fatboy playing cards by fatboyeatallday
Hey guys,
Here's a "new" deck of cards that might be appealing to some of you:
The fatboy deck is a very nice discovery and surprise for us, here are a few things that I can share with you guys.
fatboyeatallday is a Hong Kong street fashion brand/online store, they use a lot of triangle elements within their designs.
This deck is not designed by or for magicians, hence there are only 54 cards in the deck and one red, one black joker.
My first impression of the back design is that it looks like the Virts deck and Jerry's Nugget a lot, however, according to the designer, the color combination was inspired by his favourite softdrink: Pepsi
I tried the deck myself and here is what I think about the hand feel and paper stock of this deck:
The paper stock is quite hard and very snappy, you can expect this deck to be a very durable deck.
The cards are "locked", so they are pretty good for both card flourishes and card magic moves,
They only customized Jokers and Ace of Spades, other cards are pretty standard looking.
You need to use a specific way to do faro shuffle with this deck: hold the deck face down and start from bottom of the packet
We have reached an agreement of making all the remaining fatboy decks exclusively available at Coterie, however, there are only a little less than 1000 decks still in stock anyway. We are indeed giving a bit of priority to local collectors, however, we will make at least 600 decks available on Coterie.
While we can't do much about international shipping, the deck themselves will not be marketed as a rare deck, so that's probably a good news to many.
Cheers,
Zenneth

Looks like a poor man's Virts deck to me. And non-USPCC is always risky.
Zenneth, is the stock/finish comparable to any other decks (e.g. Moth/Myth)?

Hi Walrus, walrus wrote:I know Zennith has put out some nice cards but these are, IMO, the nicest I have seen.
I kind of wish it was me who designed this deck, but it's not, in fact, I think it's too much similar to Virts deck and Jerry's Nugget. Though I must say, the card back is indeed very eye catching and refreshing, I feel
this deck is born to be a deck of cards for cardistry.

Yup, the fatboy deck indeed looks like Virts and Jerry's Nugget, that's also why it caught my eyes immediately when I first saw it. I feel the coincidence in design is probably not a good thing had they were produced by designers that are familiar with the playing cards community, which is also the same reason why I didn't mention the idea of getting the same design produced by USPCC to fatboy management.MagikFingerz wrote:Looks like a poor man's Virts deck to me. I am 99% sure fatboy deck was manufactured by the same factory that produced Legends, Moth/Myth.
They feel like Legends/Pr1me but without the glossy finish, hence a little bit more sticky than them and therefore provides a stronger paper texture/hand feel.
Though, clearly I can't prove my assertion as the factory will never confirm it with me.
It will take more strength to spring or LePaul spread this deck, at the meantime, they feel better than USPCC decks if you attempt Sybil style cuts or Flicker with it.
I would say decks with such paper stock is good enough to be considered as a nice deck, but it is also very special on its own, so, not an exact alternative to USPCC decks.

Re: fatboy playing cards by fatboyeatallday
I realized this was not designed by Zennith and that it is copied after Jerrys, I'm not that familiar with the Virts deck, but I like the tuck box and I really like the brightness of this deck.

Re: fatboy playing cards by fatboyeatallday
Hi Walrus,
I am very positive that the back design of fatboy, despite the similarities, is not a copy after Jerry's Nugget.
None of the fatboy designers are connected to the magic or playing cards community.
The reason why they managed to find this Taiwanese playing cards factory is that this factory happened to participated a gift fair in Hong Kong this year,
even I was not aware of this factory until I approached fatboyeatallday.
Right now fatboys are very preoccupied with their website upgrade and launch of new season of tee shirts etc.,
I hope at some point we will be able to see their new tee shirt designs on their site, the fatboy playing cards back design comes from a pocket design on one of their tee shirts.
One more thing, Coterie has acquired all the remaining stock of fatboy decks, so they won't be selling those decks anymore.
While we don't have a say over whether fatboy should make their decks a limited edition or not, but we won't encourage them to make another run of identical design,
or at the least of it, another run of same color scheme.

Thanks!

Hey Mike,
bit confused here...I was replying walrus's last post.
Anyway...so the fatboy deck will be available in less than 24 hours at Coterie1902.com
There's no surprise or anything with this release, only a bit more than 700 decks and price can be viewed here:

oh that...the brand didn't name their deck, so I have no idea how to call it too, the designer said most of their customers simply refer their brand as 'fatboy"...BMPokerworld wrote:Zenneth wrote:Hey Mike,

Re: fatboy playing cards by fatboyeatallday
Got these in the mail a few days ago, and I just have to write my impressions because these handle amazingly!
The biggest differences from USPCC cards are much stiffer stock and the cards stick together a lot better. They don't fan well right out of the box, but after just a few shuffles they fanned perfectly. Only faros faces to backs, but they do it well. Cuts are a breeze because packets hold together really well, which also makes giant fans and even giant circles A LOT easier than with USPCC decks. Unless you use fanning powder, you usually have to choose a deck (in new condition) that either fans/shuffles/springs well (most USPCC) or is better for cuts (Fournier). But this one does most of the things great. I still wouldn't say they're superior to USPCC, as they are a bit too stiff for my taste (might change after more breaking in) and faros and shuffles aren't as smooth. But if USPCC makes the best cards in the world, I rate whichever factory made these number 2. They need to make more decks!

Ah, I forgot about the courts in all the excitement. They are standard USPCC courts, but they have the looks of cheap knock offs with small deviations from the real ones. Boring, but also somewhat interesting.dazzleguts wrote:What do the courts look like?
