Can you elaborate a bit on your information regarding the intersection of Nihon Karuta and Tohoku Karuta? I have found it difficult to find information on the timelines on which these companies faded away, but it had been my impression that Tohoku Karuta ceased their own direct production of cards earlier than Nihon Karuta, and moved on to sourcing cards from Tamura Shogundo once Nihon Karuta had gone out of business. I have no certain information regarding this timeline, however, and would be quite interested to know more.

Tohoku date info is pretty scarce


Nihon Karuta seems to have been founded in 1915, as this is when its earliest trademark registrations appear. Other records show that it existed in 1916, 1948 and through to at least the early 1980s

Tōhoku was a manufacturer based in the city of Tendō, Yamagata prefecture (山形県天童市 ). They originally appear to have been a manufacturer (including for Seieidō), but later outsourced production to Tamura Shōgundō. The company seems to still exist in some form as Tendon Shogi (appears also closed now)

I think these arrived today, but the girl I asked to open the parcel for me was being so bloody violent with the scissors opening the parcel I left the final of bubblewrap on and said that I'd open it tomorrow. She was like Freddy Krueger.

I would disagree - I have all sorts (pretty literally) and this is a nishiki-like style that I appreciate quite a bit.

Almost forgot this one from Amazon a few days back - I like the colors a bunch - don’t get all of these decks, as so many are standard other than the jokers - but a decent color scheme is all it takes sometimes… In this case the art is also non-standard and has a nice old style

The company that prints these makes a nice quality card - when you see that marking on the top of the box, its better than most, and often cheaper

I am working my way through - talked to the artist, who only has a single deck she will not part with, threw me the name of a person on (heading?) the team that made them who had more access to copies. Eagerly awaiting reply/next clue…

Haha, I contacted her, too, plus the guy who posted the artwork on Dribble. There's also some people selling their poker deck, and t-shirts on eBay, so I thought I'd ask them.
