Nautical Playing Cards by The Blue Crown

Unread post by vasta41 »

Image

From e-mail:
The Nautical Deck was designed by artist Edo Huang, and is reminiscent of a classic bordered Bee design. Everything about the deck is inspired by the sea. From the rope-like pattern & life preservers integrated into the back design, to the rope border on the court cards,
and the impressive ship joker.

The cards are printed on a thin, flexible, and durable stock that's manufactured and hand-finished in Shanghai. The more they are used, the better these cards perform! The cards have a fine embossed texture, with a feel and handling unlike any other deck we've produced to date.

More details (and the cards themselves!) will be revealed at 8PM eastern time on Thursday, August 29th only at The Blue Crown.

I don't see a back design. Whenever something is left out I always think it's on purpose, and for a reason.

...I know, I'm getting more paranoid with every deck release

No court cards as well, typically we can expect to see standard courts then. First time a major company has adopted a non-uspcc deck

Thanks for dropping in, it's always nice to see another deck designer on the boards! Looking forward to see how the court cards look with the revised border.

Second if you're counting CARC's Global Titans.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it sounds like the backs are standard bee backs with a border instead of full bleed. That, coupled with minor re-coloration of the court cards, doesn't make me feel too excited about this "custom" deck. I don't like this trend in using overseas card manufacturers. I'm convinced this is just a cost cutting measure to increase profit margins and not an improvement in quality or innovation. The card stock on some of these overseas cards are good (Global Titans, FatBoyEatAllDay, Legends, etc..), but the finish is always lacking when compared to the USPC.

i agree with Alric here on the finish of those "overseas" cards.
they start to loose their fanning ability very fast BUT they handle so well in cuts/flourishes and keeping the shape...i like them for that.

well i´ll be checking them out for sure.

I'll probably end up picking up a set when I find them locally. I've sailed competitively before, and have family who used to be in the maritime trade.

I think only the blue deck works imo, but still pretty boring, this theme has great potential

I like the design. Would have bought a brick if they are USPCC decks.
But well they are not. I'll pass for now, might pick up one each later.

http://playingcardcollector.net/2013/08 ... sa-nemetz/ I think these cards make for a much better nautical deck imho. This is just side tracking tho.

So, I'm of a very mixed mind about this deck.

First, I like the backs. I realize they are not amazing, but they appeal to my sense of of design. They tell me, "These are cards you can play with daily. Use with confidence." These are the kinds of decks I'd expect to find lying around the summer cottage at the lake. That is, if I had a summer cottage at the lake.

But the "nautical theme" is anemically developed with the image of thick ropes being draped over the Aces and bordering the courts. Ah, yes, then there's the courts. Here's where I'm of a particularly divided mind. I guess if these were USPCC cards, I'd have no real issues. The courts are a simplified version of the standard Bike courts:
IMG_3476.jpg
IMG_3476.jpg (70.17 KiB) Viewed 1045 times
(Sample of courts taken from a standard Bicycle Rummy deck, left, and the Nautical Blue deck, right.)

But... these weren't printed by USPCC. Which means USPCC's court designs were tweaked and then printed elsewhere. As a writer, I always feel a bit irked when I see someone's intellectual property misappropriated like this.

They do include a gaffe with the regular back on one side and a gaffed back on the other:
IMG_3478.jpg
IMG_3478.jpg (110.01 KiB) Viewed 1045 times
(One of these backs is not like the other...)

Lastly, out of the box, these have a very different feel from Bikes. They have a much stiffer, more durable feel to them than a typical USPCC card; they are almost plastic-like in their snappiness. They also, out of the box, fan for sh**, just like some plastic cards tend to do. (Specifically, the Nauticals are mildly clumpy out of the box.) The ad copy says that this is the kind of deck that gets better the more you use them. I definitely get a sense of durability with these puppies, and I wonder if it may well be the case that breaking these in will make them a friendlier card.

I plan to put one of these blue decks in my standard rotation to see how it stands up after some normal use. I suspect they may hold up at least as well as the deck of Bees I keep putting to the test. But regarding the courts... and, for that matter, the standard Bicycle fonts and pips on the number cards... yeah, that bothers me.
