Barrister Cabinets are the way to go. Nice glass doors show off the collection just perfectly. And if you are overly anal, you could provide environmental controls for long term preservation (assuming you are not going to sell off the decks in the near-future). NOw if I were stupid wealthy, I would line my study with this setup. Would anybody like to donate so that I can realize my dream? I figure that I only need about $2.5 million.

I have a friend with a world-class collection who had a setup much like you describe, and it caused thousands of dollars in damage to many of her favorite decks via light hitting the cards and causing the cards displayed to be noticeably faded when compared to the other cards in the deck.

Library glass has a tint applied to the inside to reduce damaging UV rays from incoming light. That and not letting copious amounts of light in in the first place help reduce long term damage.

Yes, that was what I was getting at. I believe you can also purchase sheets of UV-filtering film which can be applied to any glass.

And, part of "not letting copious amounts of light in" is to discourage or disallow flash photography of the displays.

True, i don't see an area that is an exact match for this topic. I'd say "Knowledge Base", perhaps, but that's locked. The other alternative would be "General" which basically is totally random.

Just seems like a discussion of boxes doesn't fall under "Find out about the latest and greatest playing cards hitting the market" (the subtitle for "New & Custom Decks").

But since this topic has been going for over 6 months without any other complaints, i guess i'll shut up now...

No need to shut up, it was a perfectly legitimate question.

I've only been on UC for less than a year now, but I know that when I first got here and looked around, I was less than impressed with the list of sub-forums.

Part of that was simply a case of "That's not how I would have done it", but I chalked it up to my being a collector, not a cardist/flourisher (not that there's anything wrong with that...). Plus, I knew that subforums sometimes get created via an organic process, and so may not make sense to someone coming later, and who is not privy to the circumstances which led to the creating of the subforums.

Hi!

I'm very new to the collecting world so my stash is a little measly compared to anyone else's. But upon stumbling into Kickstarter and helping fund many other decks, and then joining Club 808 after going into a frenzy on Ebay and Amazon, storage will be a concern soon! Thanks to everyone for those suggestions!

Here's a snapshot of my small collection so you can poke fun at it. They're on a tray I bought at Staples. The lock box to the right are vintage pin-up decks from the 40s,50s and 60s and a few more modern ones...can't exactly post pics of those if you know what I mean.

Rummaging through my garage I stumble into an old art box so I decided to repurpose it. After stripping it and removing the trays, I went to the craft store, bought some burgundy felt, leather straps and this was the result.

Yo-ehn. It's pronounced similar to Owen. But a lot of friends pronounce it "eh-oh-ghan" or "ee-og" for short coz they can't get around all the silent letters.

Yes that's right. Mainly Irish/Gaelic. Though its been know to surface in Scottish and Welsh lands.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by that. Would you care to elaborate please? Like the felt staining the tucks? So far I've been very careful and made sure that most of my decks maintain their plastic sleeves. I also made sure the straps aren't tight enough to flatten the decks from the sides. Don't know if I'm missing an important step in caring for my decks.

Yes. I am far from an expert on such matters, but I know that the dyes used to color some cloths/papers will transfer over to objects that touch them for long periods of time. I once saw a nearly priceless collection of old playing cards which had become nearly worthless because the collector had mounted individual cards from the decks into old-fashioned photo albums (the kind where the pages are made from construction paper, and the photos are attached to the pages via "corner mounts").

The construction paper which made up the pages was a chocolate brown color. The cards mounted on the pages had been permanently stained that brown from decades of being in the albums.

I know that there are certain types of paper which I believe are referred to as "museum-quality" which are specifically made so that their dyes will NOT transfer/bleed on to other objects in contact with them. I don't know if there are any equivalent "museum-quality" felts or leathers.

Keeping the tux boxes in their cellophane would obviously help.

I just remembered: The term for the non-bleeding kind of paper is not "museum-quality" paper, but "archive-quality" paper or archival paper.

Googling THAT led me to the following Wikipedia page on "Acid-free paper":

The felt I've used is Ruby Eco Fi felt bought at Michael's craft store. I've sent an email to Eco Fi asking for specs and especially if its acid free before I tear the felt off the box!

In the meantime I carefully removed the cellophane off cheap, common decks and placed them on the more limited decks, just to be safe.
