Monster Pin-Up Girls - coming late 2013

Unread post by Magic_Orthodoxy »

So the goal is to post a new pin-up girl once or twice a week on my tumblr blog and at the end of the year we should have enough to make a deck of cards. Thats the plan.

Here's the current design for the back of the cards.

Awesome idea, like the illustrations. I don't like the barcode thing though.

Yeah, QR Codes are some of the worst things that have popped up in graphics the last few years. Our clients are always trying to get us to but a QR Code in their stuff. They're ugly and pretty much just a gimmicky way to get someone to check out a site. The sad thing is with this Deck is their code most likely won't even scan properly at the tiny size they have it at. Anything under 1/2" and it's not just ugly - it's also useless!

Besides that, the Back Design doesn't mesh well with the style of the illustrations. I'm guessing it wasn't created by the Illustrator. I would be curios to see what the Illustrator of the Pin-Up Girls could come up with for a colorful Back Design.

Thanks, Randy

Definitely, I really like the illustrations. It's just the back that doesn't suit the deck at the moment :) I could see an uncut sheet on my wall already :P

The QR codes are really the worst, can you even scan a QR code that small ??

As it is now, this is really far away from a deck. A "back design" that is basically a logo with a website and QR code mirrored against itself and illustrations of pin up girls. The illustrations are nice, but this needs to actually be made into a deck of cards, not just put on one.

I agree, the back design should remove the dot com and the QR code. The deck will have an add card and that will serve as the dot.com, plus they can put the dot com on the tuck case. I would just stretch the image to full back to show just the cobwebs and the "Pin Up Girls" branding.

yea for instance the FrankenChick at the top - she needs her background removed and replaced with a white background - and I highly doubt the courts (if these are the court examples) will be two way / mirrors

Someone on their site suggested that these "Jeckyl" cards be the Jokers - I agree

Hi gang!

I'm the illustrator here, and you are correct that it isn't a deck yet. Right now its just illustrations.
The plan is to draw one illustration a week, for a total of 54 cards, each one having a unique illustration on it. (And yes, the jokers will be Jekyll and Hyde.)
I do have some mock ups of what the actual cards will look like. These images include a bleed.
(And I will probably lose the QR code, too.)

Welcome Bobby! I love what I've seen so far.
One question... I didn't think there were that many monster variations out there.
Are you actually planning on 54 different characters, or will you be varying the character's poses to increase your numbers?

Keep it coming!

I have a list of 54 different monsters. (53 if you count Jekyll & Hyde as one.) Some of them are more like supernatural creatures than monsters, like Fairies, and Gnomes, that sort of stuff. I had to stretch the concept a bit to make it work. I think its more fun than showing a bunch of different vampires.
The list is still in flux, though. I'm adding and subtracting a bit if something better occurs to me.

Seeing those mock-ups doesn't change my thoughts about it at all; it's still just illustrations pasted directly on cards. Not even mirrored, let alone made into traditional court cards. I'm not saying you won't get funded, but it's not enough for me by a long shot. Proper decks with illustrations on every card are usually of the Transformation kind, where every illustration incorporates the pips. If they will look like what you posted, it will basically be what we call a novelty deck. I guess there's a market for that too, though. I do like the illustrations, so I wish you good luck regardless.

54 cards is a lot, and I'm sure you have a vision, but I bet you could get away with just doing courts and aces and leaving the pip cards as is? I wouldn't worry about mirrored images on an artistic deck like this. But that's my opinion.

MagikFingers, I agree, this is more of a novelty deck. My primary motivation is that I thought it'd be a cool way to showcase my art. I'll also publish a traditional art book when its done.

Magic_Orthodoxy, doing 54 images is a lot of work, but thats kind of the point. It'll keep me busy for the rest of the year, plus I'll have enough art to publish in a book as well as the deck of cards. I'm also posting the images on my tumblr, so that'll ensure that I've got a steady flow of new content for the people who follow the blog.

Bobby - In that case, I'll stop talking ;) You're right, playing cards are a great way to showcase your art. I'm just too used to criticizing the "technical" aspects of playing cards. I look forward to seeing your work!

I love what I see Bobby.

Love your artwork here, safe to say that you have a new follower.

Glad you're going for novelty because I'd like to see all 54 cards and there's plenty of decks out there for people who don't want novelty ones. :)
Funny enough, I don't have any novelty decks at all yet.

Oh, I think putting the dot com on the side of the tuck and on an ad card may be a better idea :)

There are some really great design suggestions going on here. I hadn't even thought about what the box might look like or even that there was such a thing as an ad card! I'm a total newb to the whole playing card thing. I'm definitely going to rework the card back. Thanks, everybody!

You should go to kickstarter.com and do a search for "playing cards" and scroll through what some people have done in the past, it also might give you some scope at how much a project this can be. Then you'll have a whole new set of questions. Ha ha.
