Quilling Playing Cards (Handmade Series) by Elephant (EPC) (ill. Sena Runa)

Unread post by Fud »

Hi Everyone,

I always get excited when announcing our newest deck, but this one has been well over a year in the works and I can hardly express how excited I am to put it out there.

At a time where everyone is slapping price-increasing taglines like "new", "never seen before", "original" and "groundbreaking" to their newest offerings, we are doing something different than hyping up a double-logo design. As though none of us have ever seen a deck of cards with holo foil or special inks or [insert latest price-raising feature]...

While our new project is all those things, what really sets it apart is the WAY it was developed.

Most decks are made by people in front of computers or iPads, sketching / drawing / creating everything digitally (or clicking 'fill all' with a different color)...

That does make them 'hand-drawn', but it doesn't make them 'hand-crafted'.

Our new deck IS truly hand-crafted. In the literal sense of the word.

This is our latest project which will be going live MONDAY DECEMBER 6, 7AM PST // 10AM EST on our website: Quilling Playing Cards.

This is the first in a new series we are rolling out where we partner with local, grassroots artists to take what they love and transform it into a deck of playing cards.

Each element has been literally hand crafted by the artist (nothing done in a computer), scanned and arranged into a truly unique deck. Everything, from the box and back to the numbers and letters; everything has been painstakingly made in colorful quilled paper art.

The artist behind this incredible design is Sena Runa; a world renowned quilling artist.

And what's super cool about these projects is that not just the decks, but the original artwork is up for sale as well. Even if the decks aren't your cup of tea, the quilled artwork is so incredible that it would be a fantastic addition to any collector's display. And each piece is a genuine 1-of-1 item; once it's gone, it's gone. Check out this video showcasing some of the real artwork: https://www.instagram.com/p/CXGKPLShCmf ... _copy_link

Here is the preview page to check out the bundles (quantities are all set to 0 until we launch): https://elephantplayingcards.com/produc ... ying-cards

I hope to see you on Monday, and good luck in picking up the artworks you like!

The art looks amazing! :D How much will the original pieces be?

This deck really deserves to be USPCC or Cartamundi printed though :(

Absolutely amazing! And now I'm scrambling to see if I can afford one of the last remaining bundles (including original art)!

What a fantastic project!

These look pretty cool. My partner used to do quilling; she was a very crafty person! :D

Thanks, had a few issues with the tech side of this web page, hopefully ironed them all out now.

WJPC.
I was hoping to print with USPCC, but a bunch of factors (most notable production time + past printing quality) turned me off this time.

I love Sena's work and she has made something incredible here. Thank you for taking the time to put her name in lights on this one. All too often the artist's name is kept in the dark. I hope you got to keep some original works for yourself because those are very special.

Wow didn't see this until an hour ago. Almost all of the original art was gone, but managed to snag the title. Might give it to my girlfriend as a Christmas present.
I've spent way more than I care to admit on playing cards, but I'll still buy just about anything that Lorenzo, Jackson, or Gio make.

More subtle than others, but still a one-way back. Alas, that means I'm out.

However, very beautiful design and if I were a smidgen less of a stickler, I'd have already ordered a brick.

There's so much to like about this deck. Personally, it brings back some fond memories of my grandmother, who used to quill. The art/quilling is beautiful and I love how colorful the deck is. The price is fair, too. Unfortunately, the deal breaker for me is the printer. If this was USPCC or Carta Mundi, I would've already ordered a brick. Because handling is half the equation for me, I have to pass on WJPC printed decks. A shame, really, because this is a great idea for playing cards and the art is well executed.

I am lucky enough to have one of Sena's tuckboxes she made for the project. The decks are lovely, but having the quilling in three dimensions is so special. It's a treasured piece of my playing cards ephemera collection, for sure.

I don't understand the lack of faces on the courts - it makes me think that the artist is weak at drawing faces and so decided not to
I know that would not be the case for Very rarely do courts come with anything other than simple faces that anybody could draw
I was watching this review of the Luxx Mandala deck by Caroline Ravn the other day where she criticizes the courts 'stoned' faces

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dCeFi1QZ00Q

I went and checked my Ravn decks - I cannot see that Caroline has had them modify the courts faces for her decks

It's possible she may have been able to create faces but I would imagine it would've been incredibly difficult with the quilling style. I'm not sure if you know, but these artworks were physically created by folding papers in various ways, not drawings.

Sorry, I did not realize that - never heard of quilling before, you learn something everyday.
I would never have guessed that quilling is not something you do with a quill
Thanks Kev

You might wanna check again. They're reworked. Not by much but you should be able to spot differences.

True but they are not exactly the 'happy faces' she seems to desire from the Mandalas
