Show us your (playing card related) coins

Unread post by Strag »

Trying this as was brought up in another thread, realised I have over 100 coins from various playing card campaigns and haven't really seen them documented anywhere so seeing if this thread gets any traction. Here's a couple recent ones that I really like a lot, from the Divergent Realms Series 2 campaign. Great use of enamel fills to add colour. These are quite large, aound 50mm in diameter.

I've owned between 60 and 70 coins whilst collecting decks, but stopped buying them when I stopped buying complete sets a few years ago. (It felt great to let that need go!)

I don't have many photos, but those I do are on my site.

Here is my small collection, a shot of my favorites, and the coins I got from Dead on Paper (kinda sorta card related) that I absolutely love.

Some great coins being posted include a few I don't have!

Next up for me a two parter from one of my favourite coin designers: Randy Butterfield aka Midnight Cards.

Randy has done some different things with coins and in the first set I will focus on the ones he did using hard enamel. This is a process where ground class is included in the paint which allows the coin to be heated at high temperatures and then ground down into a smooth finish. It gives a nice polished feel to the coin and (as you can particular see in the Ornates coins) some really spectaular colours and detailed designs.

What you see here are the coins for the Ornate decks as well as Grinders and Draconian. All of them are very faithful to the deck designs. The Draconian one is unique in that rather than both sides being hard enamel, the reverse is a bare polished metail, and there is a real beautiful tactile texture of the swirl and dragon scales.

Next up from Randy are coins from other campaign that use the soft enamel process. As you can see with these he also use some different techniques, but always remaining faithful to the campaign designs.

The two Imperial designs are very similar in their imagery but the Imerial Gold has the red enamel fill. Both have elements that are raised and quite pleasing to the touch, but I really prefer the non-enameled Imperial coin as really standing out like a classic coin.

I'm a sucker for unusual shapes, so the Wild West with a design like a sherrif's badge and the Slot Series coin shaped like a slot machine really spoke to me, although I think the Slot one would have really benefited from some colour. The Rome coin is a goof example of a classy way to use soft enamel whilst the King of Tigers coin was a decent idea that unfortuantely doesn't really show well as the colour fills are so light that it's hard to see the nice details.

It’s cool seeing all of those in one place! I forgot how cool the Honeybee and Imperial (with the red enamel) Coins turned out.

The King of Tiger Coin enamels should’ve been much darker. The Studio didn’t even get close to the Pantone colors I picked for them to try to match. I was pissed about that one.

I’ve definitely learned that Shiny Gold Finish + Red or Black Enamel are always gonna look great. The 2 Coins we did for last year’s Red Rising Decks are a couple of my favorites (pics attached).

I’m finishing up a House of Tudor design right now (King Henry VIII, Anne Boleyn, Queen Elizabeth I…). I plan on doing a Diecut Tudor Rose Coin for that one. Should be cool!

Thanks, Randy

Those coins look amazing Randy! I'll have to see if I can find them somewhere as I didn't back the Red Rising campaign (the decks just weren't my thing and I missed the coins). Love the idea of a coin in the shape of a rose!

Today's set is from Jackson Robinson. He hasn't produced a coin in a while that I'm aware of and I'm missing a few as some are from camapaigns I didn't back or just didn't care for the coins themselves. What you see here are the 4 coins produced for the early Federal 52 campaigns as well as the 2 coins from the OG Sherlock Holmes decks. Of the six, one in particular stands out, which is the Hounds of the Baskerville coin. The only one to use enamel, it's done in a creative way to fill the negative space behind the art of the "hound" and neatly sets off the black polished metal used to highlight the image. My coin isn't in the best of shape as you can see it's a bit tarnished, I need to give it a nice polish. The black nickel metal used it really very nice and I don't have another coin quite like that one.

Like all of Randy's coins previously (and unlike the Divergent Realms coins) these are a fairly standard 38mm in diameter, the size I tend to prefer as I use the coins as a card protector when I'm playing poker and anything smaller just isn't substantial enough for me. The coins that Jackson made that I don't have (at least that I'm aware of) were made for Independence, Wasteland, Texas and Legal Tender (US and Chinese) and the holy grail for me, the Maduro coin. Still have no idea why I didn't pick one of those up!

I recently picked up one of Nicolai Aaroe and Isolated Thunderstorm's Norse Medals and was very pleased with it. There were four different ones to choose from and they're huge. It's almost 3 inches across and weighs about 5 ounces. I've been using it as a paperweight on my desk.

Next up, one of the most prolific coin producers was Albino Dragon (I don't think he's producing cards any more). Almost every campaign he did included a coin, so much so that at one point he produced "gift boxes" that included a deck and a coin. Whenever available I managed to pick up a coin, but I have to say that although the designs were faithful to the campagin, the coins themselves where a bit of a let down. One thing he did that helped control costs was he only made one side of the coins unique, the other side included the logo of the Albino Dragon company. So you will see in the pictures below, I am only showing the reverse side once, whilst the obverse is unique to each campaign. The reason this would be cheaper is that for each side of a coin you must make a mold which has a fixed cost. By making the mold only once for the reverse, he was able to save on that cost. Good economics, but does make for a bit of a plain side to that coin.

The first image shows my least favourite coins, including the Princess Bride, Cthulhu and a few dragon coins, whilst the second image highlights my favourites including White Rabbit and Name of the Wind (3 coins) along with the shot of the reverse side logo.

Only coin of mine that I don't already see in the thread. Was my first ever Kickstarter backing, jumped onto the very first thing I saw, which sadly turned out to be version 16 of 49 of the De'vo series. However, the coin that came with it is, imo, still pretty nice. It's got some solid weight to it, which I love and it's my go-to card guard on poker nights.

(I'm more of an antique collector - I've supported a few KS campaigns but just stuck to the basics, didn't pay much attention to how they work beyond just getting a deck of cards, but these coins have me curious)

I’m not sure about other KS Creators, but it’s probably true for most of them as well. I only produce enough non-Playing Card items like Coins, Books, Custom Brick Boxes, Bowling Pins, Wood Ouija Boards…. that are needed for Kickstarter orders + a few extra for myself. I pretty much treat anything that’s not Playing Cards as Kickstarter exclusive items.

I’m not sure about post-campaign trading or selling from Backers though.

Thanks, Randy

Here's my very limited collection of coins. Didn't include the HotRS and the 2 TGW coins which are already shown here. Nor most of the other poker chips I got as part of a set or stretch goal.

Only bought the Devastation and Ecliptic Antique silver finish coin. The rest were part of the reward tier or given free.
20230522_213532.jpg
20230522_213455.jpg
Top from Left: Devastation Silver Edition, De Novo, Chao , Master Series Darklordz Gold
Bottom from Left: Luminosity, Ecliptic Antique Silver Finish, Wasteland Alice clay poker chip, Master Series Darklordz Black Nickel.

My absolute favorite is the Devastation Silver by Jody Eklund. The picture doesn't do it justice. The details are amazing and the red enamel goes very well with the deck theme. Much better than the original Devastation coin.

The De Novo coin was a very nice surprise for UC members who backed the De Novo project. Turned out very well with the 2 tones. At $20 per coin, I wouldn't have gotten it myself, but I really appreciate it and can see why it cost that much.

The 2 Master series coins turned out very nice. The details popped out very well.

Ecliptic; while the details are nice, but didn't turn out quite the way I expected. Not sure why.

Luminosity was disappointing in the way that it didn't come out as nicely as the it was shown on the Kickstarter page. Details didn't pop out as much as expected compared to Devastation Silver. Maybe the pressing wasn't as deep as it could be to create the sharper detail.

As on the topic of coins, I don't see many offering coins now. But that could be just me not paying as much attention to KS projects.

Those that did have now switched to metal cards. Are the cards better than the coins with the extra size? Anyone who got coins and metals cards can chip in on this?
