Boxing

Unread post by walrus »

Figured I would run this one up the flagpole and see if anyone gives it a salute.

I love boxing. We do have some great fighters at the moment Pacquia (I do not care what anybody says, Bradley did not beat him,) Mayweather probably one of the best defensive boxers of all time and a handful of others. I do beleive Canelo Alvarez will be, if he is not know, the best pound for pound. Although Josisito Lopez posed little threat to Canelo in the ring two weeks ago, Canelo showed his overwhelming power by putting him down three times with body shots. Alright, just wanted to get that out.

Bane, you prove yourself a worthy foe. Granted, I shall prevail as the light always overcomes the darkness. I would love to post a photo of myself to rival you but I can not fit my manbreasts in the frame.

I will not put down the athletic prowess of the UFC fighters or any of their capabilities.
But it is not comparable to boxing.
The aspect of boxing that is missing in UFC is the strategy, the ring generalship as it were.
Something you will not see in UFC (except for the chance of a lucky blow) is the physically out matched fighter winning over the stronger faster fighter.
Because of the rules that exist in boxing (UFC has none to speak of) a fighter who is weaker and perhaps even a bit slower can win a fight by being smarter.

I am not a fan of Mayweather, but I will admit he is an amazing fighter and I have never missed one of his fights (always hoping he will lose). The reason he is undefeated is not only because of his amazing shape but because he is probably one of the smartest (and dirtiest) fighters out there. Many fighters you will see change there strategy half way through a fight, maybe between rounds. Mayweather changes his strategy his plans between punches. The only one better at it than Mayweather is Pacquiao who changes strategys sometimes mid punch.

Mr. Foolishness
I am the same way as you. I watch Mayweather with the desire to see him lose. It is suspect the way he chooses opponents. He seems to avoid Pacquia for stupid reasons (made up). Still, it is impressive to see his defense. It is hard to lose when you prevent opponents from scoring on you. I think that is Canellos weakness at this time. He can be hit.
At this time I think we need to just humour Bane as he is misguided.

Walrus wanted me to update his Boxing thread, but there was 2, so I didn't know which one to update. SO here goes....

The first thing you may notice watching Mikey Garcia fight is that he is calm. He is calmer than the fans, and his corner, and, always, calmer than his opponent. He has no reason not to be. So far, patience has never failed him.

And I like that about him. Calm is cool.

At the age of 25, Garcia’s record stands at 31-0 with 26 knockouts. He is a case study in how to properly manage a young fighter’s career. (And he should be, given the fact that his brother, Robert Garcia, is one of the world’s best trainers IMO) Garcia has been brought along slowly. He has not taken too much punishment. His level of competition has increased gradually and steadily; and now, in his physical prime, he gets his 1st real world class fight, against the somewhat battered but still dangerous killing machine Juan Manuel Lopez.

Lopez is a prime example of a career that was not properly managed. Just 2 years ago, he was undefeated, and, along with Yuriorkis Gamboa, one of the two most hyped fighters in the lightweight division (IMO). So well hyped, in fact, that his managers thought it was a good idea to squeeze a few more stepping stone fights out of him before making the big match with Gamboa that the world wanted to see. But as often happens in boxing, the script was derailed by a determined underdog; Lopez found himself TKO’d by the hard-headed veteran Orlando Salido. What could have been a minor setback turned into existential disaster for Lopez’s career when he was TKO’d once again by Salido in a rematch last year. Now, "JuanMa" -- who was oh-so-recently mentioned as one of the most exciting and dangerous fighters in the world -- finds himself with one last chance to salvage his reputation as a true A-level boxer. His fight against Garcia is a real shot at redemption. It might be his last shot, before he is shuffled off into the dreaded category of “tough opponent,” rather than “world-class contender.”

So then, we have the classic Young Contender on the Rise vs. Veteran Desperate to Prove He’s Still Got It.

But that’s reductive to a fault. Until now, Mikey Garcia has only fought in mismatches. This fight is not a mismatch. That means that anything can happen. The betting public will take note of the fact that Orlando Salido beat Lopez twice, but was thoroughly battered and defeated by Garcia in January. And indeed, Garcia will be the favorite in this fight. But it’s useful to remember that past performance is not always a reliable guide when a young fighter gets his first real taste of top-level competition. Especially -- as Lopez will provide -- top level power.

This has been Magic Orthodoxy on boxing, stay tuned next week for more.

Very good orthopoo. You actually made me think about Salido. I haven't seen him in a while. He is a scary fighter. Just keeps attacking. I hope to see Garcia fight Mattysse but it is a fight Garcia probably wants to avoid. You are right, the next fight or so will determine if Garcia is the real deal. After all, it was his fight with Amir Khan that put him over the top and as we both know Amir has no chin. I will give you an Aplus for your boxing update and something tells me you don't follow boxing and that makes it even more impressive. Sorry about ignoring you that night, I just really wanted a cold one and let's face it, you have been letting yourself go over the past few years.

This Friday night on ESPN2, undefeated prospect Juan Carlos Payano takes on Filipino Jundy Maraon on the latest installment of “Friday Night Fights” from West Orange, New Jersey. Payano, 29-years old, is a 2-time Olympian (2004 & 2008) from the Dominican Republic with a record of 13-0 (7 KO’s) and a boxrec.com rating of #42. He is a quick-handed southpaw with good power (like a faster version of Juan Manuel Lopez), and he throws combinations effectively upstairs and down. In this fight Payano faces untested Jundy Maraon, a 28-year old with a record of 15-0-1 (12 KO’s) and a boxrec.com rating of #245. Maraon is a mobile southpaw with an excellent straight left hand, and he works at a decent rate, but he tends to rely on the left too much, and he has only fought outside of the Philippines once (a 3rd round TKO over 9-11-2 Ernie Marquez back in September of last year).

Despite the disparity between these two in terms of rankings, this has the makings of an interesting fight. Maraon, based on clips I have seen, is an active, aggressive fighter with good power who certainly looks better than his #245 rating would indicate. While I ultimately think Payano is the quicker, more dynamic puncher, I think Maraon is capable of making this a competitive fight by managing the distance and not getting caught in “no man’s land.” However, in the end, I think Payano will dictate the pace, he will land the harder shots, and he will utilize his vast amateur experience to come away with a clear, but competitive win.

Very nice orthopoo. I don't really watch the espn fights but I should. Since I was away last weekend I missed the Lopez fight. I still haven't been able to watch the replay.

Tonight, Mike Garcia and Juan Manuel Marquez are fighting. Marquez is the one who knocked out Manny so I am wanting to see him beat. Next week we have a great fight but this is not next weekend

Hey, I completely screwed up who was on the cards for Sat. Fight. My apologies. I have been traveling and unable to follow boxing as I usually do so it was an inaccurate post.

We have a big Casino here in CT. On the 29th of this month I will be going to see the Golovkin fight in said casino. I will try to bring in my Kindle so I can give you live updates. It should be a good fight. Golovkin is fighting Macklin. I will probably put a few bucks on Mac although it will be a tough fight for him. Oddly enough my mother sent me the tickets as a gift. Should be a good night. At least two undercard and the matches will be aired live on HBO. Tyson often shows up at these events, I was thinking of going early and see who is signing autographs. By the way, this weekend Malanaggi is fighting Broner. We will have a lot to talk about if Broner loses, please Lord let Broner lose.

Orthopoo, nice picture, who is who.

I am having a discussion at the boxing forum about Broner being able to back Paulie up at will but Broner did not let his hands go while he did so. Granted, Broner won 8-4 but he wasted many opportunities. I will keep you all informed.

Alright guys, tonight I am going to the Macklin v Golovkin fight. Golovkin is the heavy favorite but I am willing to wager on Macklin. I will put a DECK of Blue Bloods on Macklin. If anyone chooses to wager with me you are going to have to put up a couple of nice decks as Golovkin is the 7-1 favorite. If anyone feels like wagering let me know. I have always paid up any of my wagers.

Hello, I have to admit Mike Tyson did have a great jab. I never thought he did. I must correct myself and put him back on the list of the top five or ten greatest heavyweights. This list is topped by Joe Louis.

Really? How can Macklin win this fight? He's not going to outbox Golovkin.... right? So, his one and only shot is to get into a toe-2-toe, bombs-away type of war, and get the stoppage in a fight where either man could be going down at any second.

That "might" happen.

But, I don't think it will.

My guess is Golovkin proves to be on another level, and may even dominate Macklin en route to the stoppage, though the early rounds may "look" competitive. But I will gladly take your money

Hey orthopoo as you know I was at the Golovkin v Macklin fight. I can tell you Macs only chance was to out box Golovkin. golovkin hit make so hard in the third round round he was not only down for ten but couldn't get up for a couple more minutes. I was sitting 18 rows back and I felt the impact
