Thanks guys. My first priority is that professionals will consider these top of the crop as far as performance goes so thanks for the thoughts Sin. Of course this all comes at a cost so I have to be realistic, will all depend on the backing.

Cutting Evan. Haha no thanks, I take it as a compliment, the Artisans case is beautiful. I think you could say they are both inspired by the same source material. The elements in the case art are pulled directly from the court cards for continuity, with reference to 16th century border patterns so it all came together quite naturally. It would be difficult to break away from - but it is early in the design.

Sprouts, I love there's someone with a feel for the Rouens. Yes I want to use as much of the original detail as I can. And yes I noticed the artist signed his name.. ;) The flipping I considered important to keep pro players 100% happy but interesting point. I do have thoughts for an 'authentique' deck should this go well. Thanks for the extra info on the stock!

That's a big jump from Q2 to Q1...

It's not so much the artwork that is super similar but the black and gold box with a red seal is just like the Artisans.

Gold is a really popular color in design right now. Not just in magic, but all across the board.

Trickz - Rouen was in 1567. Just curious if you've seen theses cards from 1680? These were the next cards in a long line of cards that lead to the 808 series today. They were made by Hewson. http://www.wopc.co.uk/cards/oldcards.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

They show the first glimpse of what appears to be a sword in the King of Hearts. Also what is neat, he too signed the Knave of Clubs. http://aethercards.com/discourse/design ... ds-com/40/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Thanks Magic, yes there are some standards out there in design that are hard to avoid. Gold embossing has always been a symbol of quality - particularly in royalty. Royal seals have always been red. The case I'd like to see on a 'royal' blue, but going dark is needed to lift the gold. Looking around there are a few cases with the same format. I could make the seal green - which consciously or subconsciously would irk a lot of people. You're working with a visual language people already know :)

Hey Sprouts, yes :) I'm using those as a back up as they're pretty close in the detail. Bit of detective work in the research, the Rouen's are the base but they are missing cards of course. Referring to the Hewsons where I need confirmation on the detail. What was it about the Knave? There is some interesting research out there but that's another thread...

Trickz - I was updating my saved websites and thought this might help you out in symbolism. In the original Rouen by Pierre Marechal they don't have the Knave of Diamonds nor the Knave of Hearts. http://www.plainbacks.com/Establishing% ... ndard.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; It's more of a interpretation. One website did mention a card maker after Pierre Marechal by the name of Valerie, but I could not find the picture of the Knave of hearts nor the Knave diamonds.

Trickz - perhaps if you go with air cushion to broaden your pledge base the smooth finish alternative could be offered in a small run as a stretch goal?

sprouts - have you seen the Hewson replica deck Simon Wintle made? He actually carved wood plates for the courts, and made stencils for the colours and pips, so the cards would have the same "sense of vibrancy, old world chivalry and romance" as the originals. They are on off-white card stock that you can see through, but then so were all early cards. My deck came with a paper wrapper and a more modern box.

That sounds like a good option to me. I guess it depends on what UPSCC would consider a small run. Those are great links, all good info. The woodcuts are brilliant. I had been wondering about the little extras like packaging and boxing, paper wrapper was a thought. likely unrealistic. Cheers JM :)

Yes, Wintle produced those through the English playing card society and printed the cards all by hand, so, it was a special case replica pack using different economics than getting a modern deck printed through USPCC. A paper wrapper would perhaps have to come from a different printer and add too much cost.

Is the minimum still 2,500 decks if you have already ordered that or more for another version of the same deck? Does anyone here know?

i think the packaging would push this deck over the top, HOWEVER its a heck load of work, given the predicted response (which is going to be crazy), it might be too much to handle on your own. On the other hand, consider custom brickboxes, i think Randy Butterfield would be able to give you valuable advice =)

Yes true, its a different beast. But the thought of a short run at a higher spec with a special wrap. I might follow that up. Be interested to know on that second run with USP. Still waiting on a response there.

And I have to say, Randy's cards are awesome. Very talented guy

Hi everyone, busy week! Thanks again for all your comments and thoughts, appreciate them all and they do help in the process. To wrap up the first week I'd like to have a list of people who have shown an interest and have helped with comments, my 'foundation' supporters. There are people here I can find but if you haven't commented and would like to be on this list please sign up at http://www.originscards.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. Again I do appreciate it..

I'll flesh out the site in time but back into the design. Will post some progress shortly.

Nice progression to illustrate the connection.
(almost sounds poetic)
I would love to see a wrapper along with the smooth finish option. Glad to see you are considering it.
Once the kickstarter is over do you plan on selling more of these through the web site? If you do could there be something to distinguish the pledge decks from the straight out bought ones?

I like the look of this deck a lot. However when I first starting viewing this thread I didn't quite see the connection with the original. I didn't think you "Sexy" queen looked anything like the original.
However, after watching that video and seeing what you did to get the image ( Where it conformed and where you took your artistic licence) I went back and looked at the two side by side and see how you used your artists eye to get from one to the other.
I can definitely see the homage that goes beyond just an influence now.
Nice work.

Thanks guys, yes Dazz, early days but I would like to offer the decks on the site with a few changes. Paper wrap would be too difficult on a large run but a smaller collectors edition perhaps.

Thanks Utter, well I can understand your thoughts on the Queen, I was still working to find a balance between the historic and something ultra modern. I've pegged things back a little with the King so she may need to be pulled into line, so to speak..

Seems to be a split on kickstarter. I wasn't completely keen but I can see the freedom you have to get the specs everyone would prefer. Funding allowing..

No,No don't change the Queen. I like it. I was just saying until I saw the video I wasn't sure that the two related. I can see it now.

Finally have a full site up, can get back to the design. Does anyone know what the turn around with USPCC is? I heard around 8 weeks?

Not like 4 months. It took us about 5 weeks from the time the time everything was approved. But since it is YOUR deck, don't you think you should ACTUALLY contact USPCC YOURSELF?

Thanks!

Edit: I told USPCC I wanted to proceed on 4/13/13. I was sent a contract on 4/24/13. We had to work through some tuck box issues that took a couple of weeks. The decks are shipping to me this week. From start to finish about 7 weeks and about 5 weeks after all the details were worked out.

Hey thanks BRooke, that's pretty slick. Yes I contacted them a couple of weeks ago requesting a quote and details but haven't had a reply yet. Was starting to think this could take a while. I'll contact them again, cheers. I guess leading into Christmas may stretch things out a bit. Hey nice blog/site and the cards look great, Randy did a nice job :)

I'm just repeating what some have already said, but once you get everything finalized it will take 4 - 6 weeks after you have paid your first deposit which is due before they will start. Also depending on the complexity of what your doing it may add some time to get everything right. USPCC has been incredible to work with. They really went out of the way for me and some crazy stuff I wanted to try with the Federal 52 deck. We even tried some stuff they had never done before some things worked some didn't. As long as you do your part and be professional with the quality and organization of you work and files they will work hard for you too. Because in the end they are putting their name on the product too. If you end up doing a kickstarter just pad your ship date generously and be upfront with all of your backers about your pipeline. The worst thing you could do is start a kickstarter without a plan. I look at some of the kickstarter projects live right now that claim the USPC is printing their decks when just by the info on their pages they obviously haven't even called them yet.

In terms of your deck, the designs are great. I honestly welcome the huge number of deck projects that are coming out. The saturated market can only act as a crucible and raise peoples expectations and standards. In the end the bubble will burst but the standards will still remain at a very high level.

Hey Jackson, really nice to hear from you, I was just reading your piece on Loops. Thanks for the advice. Yes I've head nothing but good things about USP. Figured I'd need to be patient, expect they're flat out with the number of decks flying around. Awesome to hear they're flexible, have a couple of things I'm keen on too.

Kickstarter, have heard the horror stories. In no hurry to screw things up, just want to make a good deck and do it properly. The number of decks on KS was a bit gutting when I took a look. Pretty impressed with your structure and turnaround on your decks, well organised. Your artwork is awesome, lot of work there.

Thanks on this one, it's a way off where I wanted it to be, the early concepts were dropped onto Dribbble to get a little design feedback and made it's way to the forums. Stoked with the feedback of course and want to give everyone something nice so sorry if it sounds like I'm playing catch up, I am. Luckily there is an amazing bunch of people here to bounce off. Thanks for yours again, that's some good info thx.

Looking out for that Reserve Note, that's one really nice case. I'd been wondering why you went Kickstarter and not distributor?

Trickz - Whatever Jackson says, That is God speaking to you. :D "what are you talking about? don't you see it? this is the new pedale. it's like the second coming of jesus. he should do very good" http://aethercards.com/discourse/playin ... ederal-52/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; I'm hoping to be where he is now. I've watched your video 3 times. Hell, you could use that for your Kickstarter. Remember keep it under 3 mins.... And you might want to make it more personal. It seems to work. These guys did it first: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/146 ... s?ref=card" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Maybe a bit to personal but they set the tone. Watch for "Let me off my meds". Love it. I think you have a winner whenever you start it. I wonder are you going to have 2 Jokers and 2 Gaff cards?.... to give you time, these might be the best ones to draw for your video... Might have to watch it again.. http://vimeo.com/67313133" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; like the music...
