The "Hey, look what I added to my collection!" thread
Re: The "Hey, look what I added to my collection!" thread
Wow - lucky gal. I have to beg my wife to let me buy a deck here and there... but... she lets me. I think she just likes to hear me beg.
Just got my decks from D&D today. They were delivered more quickly than I thought. I'm a bit surprised that the Ultimate Deck wasn't in cellophane. Fortunately, the tuck box wasn't marred.

Lucky gal indeed!ejronin wrote:Wow - lucky gal. I have to beg my wife to let me buy a deck here and there... but... she lets me. I think she just likes to hear me beg.
My wife is, apparently like ejronin's, less than fond of my spending money on "more of those stupid playing cards".
She still buys me the occasional deck she happens upon (as did my former wife), but neither of them ever purchased me a haul like that which the Lucky Gal's husband got her on eBay.
Here's hoping he got...something HE enjoys just as much... in appreciation.

Yep, definitely lucky. Neither of us usually has to beg the other for anything, as long as it's in our budget lol. And those are some nice decks, but it is odd that the Ultimate deck wouldn't have cello. The beige deck in the middle looks nice too, haven't seen it before. I really need to stop coming on this forum. I see way too many things I want to get.ejronin wrote:Wow - lucky gal. I have to beg my wife to let me buy a deck here and there... but... she lets me. Hah, well my collection is nowhere close to the size of yours, so by the time I catch up, he might be saying 'stupid playing cards' too. And he does get something he wants, a very happy wife. Happy wife = happy life right? Seriously though, I am always on the lookout for fun stuff to surprise him with, but his toys usually cost far more than mine (camera lenses are insane! )RSLancastr wrote: Lucky gal indeed!

I just read the last few posts in this thread - starting with yours about your "haul" - aloud to my wife.charlie81dbz wrote:Hah, well my collection is nowhere close to the size of yours, so by the time I catch up, he might be saying 'stupid playing cards' too. She said that what your husband did for you sounded like the kind of things I do for her.
In fact, here is something kinda similar that I did for her last year:
First, you need to understand that she is a Christian, and I am not. In fact, I am an Agnostic (I don't claim to know whether or not there is a God).
She had mentioned to me that she had always wanted to read the entire Bible, but that the times she had tried, she "burned out" just a couple oh hundred pages in. She wanted to find some structured approach to reading the whole thing, rather than the "read until your eyes won't stay open" approach she had tried in the past.
Not long after that conversation, we were at church one morning (yes, we attend church together - long story) when I noticed a woman reading a book titled "The Bible In 90 Days (Cover to cover in twelve pages each day)"
I pointed the book out to my wife, and we discussed it with the woman, who highly recommended it.
When we got home that afternoon, I got on eBay and purchased two copies of that book, along with a companion "study guide".
The books showed up a week or two later, and I presented them to my wife, who was very surprised (I had not even told her that I had looked for them, much less had found and purchased them). When she asked why I had bought TWO copies, she was even more surprised when I told her that I had figured we could read it together - a sort of joint project.
We picked a date to start, and, for the 90 days after that date, we spent about 60-75 minutes every evening reading the Bible aloud together. I read the odd-numbered pages aloud, and she read the even-numbered ones aloud.
Ninety days later, we had read all 1,000+ pages together, from Genesis to Revalation!
So, yours is not the only husband who purchases things on eBay all sneaky-like for his wife!

That is a great story RSLancastr.
And I choose this topic to say hello and introduce myself, Hello I am Charlie81dbz's hubby 0/
Perhaps I can hide the next haul as well. >.> <.<
Anyone know of any "high class" custom card resellers in Vegas? There has to be some.

The first time I hit Vegas after starting my collection, I was sadly disappointed at the lack of custom decks at the casinos!Anyone know of any "high class" custom card resellers in Vegas? There has to be some.
I had envisioned each casino having a custom deck with courts matching the casino's "theme" (Treasure Island would have pirates on the courts, Excalibur would have King Arthur's court, and so on...)
As it turns out, gamblers want their decks to be as standard as possible, so all of the casinos had totally standard decks!
Well, almost all of them.
The Flamingo has decks where the courts have flamingo faces.
Caesar's Palace has decks with Caesar, Cleopatra and so on on the courts.
And that's about it.
Oh, and the M&M World store has decks with the M&M guys on the courts!

Re: The "Hey, look what I added to my collection!" thread
Added a few decks this past week and I thought I'd throw in two that I had tucked away as well. One a promotional item for the movie, "Smokin' Aces" The suits each have a picture of one of the main characters on the back, this serves as the court characters as well. The tan pack is from the game Fable 3. Unfortunately the pic I took of the court cards came out too blurry, I will scan them in later when I get a chance. Each of the court cards are unique and IMO very nicely illustrated. Quality of the cards themselves isn't all that, but I dig the artwork which is mainly why I collect.
Finally, the Emily the Strange cards are from my local comicbook shop. Again, quality isn't all that nice, but the artwork is freaking awesome.

That is such a sweet thing to do! And that is definitely a very challenging book to read, it's been on my to-do list for a long time now. :\RSLancastr wrote: When we got home that afternoon, I got on eBay and purchased two copies of that book, along with a companion "study guide".

Wow, I really like that EtS deck, the courts really do look awesome. A bit on the morbid side, but I wouldn't mind having that one for myself.chach wrote:Finally, the Emily the Strange cards are from my local comicbook shop. Again, quality isn't all that nice, but the artwork is freaking awesome.

[SoapBox]
By the way, something cannot be "red gilded". "gilded" (or "gilt") means "gold-colored", so "red gilded" would mean "red gold-colored".
similarly impossible, I have seen people describe silver-edged decks as "silver gilded".
I think that "silver edged" - or, in the Emily deck's case, "red edged" - would be the correct term.
[/SoapBox]
Again, thanks though.
I don't know that I've ever seen a deck with edges colored other than gold or silver before.

Re: The "Hey, look what I added to my collection!" thread
Framegod (or any other owners of the EtS deck): Have you handled the cards in terms of cardistry? Do they handle like any other gilded (or silvered or whatever) decks?
Re: The "Hey, look what I added to my collection!" thread
No for cardisrty these cards are not made for that, they are thicker than normal and colored edges may be the cause of more problems cardisrty type work. If you work them enough you may be able to simple magic tricks ( deck is one way), but I have not worked mine enough to try any. I can do a dribble with them and one handed cuts, but that's just me some else may have been able to do more.MagikFingerz wrote:Framegod (or any other owners of the EtS deck): Have you handled the cards in terms of cardistry? The facts:
they are thicker than normal
they have to be separated because of the colored edges
they are made in china
Thank you,

Re: The "Hey, look what I added to my collection!" thread
I've never so much as even shuffled any of the decks in my collection (shudder), but I can well imagine how a color-edged deck might be a headache for a cardist/flourisher. I've had gilded decks which were so stuck together out of the box that they were like a solid brick, and I had to flex the deck (resulting in a crackling sound) to seperate the cards so that I could even see the faces! fanning/flourishing such a deck must be a nightmare!

Re: The "Hey, look what I added to my collection!" thread
When I opened my EtS deck even after bending them a bit to break the red ink apart a bit I still had to go card by card as 1 or 2 were still stuck together. They're definitely not made for manipulation but more for looking at IMO.RSLancastr wrote:framegod wrote:

How odd that something which most mere collectors of decks (such as myself) think of as highly desirable, the cardist community apparently really dislikes.

I don't think anyone stated that they disliked them. I'm planning on buying at least one, I just thought I'd ask how they are compared to other gilded decks. I'm a collector who plays cards and admires not only how they look, but how they handle. Which gilding destroys. Besides, I'm not a big fan of it in general. Too ostentatious and ultimately pointless. Though I'm sure there will be a deck at some point that disproves this.

They came with the Limited Edition of Fable 3, an Xbox 360 game. You can probably find a copy on Ebay nowadays but it's long been out of print. Came in a large case that resembled a book, open the cover and the game is inside, open a false bottom and slide out a small portion where the cards were hidden along with a coin.

There are several for sale on eBay, but unfortunately for me, most, if not all of them come with the game, which jacks the price way up and I don't have an XBox 360 anyway.
