Discord is very good for broad near real-time conversations. If used properly, it can be an amazing tool. It's not the same as a forum, that's for sure, nor should it be considered for reference materials. You do need a certain level of actvity good channel oranisation (KWP one has a stupid number of channels for the amount of people and content) the right overall strategy and most importantly good moderation.

Discord is for a... discourse. It's very popular and useful in the gaming community. I find Reddit far less useful and a far worse development.

Yesterday morning Jackson did a Dawns Early Light program and instead of playing card designs did some brainstorming and planning for the LOTR Kickstarter campaign. I can tell you it is a bit massive and will include more than a few decks if all of the Kickstarter goals are met. There will be some cool features that will pull across all three campaigns as well if he goes as discussed. I don't see it posted on his YouTube Channel. I had just missed it and have been able to watch it as I guess it is still out there in, but not published. I could access it from my viewing history. The campaign could grow to seven decks. A Standard, Limited, Gilded and four decks for each season. I am on board for the standard limited and gilded. I am not sure about the four seasons decks though. I think it was looking like an April 20th launch date, but a lot to get done between now and then. The artwork so far looks great and I hope he offers his map of Middle Earth as an option. It is fun to see someone who is so knowledgeable about LOTR.

Seems like we be both have options we find useful, that's fantastic. Completely agree that Discord is not about finding past information.

So... I was part of the delayed shipping program and I have my KW decks shipped to me every quarter. For my first quarter shipment of 2021, I noticed that they missed out on the January STD & LTD subscription decks, which was the Sherlock deck. Informed the team and they told me that it will be in the next quarter's shipment.

Next shipment came and still no Sherlock deck. Informed them again. They guaranteed it will be in the next shipment.

Third quarter shipment came and still no Sherlock deck. Informed them again. Again they guaranteed it will be in the next shipment.

Final shipment came last week and still no Sherlock deck. Informed them again. Now they tell me that the Sherlock deck is out of stock and they would not be able replace it for me. Then they refunded me for the cost of the STD and LTD deck.

So now my 2021 Kings Wild Shorts set will forever be incomplete and I'm also out of the January sticker, which means that if the 2021 13th deck is ever produced, I'll be SOL. FML.

Yeah, it's sorted. Jackson said he will send them out right away and will not be billing me even though they have refunded me.

I could be wrong, but I thought it was only 6 decks, with the limited version being replaced by 4 season decks with a stretch goal instead of being a straight up addition.

I think Jackson played a good April Fool's joke on himself by way underestimating how much work he has left to do and initially planning a KS on April 1st. Of course then he figured out how long it would take, delayed the project to April 20th, and then immediately started working on a LotR kids deck which was not part of the KS plan .
That said, the current art for LotR is easily, EASILY, his best work yet. Honestly, it's way better than even the Alice decks. I am really excited for this project.

Artwork for the Truett .38 Special Deck (A deck honoring my Grandfather Truett Mayes) as been turned in. I just approved the proofs for this deck. Not quite sure on a release date just yet.

I'm toying with the idea of doing children's focused LOTR deck or maybe even a fun memory matching LOTR set.

Ummm, not seeing it myself. The Discord is open to the public, was easy for me to find and I shared the link here. He also posts stuff "only" on YouTube and Instagram that isn't available anywhere else. And on Discord you are pretty much getting immediate responses from him. Guess I shouldn't have bothered to share it?

Not everything is crawled by Google bots or saved for prosperity today via indexing on central search engines. UC has always been a place where we are sharing from other content sites with each other. Very few posts are creators actually interacting with only us. The very fact that you yourself shared things from Discord showed that you are bringing that content to UC in much the way other content is.

The future you decsribe is already here and it works. We are curating informaion for each other that we find of value.

I imagine you're talking about paid posts? I love Patreon and its system, but isn't the whole point there that the posts are exclusive?

On this we can agree. The world (and the internet) isn't gonna change to fit what you want, rather it will evolve. I fully expect that sadly, sometime in the not too distant future, UC as we know it will cease to exist (in fact Alex already hinted at a next stage evolution that I myself will likely not engage with as heavily). I'm an old man too, I just prefer to understand which direction the cloud is headed and got along with it, not make it stop so I can look at it for myself (sheeash I kinda butchered that but oh well).

I've been using the Internet since before it was the Internet (in the days of ARPAnet and BBS, using dial-up modems). Things have changed since then, mostly for the better.

Twitter, and Instagram are feeds from the creator which only the creator uses. Discord is a chatroom that quickly gets filled up with nonsense, especially when it's a popular discord with lots of members sending tons of messages. As hsbc said you don't need an account to view either of these whereas you need to have a discord account to view the chatroom. It's a whole different beast. If Jackson had a separate channel for kings wild updates, that would sort of be comparable to Twitter or Instagram but as its set up now, there are I think way too many places for updates in that discord. I get that it's set up so each deck gets its own channel and the chat is on topic, but once a deck is released, that channel will quickly die. There should be less channels on, some read only channels for kings wild deck updates (like a no 13 read-only channel). Like, you wouldn't want all updates to be in like YouTube or twitch chat or something because your followers would miss everything you're sharing, except for the die hard fans who would join every live stream you did.

Patreon member posts are paid posts, can't compare to Twitter or discord. It's like comparing UC to 52+J. Apples and oranges.

Also, side note, why can't I thumbs up posts in this sub forum?

A Discord not created properly and (more importantly) not moderated properly quickly becomes a mess. I said at the beginning I think there are too many channels on Jackon's Discord. It's almost organised more as a forum. They will adapt or it will die. I have been on some Discords for 3+ years and use them daily both to share and consume information. When implemented and used correctly they have value. If it's not for you cool. Move along nothing to see there.

I should note that my sharing a Discord link got someone's missing desk replaced (and with Jackson's personal interaction and cost).

Needing an account isn't any harder than creating a throwaway email address. There is no charge and you don't have to use a native app.

Discord isn't a reaplament for any communication method that I listed, but in my opinion it is value for some that it ffulfills and isn't done elsewhere. It's FAR from perfect and there are things I wish it would be a lot better.

It's almost certainly a forum setting; I've received notifications of likes from moderators in this thread so at least someone can like these comments

Big props for that but why does someone need to sign up for and use a third-party chat service to (successfully) contact a company??? If their contact page isn't working for them the answer shouldn't be to put the onus on the users to sign up for the correct app
