Re: All aboard the Hanafuda Railroad
While awaiting the next batch of decks to arrive (including the latest from MPC which is on the way) I dusted off the old CarveWright machine and did a few tests to make sure it was in good order - the last one being a design from a hanafuda card

Re: All aboard the Hanafuda Railroad
Here is one I have been seeking for quite a while - from Oishi Tengudo, listed on their website but long out of stock - found it sitting on a lonely corner in Japan looking for a good home - did I rescue it, or did it rescue me?

Re: All aboard the Hanafuda Railroad
Setsugekka Hanafuda fortune telling cards (Ichikafuda?)
You will recognize the art from the Nishiki decks - these are large format tarot like cards
Snow, Moon and Flowers (雪月花, setsu-getsu-ka or setsu gekka) is a Japanese expression and theme in art and design originating from a poem by Tang dynasty poet Bai Juyi.[1] It became popular in the late Edo period. It is a metonym for beautiful sceneries in the nature in Japanese.
Translation from the back of the box:
Japan's traditional "Hanafuda fortune-telling" is revived in the present day.
There is actually another way to use Hanafuda used in games such as "Koikoi" and "Flower Matching". That's "Hanafuda fortune-telling". Hanafuda, which was born and developed in Japan, is based on the aesthetics and sensibility of Japanese people. Therefore, the feature is that the interpretation of the tag can be done smoothly by anyone.
This card scrutinized the literature of "Hanafuda fortune-telling" compiled in the past and reconstructed it as "divination technique" & "modern design". Flowers from ancient times
"Hanafuda fortune-telling" where there is a document that is often performed at the Yanagikai and merchant houses. Please use it as a hint to live a better life.
Comes with instruction booklet (in Japanese) which I will do my best to translate…
Compared to standard poker card size:
Booklet translation excerpts:
Introduction:
First of all, the charm of Ichikafuda fortune-telling
Speaking of Hanafuda, "come, come on." Assorted flowers" "5
There are many people who associate it with games such as "Mokuri" and the scene of gambling. However, although it is not well known, there is another use.
That's "Hanafuda fortune-telling".
Hanafuda is a card born in Japan, and at least in the middle of the Todai period, the predecessor of the current Hanafuda, "Hanawase Karuta" was loved by the wealthy people. Because it is based on the aesthetics and sensibility of Japanese people, it is a big feature that it is very friendly to us who are modern people.
This feature also leads to the ease of fortune-telling. For example, the pattern of Hanafuda is the flowers and seasonal events that can be seen in Japan. You can imagine the seasons and events very naturally just by looking at the tag, so it will be easy to interpret.
Also, by looking closely at the picture, you can enjoy it in a different way. Because the flowers drawn on the bill are not flowers that bloom in the fields, but are cared in full bloom in the residence of the headbook, the Edo residence of each fall, or in the garden of a large merchant's house.
It's an attentive flower. All of them were popular with wealthy people, and you can have a glimpse of their luxurious hobbies. In addition, the cherry blossom tag is for cherry blossom viewing.
The equipment, on the effective tag, is depicted celebrating the offering of the Double Ninth Festival, so you can see how people at that time enjoyed the beauty and events of the seasons.
Hanafuda became the current form in the middle of the Edo period, but it is not clear when and how Hanafuda fortune-telling was started. The "Encyclopedia of Hobby Entertainment" (Takeshi Takahata / Tokyo Shoin), published in 1958, says, "It has been done well in the hanayanagi world and merchant houses for a long time," but the current situation is that we don't know more than that.
However, Hanafuda fortune-telling is a technique that is friendly, easy to fortune-telling, and gives the result of "I see".
Since I wanted to introduce it to as many people as possible, I reconstructed the technique by referring to past books and the papers of researchers on Hanafuda.
In addition, in order to make it easy to fortune-telling, it is made into a bigger and thinner card than a normal flower card. I would be happy if you could use it as a hint to have a better day.

The procedure of fortune-telling
When doing Hanafuda fortune-telling, the first thing I want you to do is prepare for fortune-telling.
[Stepl] Calm down and prepare the environment
Take a deep breath and calm down. At the same time, let's secure a place where you can quietly do fortune-telling. It doesn't matter where you have space to line up your cards, but it's recommended to turn off your smartphone or ringtones.
[Step 2] Clarify the theme of fortune-telling
In order to make effective use of the results of fortune-telling, it is important to narrow down what to do fortune-telling. For example, when you tell a fortune about love, "What is my luck in love?" Rather than a vague question, "When is the chance to meet?"
"How can I make up with my lover?" It would be a good idea to ask a specific question.
[Step 3] Decide how to deploy Hanafuda Here are four deployment methods (spreads). Choose the method you like.
●1 discount (see 12 pages)
Draw only one card and fortune-telling. It's perfect when you want a concise answer or when you want to get used to Hanafuda fortune-telling. In the morning, it is also recommended to draw one sheet before leaving the house and predict the fortune of the day.
● 3 discount (see 13 pages)
It is suitable when you want to look at the flow of time in the present, the past, and the future and think about what you should do in the future.
● 5 discount (see 14 pages)
In addition to the present, past, and future, it is suitable when you want to know the feelings and situation of the person you care about. It's a convenient way to tell a variety of relationships on one-on-one, including love.
●How to use all bills (see page 64)
It's a short, a few minutes, and if it's long, it takes an hour, but you can deal with the problem carefully. This is the best development method that I would like you to use in the scene of "This is the best."

January:
With the help of God and the surroundings, things will progress.
Tsuru ni Tsuru
Pine and red strips
Matsu no Sufuda
Matsu no Sufuda
Keyword long life waiting for aid Indomitable
Yoshiyoshi
Yes or No Yes
Static or static
The meaning of the four cards
Kadomatsu, which is decorated on New Year's Day, is a landmark for you to come without hesitation. As this shows, pine is a sacred plant, which means that you can receive help from the surroundings, including God. Also, Matsu is Yoshimitsu, and "Matsu" leads to "Waiting for God", so when this bill comes out, it's better to wait for the opportunity to heat up than to act forcibly. Because it is an evergreen tree, it also means "longevity" or "indomitable life". The time is the new year,
It represents a month, a month, and a year.
The solution of the special tag
● ni-zuru
We represent a harmonious partnership because once you turn, you will be chosen for the rest of your life. As it is said that cranes are a thousand years, and I am a thousand years, it is also a symbol of longevity. In addition, as the word "one voice of a crane" indicates, it means that the situation will change drastically with a person who has the power to speak. In addition, Tsuru no buddies mean that they can see the way they should go because they can see their eyes at night. If you work hard like this, you will be able to succeed. In addition, the crane drawn on the flower bill is a kind called Tancho.
●Pong and red strips
"Akayoroshi" written on a strip of paper means "Obviously good." This means that you are "good" now, so there is a high possibility that you will get a good evaluation from the people around you. Also, red is a color that means activeness, so when this tag comes out
Please act aggressively, not "wait (pine)". By doing so, you will get help from the people around you, and the situation will improve. In addition, when multiple cards are deployed, if they come out side by side with a card that has the meaning of evil, it has the effect of mitigating it.

January continued:
Love and marriage luck
It's tied. You are blessed to meet people by introduction. He said, "I'm going to have a relationship with you. "Wait" is more old (except for pine and red strips). Love that takes time to nurture. I'll go out with you before I grow up. If the other party is passive, it is difficult to develop without mediation. If you move from yourself, you can escape.
●Matsu ni Tsuru: The opponent who will walk together for the rest of his life. Become an official relationship. Confession and proposal. Arbitration is necessary to make up. Even if I want to break up, I can't break up.
●Pong and red strips: Aggressive action. A game. Bridge over
I need it. If you have a fight, you should apologize first.
Interpersonal luck
A smooth relationship. The trouble doesn't get bigger.
Suppress your feelings and prioritize others. Those who come will not refuse, and those who leave will not chase them. I'll think about it at a distance. If you listen carefully to people, you will find a clue to solving the problem. I'm blessed with a comfortable working environment.
●Matsu ni Tsuru: Listen to your partner's advice to solve the problem. A person with leadership appears. We can go out with each other for a long time
Green. A person who speaks without hesitation creates a solution.
●A red strip of paper to me: When I hear the opinions of outsiders, I have a good idea. If you say your opinion firmly, it's a sound.
Work and academic luck
Hired work. Change jobs by pulling out. Career advancement. Sudden transfer. The recommendation determines where to go to school. The path I'm aiming for is right. Qualifications are required. It is difficult to turn to an unknown field. Wrap it up in a long thing. It's good to be a strong man behind the scenes.
●Matsu ni Tsuru: A relationship with overseas. I have an offer. It's up to the person who brokered me to change jobs. If you move too much, you will fail. If you stand up, it's good. Be careful of power harassment.
• Pine and red strips: Career advancement and career counseling is a voice. It's better to take it home and think about it.
Money luck
You can earn an income without moving. There is an extra income.
It is enriched by forgetting investments and maturity of deposits. If you wait a moment for what you want, the price will go down. Investment is from a long-term perspective. Accumulate money in a solid way. A vague anxiety about money. Profit from real estate. Spend money on people.
●Matsu ni Tsuru: There is an extra income. A safe investment where you can see the future. Take a loss and gain. You can get loans and support.
Receive a reward. Personal connections lead to profits.
●Red strips of pine trees: You get expensive things from people. It's good to invest in yourself. Investment that leads to profit.

Re: All aboard the Hanafuda Railroad
Genghis Khan's Jin-kun Hanafuda and Poker set - and I’m guessing thats what it is, as that appears to be what it says on the back of the poker cards - I did notice the little fella has a rifle in the later months, so it does seem correct
These are very high quality handmade hanafuda cards - don’t know for sure but with the excellent warp and high craftsmanship it must be Oishi Tengudo who made them.

Re: All aboard the Hanafuda Railroad
Some bits from the instructions included with the Shiki deck:
As seen above, the deck is a hybrid of Hanafuda/Kabufuda, four suits of 13 cards amongst which the hanafuda cards are laid out

Re: All aboard the Hanafuda Railroad
So a bit of comparison between Shiki (warrior deck in this case) and standard hanafuda - here is Shiki in numeric order, as it would be used to play koi koi - indeed all checks out, with the correct distribution and location of brights, tens, banners and chaff (as well as the lightning card):
Side by side with standard hanafuda
The brights and tens:
Shiki in hanafuda order, which is its numeric order (Marked the brights in blue and the animals (tens) in green)

Re: All aboard the Hanafuda Railroad
Hana Jong - a nice find from the dark corners - been looking for a mahjong tile style hanafuda set for quite a while, this one I stole for a song, will surely pick up others in the future and likely pay through the nose for more than one…
UPDATE: alas, the sale fell through and it slipped through my fingers - on the upside, new thing to hunt for

Re: All aboard the Hanafuda Railroad
There's a Hana Jong game?
They actually merged Hanafuda with Mah Jong? Amazing! The Chinese familiar with Mah Jong will be wondering how the gambling rules apply to this game.

Re: All aboard the Hanafuda Railroad
Stumbled upon these, ordered one of each - pricey and not expecting the stock to be too nice but the art grabbed me - depending on the quality I might be grabbing another set…
They are in Switzerland

No box, they come with a pouch for storage

Hanafuda tile set acquired - had to pay through the nose, but worth it
Tax stamp puts it from the 60s-80s

Re: All aboard the Hanafuda Railroad
When it rains it pours - found another set
Engraved and hand painted
https://jantaku-factory.com/?pid=155088166
Seems I was lucky and I found the web page at just the right time - they shipped it to me, despite my not ordering the table - now out of stock.
They say they will be making more for general sale though: “In the near future, we plan to sell only Hanafuda tiles.”

Re: All aboard the Hanafuda Railroad
One set of note - came across it while searching. Wasn’t available for sale, but perhaps one day one of us will find one…
