Slate Tally-Ho by KWP
a very...standard deck by KWP, not sure its my thing as a result (not enough metallic elements on the cards) but I know there are some standard deck enjoyers here. Likely starting Friday, and yes printed by USPCC
Standard, limited tucks and gilded

I'll have to see what the other versions look like. I have always liked KW's courts.

As I already said, I like these but the creativity of KWP seems to have really plummeted the last year.

I was thinking the same. A recolor and rehash.
Perhaps this is to give newer collectors an opportunity to get acquainted to a previous deck and perhaps delve into hunting for some of the older versions. Trying to make it make sense.

I would be fine with this release if it came alongside much more creative decks, but to use KS for something like this which required very little design time or innovation is disheartening.

Re: Slate Tally-Ho by KWP
Yeah, KWP has undergone a real shift. I really wonder how it's affected their bottom-line. I can't be the only one that's significantly decreased their purchases from them. The last two years of their subscription programs I had bought ~25 decks each year from them between subs and other releases. This past year it was like 4. His output has very significantly gone down. Which was partly the intention, so that he could focus on quality over quantity, but creatively that hasn't happened. Maybe he's just one of those guys that works much better under a deadline.

If Jackson is happy to produce recolored decks, why not focus on the unfinished Pi Slice series? Like others in this thread, my KWP purchases have ground to a halt after many years of supporting the brand.

Decks purchased direct from KWP in the last 5 years: 0 (last order was May 2020 but those were actually decks I was owed from 2019)
Decks purchased from Penguin Magic since 2020: 22 (all cheaper than they would have been direct from KWP)

I like the deck but don’t see why they’re using kickstarter for the release. For an established brand with a functional website, seems weird to go through kickstarter.

I would have thought it could be more profitable outside of ks because of the % they take but I guess that's accounted for with ks prices. They don't want to be left holding the bag.

I think it provides the opportunity to reach a much more varied audience outside the playing card collecting realm

Re: Slate Tally-Ho by KWP
It is the litmus test. If they can't reach funding, they know it's not going to sell and consequently will not pursue the endeavor. They may get more customers as you say idk but that seems to reason with more advertising.shermjack wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 3:28 pmI think it provides the opportunity to reach a much more varied audience outside the playing card collecting realm

Re: Slate Tally-Ho by KWP
The Tally-Ho brand is more widely known than KWP so yes, going on Kickstarter will make more sense for the wider audience. Before Cardistry custom decks became a thing, cardists seemed to love the Tally-ho circle backs as the circle shaped helped with the flourishes, IIRC.
You can see the most of the KWP Tally-Ho series on Kickstarter. It's one of JR's very early deck series, going back to 2014 with the very first one being the KWP Tally-Ho Blue ; which wasn't on KS.
Looking closer, you can see that each back in the series is different, so it's not just a recolor. It's a shame that this deck is monochromatic, IMHO. The overall design is really nice.
Also, I don't follow his Table Players but the courts look more detailed for this deck. That would be fitting to introduce the revised courts with the TH Slate after 10 yrs, because the KWP TH Blue was the very first deck with his now standard KWP courts. I hope this is not a one-off design with Slate as I would love to see these courts in full color.
For those interested, you can see the Tally-Ho blue uncut sheet with the full courts and back here : https://kingswildproject.com/products/t ... 5900037319

I vaguely remember uspcc putting a stop to custom tally-ho decks some years ago. Does anyone else remember that? And if that's true, @Jackson, how did you get around that or did they finally loosen up their policy?

Re: Slate Tally-Ho by KWP
Whenever KWP has used the wording Tally-Ho it would have had to be approved. If not Jackson would have had to do what he did with his vintage reimagined 'Oriole' and rename it
As for the back design, I remember Harvonsgard once pointing out to me that Orbit have no exclusive rights to the circle so I doubt USPCC do either

Re: Slate Tally-Ho by KWP
It was approved, the only reason that this campaign didn't happen in late November was USPCC was dragging their heels on the approvals in time to post it then. (and then KWP didnt want to run a KS during their 12 days promo). I get the impression they didn't actually get approval until a few days ago.Honeybee wrote: ↑Fri Jan 10, 2025 2:27 pm Whenever KWP has used the wording Tally-Ho it would have had to be approved. Re: Slate Tally-Ho by KWP
I've gotta say I miss Jackson's monthly subscriptions. I loved almost every deck from the both the regular and vintage reimagined subs, but haven't bought a thing since he stopped those. On the plus side, my bank account seems to be doing much better lately!
I've spent way more than I care to admit on playing cards, but I'll still buy just about anything that Lorenzo, Jackson, or Gio make.

I miss it too! I still buy some of his decks but much, much fewer. I can't imagine that this has not hurt KWP's bottom line. Maybe with this slow-down in creativity, he is reloading the creative juices.EvilDuncan wrote: ↑Mon Jan 13, 2025 7:44 am I've gotta say I miss Jackson's monthly subscriptions. Ditto. On the plus side, no longer paying for my two subscriptions let me redirect that money toward a reward tier on Patreon for TWI.brownsl wrote: ↑Mon Jan 13, 2025 9:52 amI miss it too! I have just the Scarlet Display deck and Olive Player's edition. The Scarlet KS was before I started collecting in earnest, so I picked it up on the secondary market. I think these two complement each other nicely, but I don't feel the need to complete the set.

Somebody is getting Henry/SoCal to sell a lot of KWP oldies lately - they mostly go 'too rich' for me (Aussie dollar is worth SFA right now)EvilDuncan wrote: ↑Mon Jan 13, 2025 7:44 am I've gotta say I miss Jackson's monthly subscriptions. I am a little worried as to whether JR's creative juices have dried up. Promoting his daughter's cards is making her a nepo baby
If nothing else, there has to be dozens of great old decks out there that Jackson could reimagine - maybe he needs to link up with historian Jason McKinstry again

Re: Slate Tally-Ho by KWP
Interestingly, of all the KWP Tally-ho decks, the Black Diamond has appreciated the least. Odd in that it's one of the first custom metaluxe decks and the only one with foil on the backs. I have the deck and it's really shiny. Very nice to play with. But, hey, makes it relatively easier to pick up copies of the deck for those interested.
KS original price: $27
Ebay average price range: $33-$40.
Yes, more decks printed compared to the others (700-850) but still, not sure why this deck isn't as popular as the rest. Anyone have an idea why?

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ki ... ory_id=273The Black Diamond Tally Ho is the third deck in the Kings Wild Luxury Tally Ho series. The Black Diamonds utilizes The United States Playing Card Companies new foiling process, MetalLuxe to be one of the first custom decks to use the new technology. This will also be the first time Kings Wild has produced an all black court set.
These decks are both very expensive to produce and also very limited in their production number.
Only 1000 Black Diamonds will be produced along with 50 Legacy Editions and 10 Tactical Legacy Editions.
