Hello eveyone

Unread post by SRO »

I've just really gotten into playing cards this year. My wife and I started hosting poker nights and we wanted some playing card decks other than just standard. We've bought a lot! Kings Wild, Art of Play, and Black Roses are among our favorites. We also check Kickstarter pretty constantly.

I'd really like to learn some basic cardistry, but it's very slow going. I thought I'd be able to pick the basics pretty quickly, because I took piano for 15 years and I can solve a Rubik's cube in under a minute consistently. Even with that kind of coordination, it's really difficult! I have a lot of respect for cardists. It's incredible to see such complexity made so smooth.

I've gotten into playing card design, and I hope to start pushing out successful Kickstarters this year. I've got one going now, but I don't want to start out my first post with an advertisement. I hope I can contribute to the forum!

Welcome aboard :)

I think you will find cardistry comes into place for you, but it will take a whole new set of muscle memories.

Start at the very beginning with one hand cuts - as they get more complex they add the various grips and motions that will get you going.

Practicing tricky moves like having one card fly from the deck to the other hand are really less tricky than they seem - but you have to drop a ton of cards and keep at it to get the knack.

I favor my left hand (off hand) for single hand cuts as my focus is magic and thats where I need it - and its at the obvious expense of my right hand not being able to do what my left can, and vice versa - if you wan’t to be a cardist be sure to give both hands equal time

For easy two hand flourish, Sybil cut is a nice one, lots of variations out there…

I've got one out right now, and I posted it in the New Decks forum. You can find it under Unfortunately, I'm skeptical that it will reach its goal. I jumped the gun on the release with some poor pictures and the introduction of the story wasn't nearly tight enough. I still really like the card back, but everything else may have to be reworked. I'm still going to do whatever I can to help the deck meet its goal because I feel a responsibility to the backers. And if it fails, I'll have to learn what I can from the failure and just do a better job next time.

Welcome to the madhouse.
You want to reclaim your mind and get it out of the hands of the cultural engineers who want to turn you into a half-baked moron consuming all this trash that’s being manufactured out of the bones of a dying world.

I prefer to not learn from failure. Just ask my kids!
