It Finally Happened

Unread post by SeanWhelan »

I landed a career position!! I am now a full time Web Designer! : D

Over these past few months, I've felt so depressed about where I was career wise. I received my Bachelor's 2 years ago and ever since I kept applying to jobs. No call backs, no feedback no...well nothing.
I sat down and redesigned my portfolio: http://seanwhelandesigns.wix.com/portfolio" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; then applied to a few more and bam! Got a few responses.

I went on at least 6 or 7 interviews for various Graphic Design related jobs but got no second call backs. I went on an interview last Wednesday and got a call back that Friday saying I was the person for the job!
My heart skipped a beat I was so happy! I went in their confident, I brought my tablet to show images off my website, I even took my Galvanic deck to show them what I've been doing.

I explained to them the entire process and showed them the card, explained that all of the designs were me, I had to market them, follow the guidelines etc etc and they were amazed at what I've done.

So now I am so excited!! I already had my first half day yesterday (still with my current i.t. job so I have 2 weeks left). I got my own desk and was thrown right it the hot seat. Very basic training, quick tour around the office then I was told to make a website for a client. 4 hours to myself, at my desk, drinking coffee, relaxing and in photoshop the entire time.....couldn't of asked for anything better.

Right when I was about to leave, the owner of the company who I never met before (2 other directors interviewed me) came up to me and was impressed at what I did already : o
So I really hope I made a good impression with my team and I am so excited to work full time in this field.

I also wanted to apologize because I pretty much stopped designing playing cards these past few months : / I had no motivating. Like I was heading nowhere with the field. So now that I have this position and I am in Photoshop all day...its time to get back into that mode because I am happy. This paid off and I am finally happy.

Everyone here was amazing to me with my cards so I wanted to let everyone now! I'm back!

No need to apologize, Sean. We all get in a slump every now and then, and some times it's bigger than usual.

Good to hear things are going your way :) Everyone loves a success story!

Thank you so much everyone for the support!!
This week has been crazy. I worked 60 hours (not including travel time) between my current job and the new one.

I started the new one on Tuesday, got my own desk and they showed me what I'll be doing. My manager of the department showed me the system for like 20 mins then pretty much said time to go to work!
I'll be working mon - fri 9-5, salary based and when I come in, I check my to do list for the day and get right to work in photoshop. The past 3 days I've been there I am completely to myself
and no one bothers me at all : o such a different work environment compared to a retail store.

As of right now I design the visual concepts for food businesses (basically mom and pop shops) across the states. I work all in photoshop then check off that the site concept is complete. Later with my position after the clients approve the concepts, I slice up the site in photoshop then import them into visual studio to be coded for web : D

On Friday alone I knocked out 4 website concepts, 8 pages in total! Each site gets a splash page and a home page. I am so excited to be where I am especially when I am only 23! This isn't a job, this is my career and to be working in photoshop for 7 hours of the day and get paid for it is a dream come true haha

Wow, amazing! You are working so hard.
Sounds like a great work environment. Congratulations Sean!

( Not to rain but I hope you are aware of RSI risks - something I have had to deal with after too much computer work. Wouldn't wish it on anyone.)

Congrats Sean!

I also work as a computer artist and it is fun especially once you get settled in. I do vinyl graphics and logos for businesses.
It is awesome that you have your Galvanic Deck design on your resume, really impressive! Just don't work too hard though. If you want to make a career out of it learn to pace yourself. Good luck man!
