King’s Head Playing Cards by Joker and the Thief

Unread post by manu »

King’s Head Playing Cards are coming soon to Kickstarter. Inspired by vintage design, we wanted to bring out our rendition of a sophisticated and classic deck of cards designed for use at the card table. King’s Head utilises vintage style court cards to purposefully place it in a bygone era.

Can someone tell me why the back of the tuck is so amazing but the back of the actual cards is so... not?

Tuck back would have been a good card back no?

Only showing an Ace almost always means standard courts. These will be a pass. Love the tuck though.

Maybe not Adam, I have some recollection of wondering whether the courts would be the same as the courts they use for their Crown decks and noted they were not BUT I cannot find where I think I saw this

I thought the intro on the pre-Kickstarter page mentions this deck was illustrated from the ground up, meaning all new art?

20 usd for this type of deck is not my thing. Same as last reserve campaign. I don't like the business of selling them expensive on ks, for a couple reasons, and often sell them cheaper later. J&T decks are quality but not worth the price imo.

I only care for one of the backs and the courts don't draw me in so it's a pass for me.

Forget the King's Head, I cannot get my head around the fact that this funds in a day and Wishers still hasn't for the same funding :o

Ive stopped trying to make sense of a lot of other things but I see a lot more effort in the wishers deck than this one

They're both standard ish courts but this one has a much better tuck and card back IMO. I'm not backing either, but that's a big part of it. Also that Joker and the Thief have a much larger presence in the hobby currently.

I think you're partly right with the artistic effort since it seems the joker decks are just copy and paste courts but the tuck of J&T looks like more effort and value to me. Does the Wishers decks use foil and a thicker matte stock for the tuck? If not then that is a contributer to people seeing the value of materials used when considering the price.

sure and thats another "to each their own" as I've said many times you can sell me decks in plain white boxes with sharpie markings for the theme and artist. My interest is what's in the boxes not the boxes.

I dont give a single point towards deciding to back a campaign backed on the tucks. But again thats just me, I know others feel differently and thats quite ok with me as well.

I always liked decks with artistic references and easter eggs.
Surely, the joker on the left is a Commedia dell’Arte Pantalone connection.
Other creators have used the same reference and for good reason.

I actually appreciate this deck idea but I feel like the courts are downplayed so much in the project that they actually highlighted the one weakness for me enough to not want to jump on.

If they update the project with an expansion of the presentation of the courts they might persuade me enough to change my mind.

The tuckbox does look nice, but then to just get a monocolour of it for the cards themselves? That is a bit of a tease.

Early 1900s vintage, hey... Hmm, I wish that Ace was a little more ornate, just like how they presented it in the top row there.

Not really feeling the monocolour standard courts. I get you want to try something a little different to better differentiate the offering, but it's not quite hitting it.

Now I don't know if there is a bit of "aging" going on with some of those cards or not (It looks like it for the Ace and maybe the Jokers, but not for the courts), but that is a nice touch there.

I see what the idea is there, to try get that vintage luxury feel that seems to pick the best parts of the vintage eras. It goes alright, but maybe needs a bit more.
I tell you what.

I don't understand the King's Head on the tuck being a totally different style to any of the Kings - the inconsistency throws me
The aces shown as the inspiration for the AoS would have inspired me to choose any one of them over the one created :ugking:

Will the basic decks be available after the Kickstarter campaign? I just want one basic deck. Love the tuck box and back, not really thrilled about the monotone courts.
