Pelted Primacy Playing Card Deck Now live on Kickstarter
Pelted Primacy Playing Card Deck Now live on Kickstarter
Hey guys,
I am back again for an attempt to get my designs out there printed by the USPCC. Pelted Primacy, if anyone remembers, was an unsuccessful project on Kickstarter a while back that uses furry-based illustrations on the court cards in an interesting way, as well as a full-art joker set, new pip designs, and a solid art scheme across the cards. I, the creator of the project, am here to display my changes to the project, being updated and soon to be reopened on Kickstarter once again. Here's the link to the project preview:
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/djk ... n=25c71590
Here are some major changes to the project from before:
-The back has been completely redone, and the illustration of the Joker card will be modified for the back as an additional illustration.
-The court cards will be adjusted in format and layout to allow for full-art, but in a two-direction style.
-The pips and indices have been reduced in size and pushed to the margins of the cards, making poker, blackjack, and Texas hold'em playable with this deck.
-Court card designs will now have art being drawn for others who back the project. Those without their own furry characters for the court positions they request will have me working with them directly to produce characters unique to their specifications that work for the court card they requested.
-Similar to the court cards, the Joker will also have an option to become somebody else's character (more closely to the actual situation, their character will become the Joker of the deck) which will be included in the Tuck box design, the back of the card, and on at least two cards in the deck.
-The pips have been changed from simply just dog paw patterns to patterns of different species, depending on the suit. Hearts will be felines, spades will be canines, clubs will be ursines (bears) and diamonds will be foxes (vulpines)
-The aces in the deck will no longer be court-style, but large representations of the new pip designs (much more traditional format for the aces, with the ace of spades larger and more defined)
Here are some examples of the art being used in the project:
So, let me know what you think about it this time around! It is in the processing stage on Kickstarter, so hopefully it will be up in time for when I go to Anthrocon next week, and hand out some info business cards (mostly related to my online works).
Thanks for any feedback!!

Re: Pelted Primacy Playing Card Deck (New everything!)
A couple (hopefully constructive) comments for you. The new pips are pretty cool, I like how you integrated the suit shape. YOu do need to look at adjusting sizes though, as in your mockup of the 5 of hearts your corner index is ridiculously close to the main pips on the card. Definitely have to give things breathing room.
The back is very detailed and pretty visually interesting, but I struggle to see how it relates to the theme of the "furry" thing. You do have the pawprint in the corners there, but the rest is pretty standard these days. We see tons and tons of decks that utilize those flowery, victorian-ey curls. There are so many decks with that type that it's almost generic now and doesn't really speak to your theme. The 5 center elements are a little bit of a clash with the rest, as they are much bolder and more geometric than all the other elements. They kind of stick out a bit to my eye.
Since your court figures are very "cartoon" style I'd think carefully about how the back relates, as the whole deck needs to be a cohesive piece.

I agree with everything Paul (Encarded) said. Symmetry and consistency are two important key words when designing a deck.

More on what everyone else just said, I like the back- a lot. But it definitely doesn't go with the theme of the rest of the deck. And negative space is just as important- Paul's right, less is more.
Does the court card remind anyone else of King from Tekken? Hahaha fun game...

Re: Pelted Primacy Playing Card Deck Now live on Kickstarter
Hey guys, thanks a ton for the replies! I am starting to see why the back would be nice but not fit well with the rest of the deck's feel. So with that in mind, I might make some tweaks to the design of the back. Also, I plan on shrinking the numbered card pips just a tad on each of the cards 2-10, so the pips won't be nearly as close to the outer pips and indices. The redesign should take all of twenty minutes for all four suits.
Keep those opinions coming!

Final Stretch for Pelted Primacy Playing Card Deck
FINAL STRETCH OF THE PROJECT:
Here are updates to the project images:
(The back design is just an example of how the new back will look, with the new Joker card's secondary illustrations)
Please let me know what you think, because this will be the last time this project stays on Kickstarter. I want to move on to new illustration projects and be able to expand my portfolio, and this unfortunately took too much time to spread the word on, and to somewhat unsuccessful results..
