You'll want one of the original decks from 2014, then, if you can afford 'em.Adamthinks wrote: ↑Tue Aug 23, 2022 1:10 pm I like the design of these, but I wish he used metallic inks instead of foil. Re: Black Requiem...
I picked up an Autumn for $25 two years ago. With inflation and all I wouldn't pay more than $30 nowadays so, it's not a breaks the bank deck. Although I know, that's a price even two years ago you had to be patient to find.
Requiem, with all the back story of being a very personal deck from Lorenzo and the art in general is certainly a good deck but a must have is kinda exaggorated. But I'm in general not a must have guy. The tuck box makes this deck worth picking up imho but being a Patreon I didn't have to get some extras with this release. The ones I'll get are more than enough for me.
I'm no fan of Cartamundi's stock lookwise and feelwise either, not to mention they turn to poop so quick. When it comes to longevity they even are behind EPCC/LPCC.
It always speaks volumes when cardistrytouch returns to USPCC after C9 was discontinued and Ondrej is on record for saying he's using Cartamundi only because of their better registration due to his edge marking system.
Praised be the gods that Lorenzo is using WJPC for non-foiled decks like Gambling Frog.

I'd be curious what you think the metallic ink would change in regards to the optic?Adamthinks wrote: ↑Tue Aug 23, 2022 1:10 pm I like the design of these, but I wish he used metallic inks instead of foil. Re: Black Requiem...
In general it's harder to show fine detail with foil and the texture of the stock he chooses makes it look muddier. It takes away from the general intended premium effect of foil and IMO detracts from the overall look of the deck instead of enhancing it. With metallic ink, you can show finer detail easier so it won't look as "muddy" and because it's less shiny, the texture doesn't take as much away from the look of the metallic ink. It wouldn't be perfect, but I think it would ultimately look better. Perhaps i'm off base, but that's the way it seems to me.Harvonsgard wrote: ↑Wed Aug 24, 2022 12:13 am

If he's set on foil, I think Legends would be a better printer choice for those particular decks.

Re: Black Requiem...
The original decks use metallic inks to great effect.
I love the lore of the first decks, along with the design, illustrations, color choices, and feel. Requiem was a debut project, but it had (has) the confidence and persuasiveness of a seasoned designer at the top of his game.
Your mileage may vary, of course, and certainly we all have our different favorites. Lorenzo is particularly skilled at getting the most out of whatever medium he decides to work in. When he chooses foil, he extracts from that foil every ounce of awesomeness that can be extracted. When he opts to not use foil -- and, to be clear, *many* of his projects eschew foil -- he makes the most of whatever other materials (inks, stock, shapes, gilding, etc.) he chooses to use. Each of his decks have a theme of some sort and they embody a cohesive story.
The OG Requiem decks told a story for which blood red and shiny gold inks were absolutely integral. The heart of this follow-up deck is the sigils, and those have a profound role in this story; they transcend. Employing the silver and gold foil for the sigils sets them apart from the rest of the illustrations, as well they should.
YMMV, but for me, the design elements, the illustrations, the tuck box, the story, and every other aspect of this project combine to form a complete work of art. If you don't dig the media he chooses to tell this story, then maybe this story isn't for you. Maybe the OG decks suffice, or perhaps you'd prefer the Notorious Gambling Frog or Eye of the Ocean or Heretics or HoTRS or Gemini or whathaveyou.
I don't have the Black Requiem in my hands yet, but based upon what I've seen so far -- both of this project and every previous project from Lorenzo -- I'm anticipating that this will prove to be a must-have deck.
And, I stand by my recommendation to newcomers: If you want to see what a deck of playing cards is capable of aspiring to, don't pass this up.

Re: Black Requiem...
I am a huge fan for the original design and also the Cartamundi stock with the foiling shininess so it's not a question for me to grab 6 decks more even though i already have one in the patreon reward.
I think i will probally love this one even more than EOTO.

Re: Black Requiem...
Arrived today - handle as nice as they look
They do want to faro from the top down, but a touch of polish on a pant leg puts them in shape for bottom up in a jiffy - perfect fans that really pop with the gold borders on the faces

Getting the more special version from Patreon, but decided to get this one also, mainly because I do not own any of these decks yet.

Re: Black Requiem...
I had decided to pull the trigger on these and I'm glad I did. They just arrived and they look great. I take back everything I said above. The foil looks really good on these.

As an Ace. I get two of these bad boys. Not sure if I will try to get a 3rd. Hopefully limited per patron so more have a chance to pick up any extras. if they don't sell out in seconds, I might stand a chance.

Re: Black Requiem...
This Black Requiem LTD550 variant has been a challenge, especially the tuckbox, which is showing gilding on both sides through small cutouts. A lot of manual work was done by @boschiero_newton to deliver perfectly printed tuckboxes. On top of that I had to number, sign, and prefold 550 boxes because machines are not that delicate. This a special variant for the 2022 high tier members on Patreon. 550 units made, numbered and signed.
Stay tuned, subscribe for updates on my site stockholm17.cards, because in January I reopen high tiers for all Photoshooting by @richardarturo47 awesome as always.
