While awaiting the next batch of decks to arrive (including the latest from MPC which is on the way) I dusted off the old CarveWright machine and did a few tests to make sure it was in good order - the last one being a design from a hanafuda card

Here is one I have been seeking for quite a while - from Oishi Tengudo, listed on their website but long out of stock - found it sitting on a lonely corner in Japan looking for a good home - did I rescue it, or did it rescue me?

You will recognize the art from the Nishiki decks - these are large format tarot like cards


Snow, Moon and Flowers (雪月花, setsu-getsu-ka or setsu gekka) is a Japanese expression and theme in art and design originating from a poem by Tang dynasty poet Bai Juyi.[1] It became popular in the late Edo period. It is a metonym for beautiful sceneries in the nature in Japanese.

There are many people who associate it with games such as "Mokuri" and the scene of gambling. However, although it is not well known, there is another use.

That's "Hanafuda fortune-telling".

Hanafuda is a card born in Japan, and at least in the middle of the Todai period, the predecessor of the current Hanafuda, "Hanawase Karuta" was loved by the wealthy people. Because it is based on the aesthetics and sensibility of Japanese people, it is a big feature that it is very friendly to us who are modern people.

This feature also leads to the ease of fortune-telling. For example, the pattern of Hanafuda is the flowers and seasonal events that can be seen in Japan. You can imagine the seasons and events very naturally just by looking at the tag, so it will be easy to interpret.

Hanafuda became the current form in the middle of the Edo period, but it is not clear when and how Hanafuda fortune-telling was started. The "Encyclopedia of Hobby Entertainment" (Takeshi Takahata / Tokyo Shoin), published in 1958, says, "It has been done well in the hanayanagi world and merchant houses for a long time," but the current situation is that we don't know more than that.

However, Hanafuda fortune-telling is a technique that is friendly, easy to fortune-telling, and gives the result of "I see".

Genghis Khan's Jin-kun Hanafuda and Poker set - and I’m guessing thats what it is, as that appears to be what it says on the back of the poker cards - I did notice the little fella has a rifle in the later months, so it does seem correct

These are very high quality handmade hanafuda cards - don’t know for sure but with the excellent warp and high craftsmanship it must be Oishi Tengudo who made them.

So a bit of comparison between Shiki (warrior deck in this case) and standard hanafuda - here is Shiki in numeric order, as it would be used to play koi koi - indeed all checks out, with the correct distribution and location of brights, tens, banners and chaff (as well as the lightning card):

Hana Jong - a nice find from the dark corners - been looking for a mahjong tile style hanafuda set for quite a while, this one I stole for a song, will surely pick up others in the future and likely pay through the nose for more than one…
