Boy are these great. I just can't justify $27 per deck.

Project update with an article detailing the dates that I chose to include in the postage stamps and their significance in aviation history.

The AoS is the standout card because it is so much cleaner

I checked and somehow I have two of each of these which I don't recall purchasing. Glad I did! Past me was smarter me.Squiddle_Ink wrote: ↑Wed Oct 16, 2024 3:08 pm Digital Petroglyphs all disappeared very quickly. I only have 6 decks left myself. It might be nice to revisit them. That would be Lawrence's decision, as it was a Legend's commissioned deck. I did enjoy making that one.

WOW! The incredible Chris Moyer at Chambertin Cards strikes again. What a talented photographer he is. I'm thrilled with the level of detail and use of light in these glamour shots he has taken for me. I really appreciate the effort put into this project; the design and concept are truly impressive. However, the price point of over 18USD for a deck without foil and gilding is giving me pause in fully supporting this project. Oddfellows: The Dude from Stockholm17 and Penguin Magic are offering decks with similar specifications at 17USD. I might consider getting just one deck for now.

Re: High Flyers Playing Cards by Squiddle Ink
The price point for this deck is similar to the spec-comparable standard edition of the deck you mentioned but High Flyers has pearlescent matt paper stock and is a limited run of 1000 decks. Price points are higher for limited and short runs.DeepCard wrote: ↑Tue Oct 22, 2024 11:18 pm I really appreciate the effort put into this project; the design and concept are truly impressive. Re: High Flyers Playing Cards by Squiddle Ink
It's a little unfair to compare a small creator to a combo of 2x of the biggest brands in the playing card world. Not a level playing field.DeepCard wrote: ↑Tue Oct 22, 2024 11:18 pm I really appreciate the effort put into this project; the design and concept are truly impressive. Keep supporting the smaller brands that you enjoy and believe in and one day they will be in a position to print larger runs, get better prices for components etc and offer comparable prices to buyers on the other end.
Squiddle has also chosen to print with Legends who still maintain a premium name and price compared to some other manufacturers she could have chosen, who may have looked better for her bottom line, but not necessarily produced quite the same quality of final product (absolutely not mentioning any names!)
Cheers

Re: High Flyers Playing Cards by Squiddle Ink
Bird Deck! Always fun to see these!
I see some of those birds that come down under here. I like how the birds themselves have come out, as well as trying to mix their plumage colouration and trying to make it as uniform as possible.
The only thing that does get me is, well, unless I'm missing something, it's not inherently clear as to which bird corresponds to which rank/suit just off the appearance. Yes, we have the index, but I feel like there is a lack of immediate identifying features. I was looking at the descriptions for each rank, and what they have. At first, it looked like they get more uniform prestige as it goes up the ranks (The bird gets a special helmet at the Queen rank! The bird gets special goggles at the King rank!) But unless I'm being draft, I can't see those differences (and well, similarities of the rank) as clearly.
It's interesting, because you have two falcons of the Spade Suit, but I couldn't tell you which one was the King just on the illustration alone.
And I guess on that topic, I assume that the birds have some common links between who goes in what rank, and who goes in each suit. Does it come with like a little stat table as to the stars of this air show and their what their achievement is? I know Stockholm 52 packs those tables into his decks as well. You mentioned some of the achievements here, but is there any other way to see it in the deck?
Other than that, I love the design and theming of the deck (Kinda wish each bird had their own little trademark thing going on aside from the species name tag, but maybe things would get a little too busy. I was thinking like their nicknames are on the jackets, which also hint as to what their achievements are, and adds a little more character to each bird). Hope you do well with this, because this is a very nice deck.

Re: High Flyers Playing Cards by Squiddle Ink
I wanted the backs (would simply have HAD TO have them without the yellow feathers) but the faces were just too busy for me eg Why did we need the PAR AVION stickers on every single court - boring repetition IMO. I do know I am going to have an SJK deck one day

Re: High Flyers Playing Cards by Squiddle Ink
I understand your reasoning and yes many decks do have a clear court ranking but many art decks that stray away from classic court designs do not. The variety of reasons for my choice of birds was not something that would fit easily on the card. However, I did provide a project update with detailed explanations of the achievements of each species that led to them being selected for this deck. This can be read here...Pro-Pain wrote: ↑Sat Nov 02, 2024 7:51 am Bird Deck! Always fun to see these!

As for "trademarks", I understand your reasoning here. The birds do have little trademarks for their own branch of a fictional airline (Condor Aviation Group & Royal Albatross Airways etc) but these are reflected on the pip cards. There is another update with a detailed breakdown of these here...
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/sq ... ts/4227312
These icons are all depicted as airmail stamps throughout the deck and feature important dates in aviation history also.

Yeah, 3 posts from over 8 months ago and the 2 recent posts - spread over 2 threads
Two of these in the drafting thread were trying to convince you to produce 2 versions of the deck
What can I say other than - I am a bloody opinionated old bastard
I will try to cease and desist

Re: High Flyers Playing Cards by Squiddle Ink
The design of the card backs was definitely a strong driving force for this project. I wasn't a big fan of the writing on the court faces because I thought it was overdoing it slightly and taking away some light from the images...but overall, well done.
