Who Art in Heaven - new art playing cards

Unread post by JackBrutusPenny »

It’s my pleasure to announce here a new narrative-driven campaign set to rocket you into the stars. Launching in 6 days, Who Art in Heaven is in pre-launch now.

Simple project - just cards
All cards gilded
All card front and back with invisible UV ink

Follow the story of a young scribe dreaming of the heavens, and see if the cleric can bring him back down to earth (and below into their warren).

Kind regards,

Jack (an unverified creator)

(By the way, what does it mean to be a verified creator, or not to be?) ;)

I’ll admit none of your previous work has been to my personal taste, but what I’ve seen so far of this deck I find really compelling! Looking forward to seeing more, I’ll probably be in for this one!

It's more interesting where the rabbit is putting that pipe... feels like snow in the summer, hue hue hue.

That's perfectly fine, art is subjective and certain styles and themes don't appeal to all. I am of course pleased you may be interested in this new adventure :) See below for a little more.

Not sure I understand this, but I second it! An Analysing Index does not sound like my cup of tea.

Don't ever ask a rabbit where he puts his pipe ;)

Some of the UV. It is very hard to capture in photography - but I would personally say that it is more clear and striking than these can show.

Analysing Index was a poor attempt at being smart Jack, as fingers (Index) have been one area that have prompted some AI accusations directed at other artists, I feared that that was what JB was suggesting in regards to the interesting pinkys

No AI claims. They just look strange is all and off putting. AI doesn't bother me if the art is nice and the producer is honest about it. I don't support anyone that crosses too far over the line. I like the Trust No Fella deck but will not buy it because of the thievery. If the marketing is too dishonest then I will avoid backing the campaign ie: false claims of exclusivity or lowest possible price or # of copies or purposely being vague about details in order to sort of suggest things that aren't true. There are good and bad business practices and therefore a choice to make. The bad ones make the good ones stand out more.

Oh, I see. No AI. Just fingers that I like - all courts have slightly exaggerated head and finger proportions (as a style I wanted to try for this) if that’s a turn off for any :) they are also rabbits dressed as medieval astrologers, FYI. ;)

(Whenever I upload here, the colours go haywire. These do not represent the real work).

your art style is worth a second look. I'm happy to view more accurate depictions once posted. A bear riding a bicycle is rather odd but interesting and appealing to see if it's done right.

?? All the fingers are proportionate except the pinky. That is a little different than what you are trying to say.

Because I don't get offended to that extent by words. Some people do and that's OK for them. I'd rather hear what is being said in order to form opinions about it and comment or ignore it. Most of the time I just ignore it. To say that because I don't always agree or to follow your claim that I don't like most of the things you post, is a bit off and rest assured that I'm not sure anything you do or say on this forum would offend me enough to block you. You're welcome to try and prove me wrong though 😉. You'd be the first (I have never blocked anyone on this site before).
P.s. I hadn't noticed the index finger being what I would say is slightly longer than normal. If that is the style then that's what it is, so be it. It doesn't change my thoughts that the very long pinky in the first pics looks strange to me. I seem to have a problem with you laughing at my opinion and basically saying it holds no water because the premise of a rabbit in clothes or having fingers or whatever doesn't make sense to begin with? I should block you because I'm acting unreasonable?

I understand that blocking is not your thing, so I will just block you as it is my problem that you decrease my enjoyment of the forum

KGthePrince wrote: Wed Sep 25, 2024 10:13 am Hey Jack, out of curiosity what's the difference between the kickstarter and the Patreon version?
I'm not entirely sure of the answer, but the tuck does have a foil variation. I'm not sure if these are two different gildings or the same one from different angles.
The first picture includes a 1 of 30 prototype with mixed color wax seal. The middle two decks are the same, so 3 versions.

Re: Who Art in Heaven - new art playing cards

Unread post by JackBrutusPenny »

Hey everyone, thank you for your questions! I’m happy to explain, but please understand that it’s now a bit slapped together and I had intended to create information that clearly introduced everything in consumable amounts.

There are only two versions. The public version comes with UV, is gilded, and with all features as shown on the campaign. It is limited to 1000, with 515 spaces available in the project. I think it looks lovely and the UV is really cool.

The Patreon version is limited to 250, and has the following changes: a different, starry gilding; an additional second foil layer on the tuck, adding details and showing 250 limited run; and a collector’s band showing that it is the Patreon 2024 piece.

Regarding the prototype, I wanted to make a couple needed to test the artwork, and for photography and other purposes. As I did last year, I negotiated with my printer for the prototype and had a limited run of 30 made so that I could give them to Fellow Pioneer patrons. They do not have gilding, or UV, or foiling on tuck (because such a print run can’t afford such features). They are for the artwork. Instead, I handmade a wax seal stamp of mixed wax for these limited pieces.

In order for me to make this a career and stop teaching, I need to make the Kickstarter projects more stable and increase Patreon to make it more sustainable. My hope was that people would love this simple campaign but highly deep and whimsical deck. With the level of Patreon as it is currently, I was able to afford half payment up front. So, the decks are made. I wanted to give back to my Patreon platform and encourage more to join to make it into that sustainable image. So, in addition to the weekly behind-the-scenes and real involvement in projects (some of the artwork for this project was a collaboration with a handful of children (my son and patreon members’ children), early access and more, I am trying hard to create exclusive content - for only $3/month I think it’s very reasonable. :) but I couldn’t exactly afford a Patreon exclusive only for this project. This split system, which I believe many do, is something I am exploring and I hope works moving forward.

In addition, Who Art in Heaven has been a deep and time-consuming project but is not my main project I have been working on this year. This is a project begun on Patreon and in order to achieve this it meant working through the night and needing that Patreon platform support for printing. My main project has been 1.5-10 years in the making, depending on how you see it, and is a sort of magnum opus of my work, and is coming hopefully later this year. I’m super excited to share the innovative ideas and highly detailed work for that. Also, I had been creating a very, very personal project in full collaboration with my son. I had planned on bearing the crazy costs and printing just a handful for my family. I’m yet to reveal it, but I shared a little on Patreon and there was wonderful enthusiasm there, enough for me to ask if they would like it to become a real Patreon exclusive for 2024. That said, with my Patreon level I can’t afford to print such a piece, so I’ll need to take pre-orders on the platform to hopefully add enough additional funding to be able to bring that to print.

I will continue to strive to give back to my Patreon platform subscribers in content, engagement and new windows into my worlds. And my goal is to reveal all of these plans over the next few months in order to grow that platform for the new year.

At the same time, I will continue to push my main projects and any others that become Kickstarter campaigns to the limits of bringing narrative-driven, innovatively designed pieces of art. This is my main platform and I have and am continuing to create fantastically whimsical journeys to bring you all on, one coming up.

I have held the Who Art in Heaven (main version) and though it pushed me in various experimental ways that are also outside of my typical design aesthetic - I’m very, very happy with it…it seems to be my wife’s favourite of my work to date.

I apologise again for the deluge of information. As said, I had planned on sharing this in a more digestible way. The purpose of this post is to answer some questions above that come from the natural curiosity having seen images online, and to clarify my plans and intentions.

If I remember our reasoning correctly, "Deck Artist" could be anyone who posts WIP stuff in the Drawing Board section, while "Verified Designer" is for those who have successfully produced and delivered a deck.

In any case, this was long overdue :)

Who Art in Heaven is close to its final week of the live campaign. For those on board, you can follow along with the ongoing story and see the full courtly set this coming Monday, and for everyone here, it is my pleasure to introduce some of our whimsical characters.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ja ... ying-cards

This project is an experimental exploration of mine, incorporating UV inks with playful designs co-created by me and a team of wonderful children. All cards are limited, gilded pieces. And all my work helps support animal welfare, this project focussing on work with providing invaluable resources for rabbit owners and families to best take care of their companions, especially during the current RHVD2 endemic in the Western US.
