I picked it up on eBay. It's from the 2003 SDCC for the Sci Fi Channel's Battlestar Galactica series.Eoghann wrote:Interesting BSG deck PT, with the translucent tuck. Any info on the deck? Custom?
The cards themselves are translucent, but the suits and card numbers cannot be seen from the other side. More pics:

The closest thing I've seen is the Bicycle and Hoyle waterproof cards. But these are something else with the frosted finish. Really cool.Widdee wrote:That's a cool idea PT, surprised it hasn't been used more.

We all gotta start somewhere, Patrick. Most of us started out innocently buying one deck, never dreaming of the obsession to which that would lead...patrickrobles wrote:So many awesome decks! And here I am with nothing but a few standard Bicycle decks, time to catch up...

Although we have lived in Salem for three years now (after moving here from Southern California), I don't drive and so, I only have a vague idea of where Corvalis is, sorry! Yes, it is "just down the I5", but so is Los Angeles!
Enjoy the deck,

Re: The "Hey, look what I added to my collection!" thread
I'm assuming this is a reference to the Stephen King book/film 'Salem's Lot.lolo wrote:From France, when we think about Salem, we have 360° turning heads in mind. Is it a local speciality ????RSLancastr wrote: Although we have lived in Salem...
"Salem" is an abbreviation of "Jerusalem" (which is why Stephen King used the leading apostrophe in 'Salem's Lot). It is also an Anglicized version of the Hebrew/Yiddish word "Shalom", meaning "Peace".
When Salem, Oregon was founded, two wealthy men debated what the new city would be called. One wanted to name it Salem (after Salem, Massacussets). The other wanted to name it something else (I forget what).
Unable to decide, they flipped a coin to make the decision, and "Salem" won.
That very coin is on display in a museum here in Salem!

Maybe, but 'Salem's Lot was a vampire story (kinda) rather than Exorcist style. There were also the Salem witch trials which are prominent in the cultural conscience - which were very much about (false accusations of) possession and frolicking with beelzebub!

I think that many, if not most people think of "witch burnings" when they think of the Salem Witch trials, when no such thing occurred. As I understand it, the only person who was killed as a result of the panic back then was a MAN, and he was not burned, he was crushed to death between two huge stones.
And he wasn't even accused of being a witch! He was killed because he refused to admit that his WIFE was a witch (insert wife joke here).
Witch reminds me: Have I ever mentioned here that my ex-wife is a witch? Literally! She became a Wiccan (a "white witch") a couple of years before she filed for divorce. She had a "witch's broom" hanging in our kitchen, and had a cauldron - used in casting spells - out in our garage. Seriously! It wasn't what caused the divorce (after twenty-three years of marriage and three teenaged children), but I think it contributed towards it.

RSL, are you sure you're not confusing this with the story of how Portland was named?:RSLancastr wrote:

I suppose it's possible that the same thing happened in Salem, but I never heard about it when i lived there. Here's what Wikipedia has to say about Salem's naming history (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salem_Oreg ... in_of_name)... you could be living in "Chemeketa" =)The Portland Penny is the name subsequently given to a specific coin, a U.S. copper one-cent piece, used to decide the name of Portland, Oregon, United States.
The two founders of Portland, Francis Pettygrove from Portland, Maine and Asa Lovejoy from Boston, Massachusetts, both wanted to name the fledgling site—then known as The Clearing—after their respective home towns.
The coin toss was decided in 1845[1] with two out of three tosses which Pettygrove won.[2] The toss occurred in the parlor of the Ermatinger House, in Oregon City. This house, the oldest in Clackamas County, is now a museum.[3] Portland was incorporated in 1849.[4]
The coin, minted in 1835, is now on display in the Oregon Historical Society Museum.
Keep it Sizzlin'!

Yes, we lived about a mile from Chemeketa College for our first two years here... you could be living in "Chemeketa" =)
We lived in the in the North Lancaster neighborhood, in the Lancaster Commons apartments, two blocks off of Lancaster Street, a half mile or so north of the Lancaster Mall. It was fun, seeing our name everywhere!
Now we live in boring old South Salem.

I picked these up off of ebay from an older magician liquidating his magic shop supply after hanging onto it for 30 years! I received one opened and one unopened complete with tax seal! I took a close up of the ace for those of you that know the dating system, I am not fluent in this card language yet!

Just got the version 2 Jackson box for my Fed set. Had part 2 since the campaign. Part 1 had to piece together last year. Just finally got around to putting them in something. Also picked up the Jules Verne decks.

Lee Asher's site puts the T at either 1954 or 1974. After being out of town for a week, here is the haul Donna picked up from the post office today (minus the Whispering Imps uncut 1 of 10 signed by both Chris & Mark Stutzman).
A wide variety of French, British, Israeli, Russian, Icelandic (no, not that one), a pair of mini Tally Ho Circle Backs and of course some Bicycle and one 1907 Congress Panama souvenir pictorial deck - among others.

Re: The "Hey, look what I added to my collection!" thread
If I'm not mistaken, it should be dated 1954. The tax stamp is found between 1940 to 1965, and the T from the AoS means it's 1914, 1934, 1954, 1974, or 1994.shadowkat wrote:I picked these up off of ebay from an older magician liquidating his magic shop supply after hanging onto it for 30 years! Re: The "Hey, look what I added to my collection!" thread
or at this point even though Lee's cheat-sheet hasn't been updated, since it's on a 20-year cycle it likely is on those created this year (2014) as well. I haven't opened one of the Jules Verne decks, and frankly it's entirely possible that it was printed last year, but - we'll have validation of that soon from some of the kickstarter-based decks.

Re: The "Hey, look what I added to my collection!" thread
Just curious about this one: it's a transformational deck made in 2006 by "inky-dinky.com", but looking at that website indicates nothing except that it is a site about ink for inkjet and laser printers? Has anyone else seen this one? Any details about it beyond that's on the box and the pix I have?

This has got to be the coolest thing added to my deck collection so far. Ace of Spades and Hearts Federal 52 force decks. And a little surprise from Jackson (thanks!)...there are 56 cards in each deck.
best regards,
