Playing Cards Storage Boxes (big)

I have certainly considered buying a few of bmpokerworld's acrylic displays, but have held off for a few reasons:

1. The cost (not unreasonable, just outside my current means is all).

2. I dunno how our apartment management would like all of the holes we would have to drill into our walls to hang the number of these I would want/need.

3. It seems like it would be a lot of trouble to get an individual deck back out of it when needed (particularly given my disability).

4. Speaking of which, I don't know that I could actually mount these on a wall from my wheelchair.

5. Many of my decks are of odd sizes which would not work with this display.

6. I fear that having my decks out on display would result in far more cries of "Do you really need all of these things?!?" from my wife.

The decks can be removed or added quite easily and the display holds all standard size and bridge size decks.

While smaller-than-standard/poker-sized decks would fit, I do not think that they would look "right", likely ending up off-center and such.

A good portion of my collection consists of larger-sized decks and, especially, double-deck sets which come in boxes too large for your display. Also, many old/antique decks are of odd sizs, as they were printed before the sizes became standardized. Also also, many older decks, even poker-sized ones, came in bigger boxes than today's decks do (such as thick slipcases), some of which would not fit in your displays.

So, while your displays look to be spot-on for most collections of modern decks, they are not so perfect for other, older & more varied collections.

I'm very happy with my ikea bookcases with angled shelves. Each shelf displays 33 decks, adding 2 extra shelves gives 6 shelves per case excluding the middle and bottom one (which are good for box displays and misc piles respectively).

This is an old photo btw, I now have 2 big ones and have started putting the decks in 2 layers on some of the shelves. Might take some new pics when I get home for christmas.

That's good to know. Perhaps an indication of that (such as a short video) would be a good selling point.

I've got a place in the Seattle area that sells sports cards and Magic decks as well... they sell me those boxes for $4.50/each and they'll even assemble them in the store if you ask them nicely. I've picked up 6 of them. They hold approximately 120 decks each.

Either you (and the people whose pics were posted above) have skinny decks (I said decks, people!!) or I lack some Mad Packing Skillz, because I only got around 80 Bike decks into each of the ones I filled yesterday. Did you use WD40 and a spatula or something?

There's 25 decks in the first column, 24 in the next, so right around 120-125 decks per box depending on the decks... (yeah, some are much thicker than others - i.e. BBM - Death Heads plastic edition)

What I wouldn't give to obtain some of the decks in your collection... I see a White Centurion and all 3 Card Shark decks (I rarely find those online, and they are always used or missing tuckbox).

I still don't understand how others, in pics earlier in this thread, got far more decks to fit in this type of box.

I thought that the 5-row boxes just had one more row than the 4-row ones. But, now that you mention it, the 5-row ones must be longer, or the would only hold 4,000 cards (3,200 cards / 4 rows = 800 cards per row * 5 rows = 4,000 cards.

So, for five rows to hold 5,000 cards, that would mean 1,000 cards per row, vs. the 4-row boxes' 800 cards per row.

That additional 200 cards per row is roughly 4 more decks per row - still not the 30 decks-per-row in some of the pics, but substantial.

Actually, most of the pics have about 23-25 per row which would be right on the number you calculated. Because there are 5 rows, that would give an extra 25 on top of your 4 row box.


So I think the math looks a little like this.

5 row box - 5 * 24 = 120 decks

4 row box - 4 * 20 = 80 decks


Back on topic, I've been looking all over my area to find these at a reasonable price. Card/Comic shop have almost gone the way of the dinosaur here.... I may resort to buying them while on vacation in the continental U.S.

Yeah, I think the sports/tradingcard places peaked in popularity when Magic The Gathering was big - around 2000 or so. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle cards, Yu-Gi-Oh! and other such series were also still popular. Now, not so much.

I was in Toys R Us recently and the Collectible Cards section was miniscule compared to their Glory Days. A few Yu-Gi-Oh! packs, Power Ranger packs, and not much else.

Boy, I wish I still had the Beatles cards, Monkees cards, Man From U.N.C.L.E. cards and Rowan & Martin's Laugh-in cards from my youth!

Hi, Fairly new to collecting - started out as casual poker player and stumbled accross 4PM's Grid Deck. Loved 'em. Had to have 'em. (That was the start of a slippery slope!)

Anyway, storage has quickly become an issue - after 20 decks scrounging tupperware just wont do!

I picked this up recently on ebay. It's designed for MTG type cards but comfortably fits standard tuck boxes - 36 deck capacity give or take.
Build quality is good I was a little concerned about the metal clips that hold the middle separator in place marking tuck boxes, but the case comes with foam strips which improve the fit of the boxes and protect acanst scratches. Also comes with funky plastic separators.
It's a UK seller so perhaps better for european collectors in terms of shipping?

Welcome montecarlojoe.
Really like the look of those 'metal' cases, and I pick them up second hand whenever I can. Didn't know they were made for trading cards. They are sturdy and always lined with flocked material so the decks are well protected. So far I haven't found any with the separator in them - I wonder if they can be bought separately.

Not my kind of thing but many of my favourite decks are novelties, or are otherwise outside of the bike and cardistry universe. I just posted a vintage one I found recently to The "Hey, look what I added to my collection!" thread.

Back to posts about storage boxes.
I mostly use Helmer drawer units from Ikea. One of my Helmers currently has about 225 decks in it, catagorized in 6 diff drawers according to type and source, but it is not at capacity yet. It could hold maybe another 75 decks but since I look at them frequently I prefer to not have them jammed in tight. I posted pics of them to the "Post pics of your playing card collection" thread back in December.

As far as preferences go I would love to have something more like an old wooden index card cabinet. Finding that would take luck and/or money. I think one of the other members had posted something like that a while back but it may have been at one of the older UC incarnations.
