Very cool aquisitions. I have the Trophy Whist deck, but with no box, and it has been played a little. That beauty looks new and has the box.

This Faro deck has the same courts as the Aces & Eights facsimile Faro I have in my sales thread. It's interesting to see the source.

All those old West movies had it wrong - the Faro game was more popular than poker, and very easily won. One table even became known as the suicide table since three of it's owners committed suicide after incurring huge gambling payout debts (then came the rigged dealing shoes). Even Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday worked as Faro dealers in saloons so I wonder whose hands have been on the deck JR has, though it doesn't look used.

Definitely not USPCC. Produced by Card Shark, the folks that make the Phoenix decks. Sorry I cant elaborate.

If you enjoy the Game of Thrones, you might be interested in this deck of cards which I got. They aren't USPCC, but they are very good quality, thick, with a linen finish:

The scan above is from the weathered version of the deck, it also comes in a normal, non-weathered version:

From the artist, on etsy.com. He is expensive, but the work is excellent, and I doubt many were made.

So, is Etsy the place where they sell so few quantities that the creators of the licensed products don't care about people making money off of their creations? If either of those Decks were released on Kickstarter or one of the Magic sites they wouldn't have lasted a day due to copyright infringement!

I'm a fan of Walking Dead and Game of Thrones, so I'll have to decide if they're worth the price for myself.

thanks, Randy

Yes, too expensive. I'll trade for some, if anyone's interested. And I have a lot to trade. ;)

Yeah, these Game of Thrones cards are very nicely done, but the creator did steal the designs for the cards (even if he did re-do the artwork himself) from another graphic artist, and he's stealing the likenesses of the actors and their characters from their respective copyright holders. The work is excellent, no doubt, and I'd love to own a deck (esp of the distressed version), but as a writer myself, I really can't support intellectual property theft.

(I've met George R. R. Martin a couple times. Nice guy. But I still wouldn't steal from him, regardless of how nice he is or isn't.)

Jim Tuckwell is the graphic designer who's ideas were lifted for this deck. See the article here: http://www.youthedesigner.com/2013/03/2 ... -tuckwell/

If Tuckwell ever secures the rights, which actually seems within the realm of possibility, I'd buy his deck in a heartbeat. He is quoted in the article linked to above as talking about creating a KS campaign should he complete the deck and secure the rights.

Paul Nojima appears to be a good artist, and he certainly has a good eye for design when it comes to choosing whose work he's going to, er, pay homage to. To his credit, I'll also note that he attributes Tuckwell for the design, even though he didn't ask for permission to use it. It'll be interesting to see what he comes up with when he starts promoting his own original work. Please note: I do not think Nojima is a bad person for taking Tuckwell's ideas and running with them. And then for selling Game of Thrones copyrighted materials without license. Rather, this strikes me as something a rookie fan does, out of love for the subject matter. However, Nojima's art shows real talent, and I think he has the chops to make it as a professional card designer / graphic artist in his own right. In the meantime, though, as much as I like these decks (and as much as I'd love to own one of each), I still can't pay top dollar to someone who is using other peoples' intellectual property without permission. <sigh>

True, but Jim has only created 4 cards over the last several years, and only had 3 cards when Paul did his. Jim's was more of a "wouldn't it be cool if..." with a few samples, which Paul then agreed with and actually created the whole deck. He redrew the 3 Jim had done (similar but not identical) and created the entire rest of the deck, from aces to jokers to back design and all the other courts himself.

As far as stealing from Martin, Paul doesn't use any copyrighted names anywhere, there is no tuckbox nor anything on the cards that says what they are. He is using likenesses of people, some symbols, and a few iconic quotes that are fairly generic in literal terms. While I'm sure Hollywood's big lawyers could crush him if they wanted, I doubt he's getting rich from this, and it's making the fans of the show happier than the less-than-impressive officially licensed cards did.

Also, several others have proposed deck ideas too:

Apparently, designing card decks is a pretty common fan activity for GoT.

I would assume it has something to do with "The Crown Royal Distilling Company", maybe a brand of liquor they make.

Nice find, Jay, very unique. You must have an unrivaled Bike collection by now :)

Judging from the plastic holder attached to the deck, it likely came around the neck of a bottle of one of these
