Hi, I'm Paul Lau. The Neon Card creator.
I did a Kickstarter project and end up sending all the backers double their rewards but with MADE in China decks. This is the reason why
First, I sincerely apologize to all the backers that support my project since the first day. I would like to apologize and tell you guys what happened from the first day I realized I can't make a proper BICYCLE brand deck, but due to the NDA (Non-disclosure agreement) in the contract and the pressure from the so called "Agency / Cosultant ".
After 4 years, part of the NDA in contract expired in yesterday, I can finally speak the truth and give a explain to all the backers.
About 4 years ago, when I am just 18 years old, I was planning to make a playing cards that about the Neon Light signs in old Hong Kong due to I am a Bicycle card lover and USPCC fans just like all of you.
And I put all my efforts to design and present this amazing idea with my college mate Marco who studied Creative and Muti Media (showed on the bottom of the tuck box) due to I don't know how to really "design" a deck, for example like AI, Photos hop.
And both of us are happy with the rider back designs. But we don't what the exact cost or steps to make a playing cards.
So at the age of 18, we decided to seek out for help. After we searched on the internet, we found there's a company that just make 12 Bicycle Decks about Zodiac (Still can't disclose too much) earlier through crowdfunding in of the same year we launched. The guy last name is Lai who owned a big playing cards retailers in Hong Kong.
I had a great talk at first, and we believed that he's experienced in making playing cards. So I hired him with a contract including making the Bicyle Neon Cards out with almost all the fund I got in this project. But end up he just told me that due to the policy change of the
Bicycle brand, there'll double up the price for making the og design.
And for sure, we don't have that kind of money for a year one student. So I asking the designer to change the back design but still print in Bicycle. But after all of that, Lai said it wasn't the same project we signed the contract and insisted I have to pay double price to him or he will just took all the money I paid for him with no refund. I would like to update to announce what happened to me and refund but he told me it will breach the contract.
In the end, I can only use all of my savings since I was a kid and the part time salary I worked for months to print the deck with a factory In China that's got the better quality than other crab manufacturer.
And for make up to the backers, I decided to do double up the decks you backed, which cost me actually lost abt 80k in total. And I can't do more in that time.
I know I definitely make a fault that time, and own all of the backers a deeply apologize, I am sorry. After all of that, I just faded out on cards or magic.
And now I lived in UK and just graduated. I hope one day I can do more for you guys.
Once again, I am sorry for all the backers and I never an Irresponsible person, I was regretting by the issue everyday, finally I can tell you part of the truth you guys deserve to know.
Thanks and Sorry
Paul Lau

Re: SCAM BY BOCOPO AND ALEX
Hey, Paul.
Your link to Kickstarter above is to an update that is "for backers only," so non-backers like myself just see a "404" error in the graphic for that link.
The title of this topic references Bocopo and "Alex," but I'm not clear: is Alex the "Lai" you refer to in the story?
Either way, this sounds like a messed up situation, and I'm sorry you (and your backers) had to endure this.
Thanks for coming to UC to talk about it.
Edit: for reference, everybody, this is the campaign that Paul is discussing above: https://unitedcardists.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=10938

That really sucks what you had to endure. It's amazing that despite all the problems you faced, you still went ahead to deliver the cards as much as you could afford. And you also went above by explaining just what happened, not only in KS, but also here.
It really speaks volumes of your character, integrity and perseverance when most just gave up and disappeared. Thank you.
