Funny - I was just looking at some decks with that back yesterday - not my favorite type of transformation, but I will likely grab a pack just to encourage the behavior

what an odd card back design for the 1800's. looks like the design someone would whip up in 3 minutes, toss it on the back of some standard courts, make them ultra rare limited super collectible, put them in an iphone made video with some cardist with green hair and sell them for $30 with your purchase guaranteeing access to buy the even more rare and limited gilded version with the bonus holo version if you buy a full brick. not forgetting the 16 different color versions in mystery bags so you could chase down the most artificially rare color.

I've found that a lot of early card backs are actually surprisingly simple.
WOPC wrote: The earliest playing cards had blank backs because of the difficulty of precisely aligning a back pattern with the fronts of the cards during manufacture, without small differences which would permit an opponent to recognise cards from their backs. Of course there was already the problem of the backs being marked with smudges or spots. During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, as printing technology improved, simple patterns of dots, geometric shapes, sprigs or other small repeating motifs were introduced and gradually perfected on the backs of cards.

Agreed, that back design wouldn't look out of place on a brand-new cardistry deck - I love it when really old styles come back around to match what's in vogue

So... This project is under intellectual property dispute. I wonder what will happen now as the project is already successfully funded.

Hard to imagine what the dispute might be on a reproduction deck of this age - perhaps there was some modern bit of graphics I’m not remembering…

In any case I’m sure that PCD will sort it out amicably

I shot them a query on the matter

I figure most likely is someone is laying claim to the “only photographs” of the deck if we assume the claim is legitimate at all - which I’m not sure I’m doing yet

Will sent out a message in backer's PM inbox on July 11. See, this is what differentiates the best from the rest. Good clear communication with enough information that backers need to have confidence in PCD.
Dear Backer,

We would like to provide an update on the recent claim of copyright infringement made against us. We want to assure you that we are operating responsibly and are within our rights in the creation of this reproduction deck. We are actively engaged in discussions to resolve this situation as quickly as possible.

In light of this dispute, Kickstarter has temporarily placed all funds on hold. Should resolving this matter cause delays or require unreasonable legal costs, we will ask the platform to initiate refunds and we will release the decks directly via PCD.

Despite this unfortunate issue, we do not expect any delays in delivery of your decks as the artwork has already been given the green light by the USPCC, and printing is on schedule for completion shortly.

We deeply regret any concern this may have caused and sincerely appreciate your understanding as we navigate through this challenge. We will continue to keep you updated as the situation unfolds.

Thank you for your continued support.
