eBay "You've been outbid!" notifications

Unread post by RSLancastr »

Back in the day, when someone outbid you on an item on eBay, eBay would immediately send you an email with a subject something like:

"You've been outbid on item [item description]!"

When the auction ended, you would immediately be sent an email, with a subject of either:

"Enjoy your [item description]" if you won, or "Sorry you didn't win [item description]" if you didn't win.

Nowadays, they don't seem to send the "You've been outbid on item [item description]!" one any more.

Is there a "receive outbid notification emails?" option in eBay User Profile somewhere?

Hey RJ, I'm generally a last minute sniper type, so I rarely ever get those notifications, but you can check your settings under your account tab on ebay. It's under communication preferences and the 'outbid' notification is the fourth selection down under the Buyer heading on my screen. If you are set up to receive those notifications still but aren't getting them, you can always contact ebay customer support for help. Also, make sure that the email address from ebay is saved in your contact list so it doesn't go to your junk or spam folder. Not sure what email provider you use, but I have a yahoo account and it sticks random non-spam mails in my junk folder so I have to check it all the time just in case. Hope you can get it fixed.

I do get the emails - although "Immediate" is generous. All too often I get the email after the sale has ended. (I blame Charlie for bidding with 15 seconds to go! ;))

You could try getting the ebay smartphone app - you might find the app notifications more reliable.

I rarely bid nowadays, choosing to purchase via "Buy It Now" instead (when available).

I have used AOL for my personal email since 1996 (switching to their browser-based (aol.com) email several years ago. (having dropped AOL as my ISP)).

I just checked my Spam folder, and found no Outbid notices there (good idea, though - thanks!)

Yeah, Snipers like Charlie are one reason I switched over to only using "But it Now" some time ago (the other reason being NSF charges in my bank account due to timing issues between PayPal and my bank ( PayPal would make sure that the funds were there, but would not lock nor withdraw them until a delay of sometimes several days, during which the funds may have been used elsewhere, resulting in NSF charges).

Unfortunately, my phone is not a smartphone. It is a moderatelyintelligentphone at best. ;)

Although I did not update my eBay profile, I am now receiving "You've been outbid!" emails.

I now realize that the reason I was not seeing them before may have been because I so seldom bid on items now (preferring to use "Buy it Now" options), and so was seldom (f ever) outbid on anything! I just didn't realize it!

Hehe, that's kinda funny. And I just now realized I called you RJ instead of RS in my other post, so sorry for that...what an ass. >_< Used to play a mmo and had a friend everyone called RJ so it must have been out of habit.

As for the sniping, it's only because I used to get sniped all the time when I first found ebay that I resorted to that method. Cable internet helps a lot. :D But now so many things I like have buy it now options that I normally go that route when I can anyway.

Glad you figured it out though, stuff like that can be really frustrating.

No worries, Charlie - at least you got the "R" right! :)

ETA: The sniping only bugged me, back in the day, when it was obvious the sniper was using one of the sniping utility programs which would automatically put in a bid with only seconds to go. Nowadays, since I bid so seldom (sticking mostly to items I can purchase using the "Buy it Now" feature), I can't even remember the last time someone sniped an item out from under me. It had to have been at least ten years ago!
