Single deck card box I made today. Red and black. Kinda goes with my red arcane deck. The internal padding is green...because it's all I had at the time. My camera seems to have had an issue with the texture of the green stuff though.

It's so plain though. Makes me wish I had access to a bindery again with a ludow and foil press. As well as all the other gold tooling equipment.

Is that a paper like box like the old slip cases cards used to come in? How does one make something like that?

It's made from 2mm and 3mm boxboard, colored paper, tape, and glue.

I cut all the parts from the boxboard sheets, tape them together, add colored paper where required. Using the skills and leftovers I have from my bookbinding days.



All done with a knife, steel ruler, and bone folder.

Can vary a lot in regards to time. That one probably took me about 6 hours. Mostly because I was watching tv at the time, so there was a lot of distraction. The cutting takes the most time, the actual assembly and adding the colors takes maybe 20% of the time. Thought about getting some boxboard laser cut and see how that works out. But then its not 100% handmade. Without distraction, it would probably only take about 2 hours. But like many things, glue drying time is a pain.

Materials cost is very little. Probably less than $5 for that one.

1.5 sheets of colored paper which is 50c each. Since its not cheap shitty stuff. Though any paper or cover could be used. Like those Japanese papers that you see around, though those can be around $2.5 per sheet. I have a bunch of buckram and other types of bookcloth here. Pretty much if you can cover a book with it, you can make a box with it. The suede papers are pretty nice.

The boxboard didn't cost me anything, since I used to pilfer the scraps from the bindery. So I have a large pile of random sized pieces of boxboard. Though having to buy it, its pretty cheap, around $6 for a massive sheet. Which would easily make a few boxes.

The green stuff, while it doesn't have to be added, is about $4 a sheet, and a single card area would use about 1/3 of a sheet.

The cost of the glue is negligible. Was a new bottle when I started that box, and it still looks full.

Boxboard does go through knife blades quite fast, maybe 2-3 sections. Works out to be around 0.20 per section.
