I am sure you all saw this but here it is
The Next Chapter for Kings Wild Playing Cards, Sherlock Holmes!
I happy to announce my next project. I have been in talks with the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Estate and I just received approval to make an officially licensed Sherlock Holmes Playing Card Deck. I have always been captivated by the characters and stories of Sir Conan Doyle and am excited to contribute my own style to a rich heritage a creativity. More details to follow but as of now I plan on going live with the project here on Kickstarter around the first of November.
Thanks again for all of your support,
Jackson

Re: New Sherlock Holmes Deck by Jackson Robinson
I'm a bit skeptical about a Sherlock Holmes deck - my concern is that the deck, and the court cards in particular, might come off as more a novelty deck instead of a serious deck that can be utilized by cardists and magicians. However, I guess if anyone can pull it off, it probably would be Jackson...

I think it'll be great! You could have the red cards as the good guys (Sherlock, Watson, Lestrade, Mycroft, etc) and the bad guys on the black suits (Moriarty, Irene Adler, Dr. Grimesby Roylott, etc)

Re: New Sherlock Holmes Deck by Jackson Robinson
Saw this this morning on FB.
Can't wait to see what he comes up with... Victoriana, opium dens, cobbled streets, London fog...
The fanboy in me instantly wanted Benedict Cumberbach / Johnny Lee Miller / Robert Downey Jr / Basil Rathbone likenesses... perhaps a bit novelty that way though!
As well as loving the character, I also live and grew up in Portsmouth - where Arthur Conan Doyle lived, practiced medicine, and wrote the early stories - so you can imagine how much I'm looking forward to this!
I work for local governemnt too - I could probably put Jackson in touch with the museum service - the city museum and Library house a permanent Holmes/Doyle exhibition which as well as looking at Doyle also celebrates Holmes' depiction in films, literature, theatre, tv, advertising and other media. I could well imagine them being interestted in acquiring a few decks for the collection (the quality and official licence will surely make them a must!)
More info about the collection here: http://www.conandoylecollection.co.uk/c ... ition.html
I could also take a photo or two of the deck(s) at some of the sites around the city
http://www.memorials.inportsmouth.co.uk ... -doyle.htm
Jackson - I'll PM you this stuff via KS once underway. Most of the contact info you might need will be on the sites mentioned above - but if I can help let me know!
EDIT: *Assuming you're interested in any of the above!

Re: New Sherlock Holmes Deck by Jackson Robinson
Jackson, as you would expect, has done a great job with this one. I've seen various parts and while different from Federal 52 (purposefully of course) it really looks lovely and I'm sure you will all be pleased. He's got a great eye, great design and having that official license from the Conan Doyle Estate doesn't hurt either.

He could do the opposite, that's just the traditional arrangement. Doesn't really matter.Sharpie wrote:Why black gotta be bad, yo?samurai007 wrote:I think it'll be great! Cue argument about whether Irene Adler was one of the "bad guys".samurai007 wrote:I think it'll be great! You could have the red cards as the good guys (Sherlock, Watson, Lestrade, Mycroft, etc) and the bad guys on the black suits (Moriarty, Irene Adler, Dr. Grimesby Roylott, etc)

Don't forget the iconic Jeremy Brett! He's the best, in my opinion. Check him out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeremy_Bre ... ock_Holmesmontecarlojoe wrote:...The fanboy in me instantly wanted Benedict Cumberbach / Johnny Lee Miller / Robert Downey Jr / Basil Rathbone likenesses... perhaps a bit novelty that way though!...
Played the role for a decade (84-94) and is considered to the be the quintessential Holmes of his era. See here:

Re: New Sherlock Holmes Deck by Jackson Robinson
Hey guys! sorry I haven't chimed in more yet. UC only works for me a few hours out of the day so I'm not always able to get on.
Here are a few details about the deck, don't want to spill to much yet cuz we still have month to go before it goes live.
I grew up on the Jeremy Brett tv series so a lot of my inspiration comes from there. However I'm creating my own take on all the characters and not creating likenesses of any specific actor who has played Holmes. You will see two distinctively different styles during this project, one of which is very different than the Fed52 style. I'm really excited about this project. The AC Doyle estate has made available to me Sherlockian Experts to help me really bring the whole set to life. I've been working on it off an on during the Fed52 fulfillment for about a month now, but have just went full go after receiving the license from the AC Doyle Estate. I already have one entire court set completed. More images to come throughout the month.
My characters and setting will be the original setting from the novels and short stories, Victorian London, and to answer your question before you even ask... No you will see absolutely No steampunk in this deck.
Feel free to ask any questions, and I'll see if I can answer them.

Jackson!!
Sooo many great pieces of news in that last post!
But here are the ones I'm most excited to hear:
I'm more excited than ever for this deck... if that's even possible.
So thank you, Mr. Robinson.
Sincerely,
Steffan (AKA Sharpie)

I was a Sherlock Holmes fan long before I was a card collector, and Jeremy Brett is by far my favorite. It's so amazing to see someone with obvious talent and skill, take on this inspiring theme.JacksonRobinson wrote:...absolutely No steampunk in this deck.

Re: New Sherlock Holmes Deck by Jackson Robinson
There's a hint on FB of different editions of the deck being made too...
Perhaps the Holmes deck will have the Rococo style scrolls and flourishes we've seen in Fed52...
I wonder what the other edition(s) and theme will be..? A hard edged more gothic style for a Moriarty deck maybe?

Might not a Watson Edition make for an interesting take?

Makes sense. Moriarty comes to mind easily because he is Holmes' antithesis - but he's only really appears in two stories.

Re: New Sherlock Holmes Deck by Jackson Robinson
'zackly. Watson was Holmes' true foil, it seems to me. Holmes represented everything ACD hated about skeptics. Doyle believed in fairies and the like; he wrote a story to mock non-believers, and unwittingly made that character an interesting and appealing hero. Much to his chagrin. (For more on this, see "Chapter 2: Fairies at the Foot of the Garden" from Flim-Flam by James Randi. I have other sources for further commentary along these lines.)
It always seemed to me that Watson ultimately represented ACD's putting up with the Holmes-style skeptic, and that it was Watson who was intended to be the more sympathetic of the two characters. Your interpretation may vary.

I'm really glad you guys are excited. I'm really trying to sharpen my focus about card design from the great lessons I'm learning along the way.
