I wish they would go with a more simple back design, large flow-y colourful pucci-inspired back design similar to whatever little clothes the courts have on. With courts like these, i think having a similarly styled back design would be better

Hey Volantangel - sorry to hear you don't like the new backs! We actually went through several variations with one being the concept you just mentioned above. That one in particular didn't work for a couple of reasons, one being that it competed to much with the look and pattern of the court cards and when scaled down got super busy, not in a good way. The line work for the new backs were hand drawn by me with the same flair and line weight variations as the line work for the courts. We used the same colors as are in the courts as a direct tie in. We feel the new card back pattern is actually extremely Puuci - many of his textile patterns were influenced by the beautiful old tapestries of Florence Italy and transformed by him into a modern context by adding hot colors - almost all of his designs were very organic in their composition. The new back design is also a fun reference to racy lingerie, an obvious reference to the decks theme. We initially liked the first back design but found it pretty conservative and really didn't embody the racy, burlesque theme of the deck.

I thought I'd post an image of a Hotcakes court and back, and a Bohemia court and back - this shows the same design approach, the backs do not pull directly from the court card artwork but instead are an expression of the theme of the deck.

I like the new back design. For me, it works like they say it does and I can see the point they're making. I'm not digging the black (dark) back though. Really bad color combination. Maybe there shouldn't be a second deck this time around?

Personally I love it. Such a mind melting psychedelic fusion of a variety of artistic styles all rolled into one deck. Another home run Y'all. I especially like the darker back version.

I like the back - but I do agree that the hatching doesn't really work for me - personally I'd prefer a solid colour.

I think I agree, but as usual I can't be sure until I see the alternative.

@montecarlojoe - Think sexy, French, fishnet lingerie. If it was a solid color it would read more like UN-breathable, girdle-like Spanx. The point is to see a little skin ;)

To be a bit pedantic (and I do enjoy that), removing the fishnets without changing the color would show more skin

@magikfingerz – but how would the lace stay together if it weren't sewn to the fishnet? It would just fall off and then...yes...there would be a whole lot more skin showing!

I like the new backs, but I liked the previous backs as well.

I specially like the darker one. The one thing I'm not too crazy about on the light deck is the teal outline around the hot pink elements. I would think a darker color on the lines would make it really pop!

Everybody has an opinion. Personally, I like the new backs myself. Then again, I liked them the way they were as well, so I'm not going to "put a dog in this fight". Works for me, either way - and that way will start here in 10 days less about 10 hours at the time of this writing. Already penciled in on my Pagan calendar: 10AM EDT next Saturday! See you there, everybody...

Uusi, are you definitely sticking to this back design ? I think people are pretty split, especially on that darker back. Would you put up some alternatives and hear what the crowd has to say ?

If all the courts are like the QoS, then Uusi will definitely need a brown paper wrapper

While, to me, the backs seem a little "loud" anything that distracts other players from my horrible poker skills, it's a win in my book. I see at least a mixed brick in my future.

Well, I'm not sure whether or not it would be kosher for me to post non-Uusi links and/or images in what is a Uusi topic/thread (or should that be "an Uusi topic/thread"?), so I will create a new topic/thread titled "Madman & Bone Comics decks" with the pertinent info in the New/Custom Decks forum in a few minutes.

ETA:

Well, I could swear that I created that thread in the New/Custom Decks forum, but it ap[ears to have been moved into my "Featured Collector" topic by a mod or admin, here:

FWIW, I was lukewarm on this project (Hotcakes, I'm talking about, not Madperson and Bone), but the more I see, the more I like. I actually find that the newest version of the backs works really well with the overall feeling of the deck. I've gone from "well, I'll probably get one of each color just to have a whole set," to "this is a must add." I'll likely opt for a half brick, at this point.

That said, for those of you who keep protesting about the bright colors, I'll remind you that the colors they've selected pop more on your computer screen than they will on the printed card. I think these are going to look just fine on the printed card.

Just my two cents. Your mileage may vary. Void where probated by law. Use only as directed. See store for details.

Sometimes I think we really need a "like" button on here.

But seriously, a lot of people apparently don't realize they sell on their website. Original blue bloods are long gone, but everything else can be had cheaper than ANY of the resellers...I've seen BB Redux going for twice the price on their website. I had to forage on ebay to find and original Blue Blood, but Bohemia and Royal Optik I got straight from them. Along with a postcard of thanks.

I think that I stumbled upon Blue Blood on the site of the former owner of UC a looong time ago, but I only recently purchased Royal Optik and Bohemia, both directly from Uusi's site. I pledged on the Pagan KS campaign, so that's how I'll get THAT (anxiously checks mailbox).

I'll most likely get BB Redux from their site once I have the fundage, as well as pledging on the Hotcakes KS project to get THAT (if it's not too late).

But I would imagine that they both will eventually be available on Uusi's site as well, hopefully on that same page I linked to above.

Yes, I checked the site earlier to see if they still had Bohemia available, and yes everything is available for order or pre-order. Surprise to me that they are gilding both versions of Pagan. I snagged one during the campaign, not sure I can afford $125 for the other one...

hey Rousselle,

Nothing like warming up to a little Hotcakes...heh. I could have fun with "the more I see, the more i like" but I'll leave it there - seriously though you touched on something that both linnea and I were thinking in regards to this discussion on the backs/color. These colors kind of go bonkers when they are on a back-lit computer screen. We have printed mock ups at the studio here and they look great, still hot and intense in color but not nearly as eye-gouging as as a jpg. of the file artwork. Here's a shot of the mock ups we took at the studio:

Ah now im liking it more than before, honestly it was making my brain hurt in the computer render lol. Uusi are you looking to do gilded edges for these ?

on a slightly separate note, could you post pictures of the gilded pagan decks once they are done ? I would love to see the results !

Good to hear!

Well, not gilded on Hotcakes but what you're seeing there on the lighter back deck is a hot colored edge that we will be offering in a limited quantity on the KS project.

Yes - we will for sure post pics of the Pagan gilded decks once the first ones are done. Also hoping we can post a short video of the gilding process as it happens here at the studio.

A video would be awesome ! I love to see processes like this.

What exactly would be a hot coloured edge ? Printing on the edge ?
