawa, Ontario, Canada

I’m married to an amazing woman, who is very supportive of my hobby… most times.

So today is day 1 of my 2 months with you guys, so let’s get to it!
First, if you’ve ever wanted to ask me any questions about my collection, the hobby, or anything at all… now is the time.

Second, I have over 700 different decks in my collection. I’ll try to spread it out over the full 60 days, so don’t expect it all in the first week or so. But if there’s something you just don’t want to wait for, speak up!

and third… near the end of the 2 months I’ll be giving away some decks/products. I haven’t worked out the how yet, but you need to keep watching this thread to find out all the details.

So, where to start… where to start…

There are a few decks that I get asked about all the time, so I guess I’ll start with one of those sets.

The Bicycle Split Spades prototype deck set from David Blaine. ( CLICK PICS FOR LARGER VIEWS )

The above packaging boxes are different than the ones that were eventually released for retail...

And of course they changed the decks a bit ( I prefer the prototypes )...

The prototypes are from mid 2010, with the retail decks hitting the market late 2010.

How did I get them?

On the old UC.net someone had posted a pic, and I tracked down the guy that owned them. He wouldn't sell.
I called USPC, and chatted with someone there about the situation and they put me in contact with someone who they knew had 3-4 sets.
I contacted that guy (I forget his name), and he told me that a couple of different people had messaged him about the decks and that he would put up one set on Ebay.

I wasn't too happy about bidding against other collectors, but a few days later they popped up on Ebay.

I obviously ended up winning the auction for around $70 (at the time, the biggest one time card purchase for me).

A couple of years later, the blue and the black decks were included in the V1 of the blaine collector box

Well, I'll end my first post there, and I look forward to the questions and comments about my collection!!

As a fan of David Blaine, I am envious of your proto type set! They do look better than the released versions. What do you mean by blacked out edges on the Shadow Masters? Looking forward to seeing your collection. Thanks for your time.

Excellent start, Jay! This is going to be a whole lot of fun! I'm always amazed by some of the decks - especially those prototype decks which I LOVE to grab, and they are just so hard to find...

Hey Eoghann!

Rarity is a hard thing to narrow down. 1000 runs of decks are more and more common now.
I really don't know the press run of the blaine prototypes, so it's hard to gauge where they fall on the rarity scale.

If we're talking rarity by the numbers... I would say the Gold Monarch is the rarest deck I own.
Only 144 were printed, and only 111 were sold. You can read more about them here:
http://thecardcollectors.blogspot.ca/2012/06/gold-monarch-vs-normal-monarch-theory11.html

If we're talking rarity because of how it was distributed and how hard it is to find... I would have to say the Bicycle Grand Opening deck.
These were handed out at the ceremony celebrating the grand opening of the new USPC plant on August 20th, 2009.

http://i975.photobucket.com/albums/ae240/1rideout/Bicycle-GrandOpening_zpsb2fa7606.jpg

I also have a few more prototype decks that I'll be showing in the weeks to come.

shadowkat wrote:What do you mean by blacked out edges on the Shadow Masters?

Hey Shadowkat!

By "blacked out edges", I mean that I took a Sharpie and "sharpied" all the edges of the cards... one card at a time.

The thread on Aether has a lot of back and forth on this subject
http://www.playingcardforum.com/playing ... our-decks/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I've also done a couple of other color decks as well with this method. The Bicycle Reverse Back (Red), and the Bicycle Reverse Back (Green) by Magic Makers.
The red turned out amazing!!! but the green was a disaster (the green one can be seen on page 6 of the Aether thread)

If you're going to attempt this, I HIGHLY recommend one card at a time.

I hope that answers your questions :)

Say, what is it with us Featured Folks and "New Era" decks?

First, I mention an early American deck of that name as my "most desired deck".

Then Jackson mentions a "New Era" deck (I'm not sure which one) as HIS "most desired deck".

Now, CBJ mentions the fairly-recent Bicycle "New Era" deck as HIS "most desired deck"!

I'm starting to sense a pattern... :D

Thanks for the reply! Looking forward to see what other rarities you have!

I have to admit I had heard about running a sharpie on the edges but I had never seen the process. Those look fantastic! Think I'll start doing that on some of mine. :)

Completely different decks, Jay is talking about the Gold/Limited version of the 59-fifty deck, Jackson is talking about an antique deck called "New Era" that is more than 100 years old.

So Jackson and I are both talking about the same deck then. I thought so, but wasn't sure.

And yes, I knew that Jay's "New Era" deck was a modern Bike (as I said in my post).

I was just noting the unusual coincidence that all three of us wanted decks with "New Era" in their name is all.

Sorry if I wasn't clear on that.

Hello CBJ;
Sorry to come to the party late. I just got in from work. My question is about displays. Are all of your decks displayed? If so, how? I saw the picture of your first display but I doubt you managed to stick 720 decks in there... :D

Haha to my knowledge Jay is still having his displays sorted out, and those are scans stitched together.

Those displays are going to be epic, Jay can start a museum soon.

Hello all,

Sorry for the lack of posting, I was a bit busy the last couple of days.
I'll be posting more frequently starting Monday!

Hey nECr0MaNCeD,

As of this moment, I have none of my decks displayed... not even in that wooden display box I showed earlier.
I had a friend help me build a few displays a while back, but then they just sat there unfinished for the last 6 months.
The displays can display 12 decks per shelf if they are facing out, or 50 decks per shelf if they are sideways.

Hey CBJ;
Thanks for the reply and pics. The displays look great. I am looking for someone local to help design some displays for my collection. I'd do it myself but I failed wood shop...

I just did some quick weight calculations on how much the decks would weigh on these displays.

This is only the weight of the cards.. not the actual display...

If I face all the decks out (12 decks per shelf X 7 rows = 84 decks), the decks will weigh roughly 17-18 lbs.

If I put all the decks sideways (50 decks per shelf X 7 rows = 350 decks). the decks will weigh over 70 lbs... SEVENTY POUNDS!

PLUS the weight of the display!

I'm going to have to really reinforce these things.

May the 4th be with you...

If so, that would mean that a brick weighs 2.4 lbs, and that one of my ~80-deck BCW boxes weighs ~16 lbs, fully loaded, and that my entire (~2,400-deck) collection weighs ~480 lbs?!

Holy moley!

Sounds about right. I think I measured a deck (standard bikes) to be roundabout 100 grams.

The timber will take the wwight - it's the wall fixings that'll be the weak point. 4-5" coach bolts / fischers through the displays into timber or brick will pretty much hold whatever you want!

They look amazing though Jay!

Right on the money: typically 95-98 grams per deck, with the Bee decks weighing in on the top side, some recent Bicycle (what used to be called "Aristocrat" stock) weigh in around 90-92 grams, but most are 95. I guess that fine line depends a lot on what kind of tuck box it's in.

Good thing you don't have a lot of plastic decks. They weigh about 140 - 150 grams each.

I remember when you first showed those sharpie pics. It inspired me to sharpie my Tattoo deck - which turns out to look great with the black edges.

Well chocolate bar guy, I have a sealed vintage Bee deck that was issued by the International Playing Card Company (USPCC Canadian division). It doesn't fit in my own collection and I tried selling it and haven't had any takers. You can have it for the shipping cost but I'm afraid the shipping cost may be prohibitive. I am wanting to unload some of the Bicycle decks I bought early on so maybe we could come up with something that makes the shipping worthwhile. Let me know if you're interested.

Hello all,

So, due to the way I store my decks, some decks might be shown not in their proper sets (example you might see 2 of the Asura, but the other 3rd one might show up in another post).
I have around 1200 decks total.. to find them all would be a chore right now.

If you have any questions about any of these decks, please don't hesitate to ask.
The basic decks that you can buy in almost any playing card store I won't go into detail about.

The 1st edition and 2nd edition David Blaine Collector sets:

the 1st edition...

And the 2nd edition...

The 2nd edition is one of the purchases I regret making.

If you didn't see in other posts I've made on forums, I currently store my decks in scrapbook boxes.
They hold exactly 50 decks, and they have a spot to number them in the front.

Here is box #1 - - - -

Another set that I get asked all the time about is the Bicycle 125th Anniversary test set.

http://i975.photobucket.com/albums/ae240/1rideout/IMG_0260_zps398461d7.jpg

My set is not sealed, and has a little bit of dirt on it, but they are extremely hard to find.

How did I get them?

I had friend who had a contact at USPC. They put me in touch with them, and told me about some of the decks that they had been given over time.
They agreed to sell me some of their stuff, so the wife and I planned a road trip down to Erlanger. I met up with them, and went through their stash. (about 3 totes worth)

I walked away with a few gems! You'll see the rest in later posts.

This is another test set that I picked up in a trade. The cupid-test-decks.
They don't look like much, but these are not full production decks.

There are other decks like this as well. Here are a few more -

THESE ARE NOT PART OF MY COLLECTION... If you have these decks, please message me...

I remember a while back you said something along the lines of: "you'd be shocked to hear about the decks I've let slide because they weren't Bicycle" (paraphrasing).

I'm curious about the driving force behind the staunch preference towards the brand. I know you don't have ONLY Bicycles, but it would seem the percentage is well above 90%. What is it about the brand that drives you to collect it?

Thanks!
