Re: Portfolio52 Deck of the Year 2022
Does anyone have a good list of 2022 decks? I tried searching "2022" on P52 (like they suggested ) and it's just pulling up all kinds of decks, old and new
And here are the categories:
Rookie decks - do these all qualify? Vivid Kingdoms, Dark Patina, Ink Beast, 1920, Festum
And here are the categories:
DOTY ideas: Eye of the Ocean, duh... For best tuck I'm thinking Almanac Vol. 2, Legionary Dusk...Deck of The Year
Rookie of The Year
(where a producer/designer delivered their debut deck during 2022)
Best Magic Deck
Best Cardistry Deck
Best Tuck
Best Back Design
Best Innovative tech/design
(where a deck incorporates the likes of different print techniques such as foils, UV ink, gilding; art concepts such as AI; unique packaging such as laser cut tucks, heat sensitive tucks)
Best Ace(s)
(either a single custom Ace or all 4 Aces)
Best Court Cards
Best Joker(s)
Best of the Extras
(this can include gaff cards, ad cards, numbered certificates)
Best Custom Pips
Best Looking Fan

I won't be participating as a nominator or as a voter. I disagree with the process as a whole.double_left wrote: ↑Sat Jan 07, 2023 10:32 pm Is this still even a thing after that blow out with what’s her face…

Re: Portfolio52 Deck of the Year 2022
The Rookie category description refers to “producer / designer”. I wonder if that means One Young might qualify in this category as a debut designer - even if Curio doesn’t qualify as a debut producer?
Edit: same question arises for other decks like Mechanimals (debut for Celsius Pictor I believe, but not for Max)

Re: Portfolio52 Deck of the Year 2022
Not sure if it’s a good list - more of an aide-memoire - but here’s a list I made because I was having a similar issue isolating 2022 releases from P52.
It’s open to editing so happy if anyone wants add or correct anything (especially release date info which might be relevant to qualification).
I’m sure there’ll be a bunch of gross omissions (and it barely touches the cardistry domain) but might help as a starter.

Re: Portfolio52 Deck of the Year 2022
I'm hopelessly lost for this year's nominations. Basically just hoping that our cumulative wisdom can manage to put the deserving names on the ballot, but I'm doubtful lol. In order to make sure we have a better idea for next year, I've started a Google doc similar to the one Pip used to use ahead of the awards. Only decks that actually materialize in consumers' hands in 2023 get added.
If new decks were only Kickstarters, I could easily maintain the doc alone. I have a huge blindspot for niche store releases and that's one of the reasons I'm a member of, and frequently browse UC. Even so, I miss a lot of these kinds of releases. If you want access to the doc, and please let there be at least a few of you who do lol, just ask and you'll have it. Let's make 2023 a much easier nomination period

Re: Portfolio52 Deck of the Year 2022
This is one of the reasons that I don't participate. It's just too "open" as to what can be nominated and I really think there should be some curation.
Shouldn't it just be that the designers themselves can submit for various categories and then a committee of volunteers can validate the application against specified criteria? Without criteria being clear it's hard to see how it's going to improve.
Also curious who is involved in this bit from the Insta post
"- once the preliminary stage of voting closes, it will be moved to a vote by an impartial committee made up of Collectors, Magicians, Cardists and Retailers"

Re: Portfolio52 Deck of the Year 2022
The Instagram post in question, FYI
I don't blame them one bit for dropping the giveaways, seems like way more trouble than it's worthWith the preliminary stage of voting now closed, what is going to happen next?
Over the next couple of weeks all 13 categories will be organised and curated based on the public preliminary stage of voting. As mentioned in the last post (and stories), it will be moved to a committee made up of Collectors, Cardists, Magicians, and Retailers. And will also include input from our sponsors, who graciously award the winners with some top prizes.
A number of requests from past years' voters and P52 members has prompted us to explore this avenue.
Of course we didn't want to exclude the public altogether which is the reason why we kept the preliminary stage open to everyone to help curate the initial list of decks.
In the next few posts between now and the first week of Feb, we will be revealing nominees in the build up to the top 3.
We've also had questions about giveaways which was a huge driving force in the last two years. We've decided not to host giveaways this year but instead would like to encourage others to host their own during the DOTY season.
Hope this helps clear a few things up and best of luck to everyone

Re: Portfolio52 Deck of the Year 2022
TBF the giveaways was a UC thing. When it moved to P52 and the process changed it makes all the sense in the world to remove it. Given that no one here has said anything, I'm guessing that UC is likely not going to be represented on the "committee" either, which is a real shame if so.
I'm wondering who is doing the posting, since Alex hasn't responded to any of my messages for 6 weeks now via email, KS, insta or here regarding questions around my significant pledge ($450) on the recent KS campaign. Luckily Jack Brutus Penny has been great about comms so I'm not too worried.

Re: Portfolio52 Deck of the Year 2022
Well, technically UC is P52 so, there is that, haha.
Dunno if she's still active for Alex but in the year they pulled the voting from UC to the P52 it was Pipchick that managed the P52 account. So I guess she's still handling it.
Input from sponsors? Kinda lol.

The extras category felt like a huge flop to me. Putting 17 hearts on a card puts you in the top 3 from all the decks in the year?

Re: Portfolio52 Deck of the Year 2022
I had thought they had meant using that "committee" just for determining the final nominees for voting. That's kinda crap. It devalues the entire awards for this year. It's basically meaningless this year now.

Re: Portfolio52 Deck of the Year 2022
I am fine with a Committee voting. The problem in the past was that this became a popularity contest. As it became more popular, the voting got more of a potential issue. There are problems with any way they go on this, so I am not going to second guess those running the program this year. I sure as heck don't want the job.
Congrats to all the nominees and winners announced so far.

Re: Portfolio52 Deck of the Year 2022
The problem with this version is that the public's involvement, which is a large contributor in making the public a stakeholder in these awards, is reduced to nominations, and those were a disaster. Searching by year on P52 like P52 suggested was a giant waste of time and I bet that most nominations suffered from a healthy dose of recency bias. The rest of obfuscated until the announcement of the winners. It doesn't feel as though we were any meaningful part of the process.
When compared to how things used to be, this is far inferior as far as I'm concerned.
PS: Again, I've got a Google sheet going that I'm using to list all the delivered decks from 2023. If anyone wants to help sort, very generously, this year's decks into any of the award categories as the year goes on, message me

Re: Portfolio52 Deck of the Year 2022
I'll note that if any of the admins/mods here at UC were involved in the committee that selected the winners of the P52 awards, nobody mentioned it to me.
I recognize that when Alex bought the UC assets (and, as such, became this forums' curator and benefactor), he also assumed the right to do what he wants with the branding of the site and the DOTY awards that UC used to vote on. I think his decision to move the UC DOTY to P52 and manage it from there, and then change the rules and the nature of the awards from there is entirely fine.
AND
The fact that the P52 awards are now no longer a "People's Choice" award but more of a "Industry Insider" award means that if the UC wanted to put together its own DOTYs again, this community is totally free to do so. I mean, why not, right?
As a former curator of the UC DOTYs, I know it can be a big task and it's not one that I'm currently inclined to take on again, but if someone here wanted to take this on (whether for 2022 or 2023), I'll be happy to provide whatever support I can.
Just sayin'.
