Let me be the first to say... that's hot.
Also, I see the potential of a reveal written in flames somewhere.

Re: Ellusionist Heat Deck
This must be the follow-up deck to the Fathom deck. I hope they execute the tuck box better with this deck. I'll give E credit for full-customization - court cards and pips in addition to the back design, Ace of Spades, and Jokers. But more often than not, they disappoint with the tuck box. If you have a well designed cards, put them in a tuck box to match.

New teaser:
These look a lot better than Fathom IMO. I thought Fathom was a bit of a disappointment when taking them out of that sparkly box and finding them with white borders (though it was better than your average Bicycle deck white borders).

Re: Ellusionist Heat Deck
I sure hope they do something more with the box instead of the bare-bones, budget value model, 4 color print with no embellishments like on Fathom.
That was a lovely deck but that box, man. It's like some accountant came in and said "you can only spend $1.85/deck and NO MORE and if you add any features that increase costs you are so totally fired!!!"
I expect a plain box from a 16 year old kid doing his first deck on Kickstarter, not from one of the largest companies in our market.

Re: Ignite Deck by Ellusionist - Coming Sept 11
Man, is E even a magic company anymore? I personally don't like decks that have a different back (border) color from the faces. Unless this is a red deck, and the Jokers show that its not, it's not a magic-friendly deck. You have these, the Madison Players (full bleed back), and the Executive deck (possibly the worst deck ever from E) as some of the most recent releases as decks that aren't ideal for magic use.

Re: Ellusionist Heat Deck
Given a choice, I'd rather the money be spent on a clever design and good card stock for the deck than on the tuck. Seems to me like some producers have been spending a lot of effort on the tuck boxes, but that hasn't always been matched by the deck inside. (T11's "Rebels" leap to mind.)Encarded wrote:I sure hope they do something more with the box instead of the bare-bones, budget value model, 4 color print with no embellishments like on Fathom.

While I agree that the Fathom box isn't quite all-that-and-a-bag-of-chips, I think it has less to do with budget and more to do with simply being a (mild) mis-step in execution. I suspect the glossy 4-color tuck was supposed to evoke the idea of being slick and watery, but it just doesn't quite make it. Some foil stamping on this new deck's tuck box might do a better job of evoking flames, and similarly, I suppose some embossing on Fathom's box might have done a better job of evoking depth, but execution doesn't always live up to intention.
All that said, would you rather spend an extra buck per deck to get a slightly better box? (It may not cost E that much per deck to emboss or add hot stamping, but that does seem to be the price differential they pass along to the customer.) I think the Rebel and the retail Quicksilver boxes over-sold the cards inside, making the extra cost particularly irksome; I don't feel like the Fathom tuck was guilty of underselling it's deck, so much.

Re: Ignite Deck by Ellusionist - Coming Sept 11
These days it shouldn't be a choice between well designed cards OR a nice tuck box' it should be well designed cards AND a nice tuck box. With the prices they're charging at the volume of decks they can produce, E, T11, D&D and BC should offer both. Especially when we have independent card designers like Jackson, Encarded, Uusi, and Randy (to name a few), bringing really strong decks, the big companies aren't the only game in town anymore and we have more options and higher expectations.

Re: Ignite Deck by Ellusionist - Coming Sept 11
I concede the point. I suppose what I'm trying to get at is that the Fathom tuck seemed more like an accidental, mild mis-step than a willful cop-out, and I've been more disappointed when the decks haven't lived up to the promise of their packaging (such as the examples I listed previously) than the other way around. But you're right: for the prices we're paying, both the deck and the packaging should be well thought-out.sinjin7 wrote:These days it shouldn't be a choice between well designed cards OR a nice tuck box' it should be well designed cards AND a nice tuck box. Re: Ignite Deck by Ellusionist - Coming Sept 11
Exactly. E, T11, D&D are not making 2500 decks. They are making 10,000, 20,000, even 60,000 (in the case of the recent D&D box set) at a time and they will be getting pretty serious discounts. A box+deck with all the trimmings that might cost me $4 undoubtedly costs them much, much less. That's why they can "undercut" the small independent folks like me and sell their premium decks for $7. All they have to do is take the time and choose to add the features.sinjin7 wrote:These days it shouldn't be a choice between well designed cards OR a nice tuck box' it should be well designed cards AND a nice tuck box. Getting back to this deck, it's unabashedly intense and I like that. I certainly wouldn't have designed it that way but it sure looks cool and I'll probably pick up a few. Bright coloration, no borders, lots of edge detail...that's pretty neat stuff from the normally restrained "big guys."

Anyone else feels the cards look better burnt ?? Also it seems like they carried on with the crappy tuckboxes over from the fathom series. Not my favourite deck at the moment...

Yeah, I was actually thinking "not bad" when I saw the burnt one...then I scrolled down. They're not terrible but I'm not rushing to get em. I'll buy a pair if Mike stocks them.

Re: Ignite Deck by Ellusionist - Coming Sept 11
Looks like a very cool deck, it reminds me of an orange and red Artifice deck.
Not too sure about the Ace of Spades, I think they could have focused on more sort of thin flames or something, but apart from that, really cool. Cant wait to get them!
