Oh, I don't think I am worried about the original box. The tin and decks are in perfect condition. The box - not so much. I am thinking neither one of us will really win that contest...

I posted these in my collection thread but thought I would share them here as well. If the double post is bad form or against a rule I missed, please accept my apology and delete this. I just thought it fit this thread.

PS The card roses were nice Shermaine. You're lucky someone spent the time to express themselves in such a unique way.

LOL... Sorry... It's two decks. One Gold Monarchs and one Brown Wynns. Lyle at Theory11 sent then gratis to make up for an error in communication about my order.

Those two aren't the same deck. Brown Wynns on the left, Monarchs on the right ;)

He made them using a tutorial from Theory11, which was submitted by Lalita/phantom1412. Haven't seen them made of tendrils or blue bloods yet, but here's one Randy posted, made of Ornates. Lalita/Phantom1412 made this:

... And one Lee Asher posted, made of Jerry's (also made by Lalita/phantom1412):

And thanks for the kind comments, everyone. Sorry if it upsets you, RSLancastr! I think they're a cool way to use extra cards.

I couldn't bear to do it with a $3 deck of standard Bikes!

Just squeamish, I guess.

I've posted on UC a couple of times about the article I wrote about Collecting Playing Cards, which was published in an issue of M.U.M. Magazine, the magazine of SAM (The Society of American Magicians).

The entire issue was devoted to non-magic uses of playing cards, and there was one article which gave instructions on how to put an entire deck of cards, in its tuck, into a smallish whiskey bottle, resulting in a cool-looking, impossible-seeming object.

I thought it would be cool to try, but couldn't bear to do it, as it required something like this

(NOTE: This is from memory, and only from one read-through of the article, more than ten years ago (I never actually followed its instructions)):
  • Buying a small bottle of whiskey,
  • Emptying it out,
  • Buy a deck of cards,
  • Rinsing the bottle,
  • Letting it dry

So far, so good (I don't drink, but could empty it out down the sink).

Then come the parts with which I would have a problem:
  • Remove the cards from the tuck,
  • Unfold the tuck until flat,
  • Roll it up into a cylinder narrow enough to fit through the neck of the bottle,
  • Insert it into the bottle

Then, using two narrow sticks, reach down into the bottle with them and
  • Refold the tuck, leaving the top open. (there were several steps to this).

Then, one card at a time (and here's the part that would drive me up a wall):
  • Roll the card into a narrow cylinder
  • Using the two sticks again, insert it through the neck of the bottle and into the still-open tuck
  • Unroll the card flat inside the box.
  • tap it down fully into the box

If you want to close the tuck (it might look more impressive left open),
  • Using the sticks, carefully close the tuck's side tabs,
  • tuck the end flap in and push it into place.
There was (obviously) a lot more detail in the article. I have a copy of the issue here on my desk somewhere, and will re-read that article when I find the issue.

Robert! I thought you flatlined after the Jerry Rose!

And yeah, that's pretty much how the anything is possible bottles are made. I remember seeing a video of it on Instructables

Naaah... Since I do no fans, flourishes or even shuffles, Jerrys are as "meh" to me as any other casino deck with standard courts.
And yeah, that's pretty much how the anything is possible bottles are made. I remember seeing a video of it on Instructables
Reading it after I typed it in, I seem to have left out some important points, like how to fold the tuck back together...
Sher143 wrote:Yeah, I remember reading something like that before. Someone posted a link but I can't remember who or on which thread....
Hmmm... I hope that they did a more complete job than I did.

Now I wish that I had tried it back then (2001 or so).

Nowadays, with the use of only one hand, it would probably be well-nigh impossible for me. :(

Forget ruining the deck. Trying something that tedious would drive me nuts. I think I'd rather get a Brazilian wax.....

Also, wouldn't it be easier to heat the neck of the bottle until it was pliable, widen the neck, insert the deck, reheat and reform the neck?

Unless you're a glassblower, I doubt you can do that with a whiskey bottle. And plastic just lacks elegance. ;)

And stretching a plastic bottle neck so a deck slides clean through and then reconstructing it like nothing happened is one step above wizardry and black magic I presume. If you posess those powers please share, I swear my shirt size is still a Large but they don't agree with me.

I believe that LeeAsher had the woman that posted the video to Theory 11 on how to fold them make him one out of Nuggets. Talk about an expensive rose. When I start lighting cigarettes with hundred dollar bills I'll make a dozen black roses out of some black reser fed 52's

On topic though, it's been rather dry for me lately, waiting on stuff to come in from kickstarter namely but haven't really picked anything new up from stores. May be time to do some selling so I can raise funds and start picking up some more vintage stuff.

I think I've seen some other glass bottles in HK that might work. Actually, Arizona ice tea bottles should work.
