If you are going to purchase the decks, get one of the LeChat coins. They are on sale for $5 as well.

Part of Lorenzo's Patreon package this year was a red gilded Black17 deck :D It was signed and sealed on the cello though!! I managed to peel the label off the cello and put it on the tuck in the same spot (middle of the back) but I'll have to wait to bump into Lorenzo in person someday to get this re-signed

Has the world has gone mad
A $64 KS deck goes for $790 eight years later

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/re ... s?ref=card

It was only a run of 143 and compared to the inflation on early Orbits that had runs of 2,500 - you could say the Red Label Limited cats are a bargain

I do however think that completionists are a dream for resellers

You seemed surprised. Have you not seen rare Lorenzo decks on eBay or otherwise?

What about crown selling for almost $2,000 back on SoCal.

Not really surprised (the opening bid was set at $500) just thinking how ridiculous / mad the world is
After all the cards are exactly the same as the standard deck that you could get on KS for $13
The laser cut sleeve is something my wife could produce on her Cricut nowadays
And although I love Lorenzo's work, is his autograph really worth anything
When they were 5x's the Standard Early Bird price, that was a fair whack
At 60x's = people out of control

The point isn't that you could produce the same deck for cheaper, the point is THAT SPEICIFIC deck was already produced in low quantities and over time became highly desirable due to it being rare, due to S17 becoming so popular, etc. People who weren't either collecting or didn't know who Lorenzo was when that deck was released now want a piece of history.

It's like saying why is a 1stt edition charizard worth like $300k, when every other foil pokemon card is also a piece of paper with some artwork and foiling on it, but those cards are worth $30. That's the entire point of collecting. It's about rare items that are in demand due to them being rare or because of the designer, or because of the item's history or whatever.

What makes a stamp from 80 years ago worth millions when any other piece of paper from 80 years ago ISN'T worth millions. That's ALL collecting, not just playing cards.

Bdawg is right on it. While this might not make sense for you, for someone who is trying to complete a S17 collection it does. It is no different than paying for a rare book, baseball card, jersey etc. A lot of people just collect cards and don't use them for play. Hence, the pricing for rare decks for super popular designers.

I bought one of those decks for £100 about five years ago and then sold it for £125 about a month later; it was my intention to keep it, but the other collector, a friend, was really keen to own it.

He is arguably the most popular playing card designer along with JR, so it makes sense that his limited decks, even if they're tuck swaps, could fetch good money.

I'm surprised you're reacting so strongly to this instance, Honeybee. We've seen plenty of examples of this.

I agree, I am not shocked by this price at all. I would not pay that amount but that does not mean someone else may feel that is is "worth it".

Keep in mind that some folks are reselling a deck they got on the after-market. I bought my only example in the aftermarket years ago. I think mine cost like $170, which was the standard going rate in the market back then. When you consider the prices of a Heretic Noctis and Lux "standard" version, this doesn't seem crazy at all. Many of his older decks are just really expensive.

I didn't mean to come across as reacting strongly.
'Calmly' ;) I just think it is a little crazy (only a little)
I knew I was being a little controversial when I posted it
bdawg has nearly convinced me - I would be totally convinced if it was 80yrs old and custom card collecting had the following that stamps or art have (then we would be adding at least one zero on the end)
Don't worry, I have the crazy bug/gene too - a video of my home would make that VERY clear
I have been a collector of things longer than most people on here because I AM OLD lol - maybe I am getting a little stingy in my old age

The process of collecting goes like this: you buy a nice deck of cards, and then you want to collect all the editions, and then you want to collect all the weird editions, like signatures, prototypes, and then you follow the author, and then you want to collect all the cards of the author until you go bankrupt 8-) . In general, the further down the road, the more willing they are to pay for those old, rare editions, and famous and powerful authors are more likely to attract such collectors, and the competition between each other makes the price rise rapidly.

Honeybee, to be completely honest, I wouldn't pay $790 for the No.17 Le Chat Rouge Red Label even if I didn't have it. I think that is a completely crazy price for me. That said, some folks are paying it. Not ready to sell mine either even for that price.

Don't Worthpoint even have a Playing Cards category?

There's no specific playing cards category, but nearly all listings of playing cards have "playing cards" in the name. You're better off searching across all categories.

We all wish. It would make searching a lot easier. It's usually in "Books, papers, & magazines" on Worthpoint... but not always. As Kevork recommended, it's best to search all categories.
