They are the only cellulose acetate-based plastic card on the market, which accounts for their high cost and difficult manufacturing process. But unlike less expensive plastic decks, which are prone to chipping and breaking, they last forever. Recently I read a guide about Rapidstrike Urshifu VMax kicks off new HP developments. This card had a 90-point damage and attack level. They're not the best for cardistry, but they're fantastic for card games, especially poker because they can withstand peeking abuse.

I noticed something interesting in my collection of modern (1950s and newer) Bicycle decks. Turns out there was a short-lived tuck box from 1951 - c1952. This tuck has Rider Back in the same color as the box, and it has 808 centered on the top flap, not offset to the left (not shown).

01/23/23 ***** UPDATE ****** I was looking through old Bicycle magazine advertisements, and in the ads the tuck with Rider Back written in the same color as the tuck lasted until around 1959 (first ad). The second ad is the that showed Rider back written in the same color as the spade and is from 1960. Based un that, I updated the tuck date ranges.

01/26/23 ***** UPDATE **** Another change - around 1961 Bicycle changed the font for the name of the card back on the tuck. Made the letters more svelte.

c1917 United Drug Co Rexall decks.JPG

Here are two decks of Rexall playing cards from United Drug Co. Slipcase deck is 1917 according to the tax stamp, tuck box deck is from around the same time. Top deck was made by the Russell PCC, but I don't know who made the bottom deck. If anyone recognizes the court designs, let me know.

c1878 Andrew Dugherty Triplicate Playing Cards.JPG
I love these Triplicate decks from Andrew Dougherty, but I've never really understood how these were one of the first indices. Surely, there must have been other, simpler options for indices than placing a tiny version of the card in the opposite corners of the card. c1878

Thanks for sharing. That Ace of Spades is amazing. Even the Jack of Hearts inside the spade has the indices. That is a sweet deck with a great history. Yes, I agree that placing a picture of the card in the corner had to be a lot more complex that what we do now. My guess is that it just didn't occur to them at the time. It is a good idea, that needed to be improved upon over time.

1898 Brownie No 35 - American Playing Card Co.JPG
1898 Brownie No 35 - American Playing Card Co - J A Cts.JPG

This great set of The Brownie No 35 decks arrived over the weekend. Nov 21, 1898 on the tax stamp. The joker is outstanding. To borrow from the 52 Plus Joker facebook page:

“The Brownie” No.35 by American Playing Card Company, Kalamazoo, 1890. This deck came in four different colored backs (one not pictured). Using the Palmer Cox Brownies, the joker takes shots against several major card producing companies. NCC - National Card Company; AD - Andrew Dougherty ; US - United States Playing Card Company; SPC - Standard Playing Card Company; CC - New York Consolidated Card Company. Eventually USPCC would have the last laugh in 1915 when they acquired the American Playing Card Company.

Any of you modern deck guys know anything about this 1999 Ace of Spades variant? I’ve also seen it with a 2000 deck. Please share over in General Playing Cards Discussion thread.

Is it possible they used the different AoS to differentiate the deck as being part of a run to a major discount retailer, like a Costco or Sam's Club-style outlet? I'm fairly certain I've seen both of these AoS multiple times, so if I'm remembering correctly, it wouldn't have been confined to just the two years. Hmmm....

On the Guarantee card, the instructions are to send in the AoS if there's a defect found, yes? So, the distinction of the AoS could be used to denote something about the print run that the date code wouldn't be able to delineate.

Just a thought.

Here's a US8b Safety back c1895 with the tuck box. As you can see, the tuck box had a fancy repair job. I was able to track down the image on the paper used for the repair from text on the bottom referencing a director, producer, and writers, and turns out this was from an for the 1935 film "The Farmer Takes a Wife," which was Henry Fonda's debut film. Here's an ad with the same image but different text.

Collecting mostly antique decks, I don't often purchase a brick of cards, but I did for these beauties.

c 1920 Bee brick box label.JPG
c 1920 Bee brick box top.JPG
c 1920 Bee brick box decks.JPG
c 1920 Bee brick deck.JPG

1 brick Bee Club Special No. 92 Playing Cards, Back No. 67, Cambric Finish, Class A tax stamp (1919 - 1924). While I waited for these to arrive, I was debating whether to open a deck or not to see what was inside. Luckily, one decks tax stamp was almost completely torn, so it wasn't a hard decision. What was inside is nice. With the deck wrapping, the extra card, and the Long Island City address, that would confirm that these decks are indeed from 1919 - 1924. Now my only question is whether each deck comes with the same ad card inside or do some show the other Bee backs of the day? That one will stay a mystery.

Here's an interesting deck and tuck. It's a Russell & Morgan Co. Cabinet deck, Forest back, c1890, but I've never seen a Russell & Morgan tuck box like this before. The Landscape Backs Cabinet tuck has an embossed leather grain. Check it out.
