Hey Norbie,
You can trust us :)
This is new account for the Aquila project, but if you saw the crew, you'll see Ivan and Tony has been backed some KS project. Also we had Mike Ratledge on board.
My account only backed the Aquila to answering question as a designer. I don't backed KS project because shipping cost to my country is very expensive. However I bought some of them when released in open market.
I hope it would be clear :)
rousselle wrote:At the bottom of the Ace of Spades, it says in Cyrillic, "Tnye Tchtn."

The more I look at these cards, the more I like the designs of the courts and the number cards, and the more the freakin' abuse of Cyrillic is driving me crazy. I swear, even though I could figure out that the first word in that pair was supposed to be "The", it took me *minutes* to figure out what they were going for with the second word, and English is my first language, not my second. Jeez. A "Ch" is not a "Y". There's no way to see a "Ch" as a "Y" if you already know that a "Ch" is a "Ch".

I'm pledging for a few because I like the aesthetics of the courts and the number cards so much. Like, really, a whole lot. But the Russian letters to try to spell English words just gets dumber and dumberer.

-------

Norbie: you raise a point that has occurred to me, as well, but if Ivan backs it, that carries quite a bit of weight. Ivan is rock solid. And, for that matter, I think Mike R is also part of the "crew," and I doubt he'd lend his valuable repuation to a fly-by-night prospect. Seeing the kind of endorsement Mike and Ivan are giving this project, I'm thinking this project is a good bet.

Your mileage may vary, of course.
Hi Rouselle, I apologize if it's very confusing with the Cycrilic letter
1 joker says "The Myth" and the other is "7HEARTS"
Here is the picture of the jokers
joker.jpg
Once again, sorry if it confusing. And thanks for your support. Really appreciate it 8-)

No honestly why not get rid of the cryllic letters and use a different font in a similar style ? Wouldnt that simplify matters?

Im in for 2 of everything. Im also waiting to see how LPCCs decks feel. Very nice looking cards and i like that the LEs aren't just a different tuck with a higher price.

Thanks, I'm just a stragler: Ivan & Tony of Kardify and Ade Suryana and his two buddies in "Three of Clubs" are the real movers on this one. It's looking quite good, and the one pledge that was off for international shipping has been fixed ($64 level).

RE: Trust

That was a complete and utter FAIL on me. I was trying to be intellectually funny and it bombed. And now I have to explain it....

Going through the forums many people have mentioned that one way to spot a doggy project on Kickstarter is by seeing that the creators haven't backed any other Kickstarter's along with it being their first project.

Now when you look at the caliber of people involved with Aquila as well as the caliber of people who have endorsed the Kickstarter it's pretty clear it a legit project.

So... You see what I did was......... well..... You get it now don't ya.

I think I'll go and hide under that rock over there...

In Update #4, the project team asks backers to consider the merits of a potential redesign of the court cards for the "Standard" deck.

The question is whether to stay with the current design (as shown in Ivan's post above), or go to a variation that is closer to the Limited Edition design -- the new version being colored differently from the LE but retaining its ornate lines, as opposed to the simplified version seen on the current Standard edition.

I like the revised ones. I hope it doesn't become a third version. I'm a little burnt out over projects with too many different decks in it. I know three isn't a lot compared to other projects, but I think two different decks is good enough.

Aren't we all? Let's think about "Viking" decks from Scott King: first there were two, then there were four, and now there are five tucks, but ONLY two actual decks.

One thing for certain - we (and I use the term loosely, because I'm riding with the crew and in an advisory capacity on this one) but 'they' listen - look at the comments Ade (and Ivan) have already made here...

I had that in mind when writing up that post :P However, I haven't pledged for it, so maybe it wouldn't be fair to say I'm "worn out." I must admit I like getting at least one of every deck available in a series, and being part of that project would have drove me nuts. I know I don't have to get them all - I've read that argument many times, and I'm very conscious of that. I guess you could call me somewhat of a "completist." But see, I don't have to have every deck. I still pick and choose which playing card projects I back. I only get ones I like, and if it's a design I really like, I'd hate for there to be so many different versions because I'd really want to have them all! And I think every time a designer creates just a little bit of change (like a tuck swap) and makes it another deck, that designer is taking advantage of those portion of collectors (I'm one of them), who would like a complete set.

However, looking at the past playing card projects I've backed, I've realized that although several of them have more than one deck available (and a number that have more than two per campaign), the additional decks also had different backs and not completely tuck swaps. Ex. of these would be:

Dia de Los Muertos: Three recolored decks (with different backs), and a fourth LE that's a "tuck swap" (painted deck inside)
Ornates: Five different color variations (with different backs)
Independence: Two different decks with differences in court cards and backs
Grotesque: Different backs
Origins: Different backs

So I guess if this revision of the Aquila standard courts does become a third deck, at least it's not simply a tuck swap! (No, but really I'm okay with two :P)

Also, I'm copying and pasting my comment from the update section of Aquila:

"I thought the originals were too plain, too stripped down: it didn’t seem like a different design as much as it was the limited edition courts with all the details deleted. Now I think the revised courts look too similar to the limited edition. It’s effectively a recolor.
Rather than choose between “no details” and “recolored limited edition details,” I’d like to see “simplified details”:"

I agree with W. I though the first version of the standard courts were too stripped down and it just seems like a lot of the details were deleted to make then standard. I don't mind them looking like the limited edition (albeit recolored), but W's idea of simplifying them makes sense, too! And it would be a good compromise between those people who like more details and those that feel that the new design makes the limited edition less special.

Pretty much what Coastal Pete said: "The standard deck's court cards are too plain for royalty. Add more detail but make them different. Sort of minor royalty!"

We have no plans for a third deck at the moment... we are focused on the SE and LE decks. :)

With our latest update, our intention was to make the courts a little less 'plain' hence the revised version.

I agree with the comments about the proposed SE courts looks a smiler to the LE courts. Ade is looking to make few changes based on the comments. :)

Will keep our backers posted. ;)

I like the way the new version of the courts addresses the concerns of being too simple while, at the same time, not being quite as ornate as the LE. Well done.

And I'm not being facetious when I say: now, can you look at using a slightly different font for the text you have on the AoS and Jokers and box?

It really is distracting. Anyone who reads a Cyrillic-based language will forever read the name of your deck as DQISHCHD. I can't unsee that. (In my head, I pronounce this by doing the Russian thing of just plowing through it even without vowels, and read it as "d'quish'ch'd." It really rolls off the tongue. An alternate pronunciation would be, "Chicken Noodle Soup.")

I'm certain you can come up with a stylized version of English letters that evoke the exact same imposing feeling without actually being Cyrillic instead.

Everything else is so well done. I want to love this deck, because there's so much here to love. The courts! The pips! The backgrounds! For me, the font abuse is the only thing in this deck that says, "not designed by a professional."

Any chance that's something you could do? In my opinion, that would knock this out of the park.

(And yes, I acknowledge that it's picky, but it's not a trivial picky, I don't think.)

Thanks so much for the first part: Ade worked very hard and very fast to make that compromise.

I guess we just have to disagree on the 2nd part. If it looks Cyrillic it's all in the mind, it's simply artistic license and makes it look different. I'm good!

I like it!
Question (I'm new, sorry)... Is that kind of diptych jokers, with art going on the edges of the card (and no other cards of the deck with ink on the edges) makes it possible to identify the jockers from the deck or in the hand of a player?

Re: Aquila Playing Cards - Live! on Kickstarter

I don't think you'll be able to tell if the card is a joker if its in the hands of a player unless he's really bending the cards and you have the right sight angle. But you will definitely be able to tell if its in the deck or not by slightly shifting the stack of cards of a deck diagonally to one side or the other and reading the edges.
