I saw on IG that another artist, Gregory Titus did the artwork for this. I've not been following JR's Dawn's Early Light, but I did see JR actually draw one of the courts and talk about the Joker designs. So who did the art? Did JR just do the final touches from the Gregory concept art or was there more behind this?
It was @gregorytitus on Instagram. He will be releasing more artwork in the next couple of days as the pre-order goes on, so be sure to give him a follow! As a huge fan of Sanderson, I think Gregory did a phenomenal job on this and he deserves so much love for it. It would seem KWP is taking a production role for this one as Jackson has so much on his plate with LotR and EVERYTHING else he is doing.
Given the various KWP posts about this deck and the description in the listing on the website which doesn't mention Gregory Titus at all:
The officially licensed Mistborn playing cards are an exciting collaboration between fantasy Author Brandon Sanderson and
Jackson Robinson, owner of Kings Wild Project.
I never imagined that Jackson wasn't the artist. I assume that pretty much everyone buying the deck assumes that he is. I am the only one who feels like this is at least a little bit disingenuous?
Last night I stayed up late playing poker with Tarot cards. I got a full house and four people died.

It definitely feels disingenuous. That being said I have no idea what the arrangement was between the three of them. Also when I first saw it I thought Jackson had done the artwork. Interesting that the style is so similar. It’s clear Jackson did the tuck because it looks just like reserve note.

Kinda expected to hear it explained in the promo video on the kwp site. Seems it pretty specifically said otherwise for whatever reason
A while back (can’t remember if it was a Dawns Early Light or one of his old occasional livestreams), Jackson was talking about the project and showing some early renderings. If recall correctly, Jackson did the pencils and Titus the inks/line work. Jackson noted that he wanted it finished in a different style than his own and liked the detail in the line work Titus brings.

I thought I remembered him saying Titus did the pencil and Jackson did everything else. Though it's been a while since I heard him talk about it.
I've spent way more than I care to admit on playing cards, but I'll still buy just about anything that Lorenzo, Jackson, or Gio make.

Thanks for the confirmation. Definitely helps clear things up that both worked on the courts. It could have been work for hire in this case for Gregory, but let's see if JR does mention him in anywhere besides the DEL videos.

You are correct! My memory failed me. Titus did the pencils. Jackson has Titus on his channel to discuss his approach. Its on 'Afternoon Live 015', beginning at about 1:53:00
So anyone who watched this particular segment from this particular episode from five months ago would be aware that Titus designed the characters and did a lot of the "heavy lifting". I certainly wouldn't have known if not for UC, and since Titus wasn't mentioned in any of the recent promotion leading up to the release or in any of product pages on the KWP website, I think it's safe to assume that a lot of people buying the deck aren't aware of Titus's involvement.
Last night I stayed up late playing poker with Tarot cards. I got a full house and four people died.
Not sure if this info was on the page at launch time, but it clearly states:
This project was an exciting collaboration. Artist Jackson Robinson had the incredible opportunity to enlist the help of a long-time friend and insanely talented artist, Gregory Titus, to create the final renderings of all the court cards of the Mistborn deck.
Either way, on the box you will only find "Playing Cards by Kings Wild Project", it doesn't state that JR did the drawing, opposite to all of his other decks where you will find "Designed by JR" and "Produced by KWP"...
This is not the first deck not 100% designed by JR and surely will not be the last...
Definitely won't be the last, don't know if anything changed but awhile ago he talked about having brought on a new illustrator to like take over table players. Like I get people associate kwp with Jackson, but it's a brand not a person lol it's not like they're hiding it or saying it was all Jackson when it wasn't, seems like people just trying to start drama

We weren't and are not trying to mislead anyone about Greg's involvement. It is also mentioned on the product page of each item about Greg's involvement. Greg was a work-for-hire artist and I'm not trying to dog on Greg but I don't have to acknowledge Greg at all if I don't want to. This is something he is very familiar with. Both Greg and I have worked as "work for hire artists" for almost two decades" on hundreds of products for Hasbro, Star Wars, and the like and we never once got mentioned or acknowledged by those companies for the same reason, we were both "hired artists". This, as some of noticed its say "Playing Cards By Kings Wild Project" We even went back and edit the promo video where Brandon says I'm the Artist to clear up any confusion as he didn't have time for a second take and to him, I was the artist and creator of the deck. Sorry for any confusion, hope that clears it up.

While the information about Greg wasn't on the page at launch, I'm glad to see that you have now added it to avoid any misunderstandings. I wasn't trying to suggest that you had any legal obligation to acknowledge Greg's work on the project, it was more about people's assumptions and expectations. If Hasbro puts out a product with some art on it, everyone understands that Hasbro is a company that either hired or employed an artist to draw said art. On the other hand, Kings Wild Project is essentially synonymous with Jackson Robinson, just as Oath Playing Cards is understood to be Lotrek, and Stockholm17 is Lorenzo Gaggiotti. Unless otherwise stated, people assume that decks coming out under those brands are designed and drawn by those artists, so its not quite the same as a multi-national corporation. In any case, since it has now been cleared up, I will certainly be picking up a deck since the artwork is gorgeous!

I know a lot of folks don't watch Jackson's YouTube live drawing videos, but I enjoy watching them when I can. Jackson does pass along a lot of information during these sessions. I remember Jackson discussing hiring Greg for this project and his association with Greg back with the companies Jackson mentioned. Personally, I like the artwork, whoever designed it. Also, just so folks know, Jackson also has a younger artist out of Art School that has also started working on some projects for Jackson. Jackson has talked for some time about wanting to have additional artists involved designing decks for Kings' Wild.

With all due respect, I don’t think anyone has ever bought a hasbro or Star Wars product because of who the packaging artist was.
Some people buy your decks because YOU are the artist. That’s everyone’s expectation. So if even a single person is only buying the deck because they think you did the artwork, I believe it’s important to make it known if you did not do the artwork.
Thanks for updating the product page since the time of launch.

Not at all the case, there are tons of people just like playing card collectors who collect specific toys for that very reason, which artist did the art. People even collect the Star Wars BLACK series toys because Greg did the art. As for the art of Mistborn, I still did half the art in the deck. Back, aces, laying all of Greg's drawings out. The collecting world is huge and people collect all sorts of stuff for very specific reasons. I could go down the toy isle today in any Walmart or target and tell you who the artist was that did the illustrations. I've sat at a Star Wars Celebration Convention before for 8 hours in a line of artist signing toy packages of toys that they had done illustrations for. You wouldn't believe the number of people that would roll wagons in (LOL not for my toys) for some of the bigger name artists, so they would sign their toy packages.
Just go look on ebay something like an original Kenner Star Wars toy with a Ralph Mcquarry illustration signed by the artist you will see what I say is true... lol you will think "wow I thought playing card collecting was expensive!"

All good vibes though, now ill intent on my part.
Okay.. fair enough LOL. I should've known there is a niche market for packaging art collectors too!
That being said, a Ralph Mcquarry collector would be buying the item because Ralph Mcquarry was the artist, not someone else.
Anywho... its a great deck regardless of who drew the courts. Bravo to you both, can't wait to get them in hand.
Keep in mind the "standard" deck has foil on front and back. The typical KWP standard deck is $15, so not a huge increase. What, $3? The gilded deck is about on price for a non-subscription gilded deck in one of those boxes. I didn't see any huge increase in the cost
The Crazy Squirrel Deck Hunter - Hunt decks to extinction
Actually the current prices for standard decks bought on the site is $18, so the prices are actually the same there. And I guess $45 is technically the discounted price we get as gilded subscribers, so that's a pretty good deal for a preorder.
I've spent way more than I care to admit on playing cards, but I'll still buy just about anything that Lorenzo, Jackson, or Gio make.

Both are correct technically. Subscribers get the sub decks at $15 while non-subs get it at $18. Considering this is a licensed project with full foil on both sides with a hired artist for the courts, $18 sounds acceptable.
As disappointing as the tuck is (and his other recent reprinted editions) , especially when you consider some of the great tuck designs by JR, I supposed that's the best way JR can charge below $20 for the deck. Looking at the end result, I'm happy with it, though I still think it'll look so much cooler with a Oz/Robin Hood style book tuck.

I don't know about you, but I get my standard sub for $12. The last time I bought standard decks when they were released on the site was for OZ, and they were $12 each there too.
I've spent way more than I care to admit on playing cards, but I'll still buy just about anything that Lorenzo, Jackson, or Gio make.
I was trying to make an order for a standard deck, but for some reason taxes are added to the order even though I am logged in and an international customer.
Subtotal $18.00
Shipping $16.50
Taxes $7.59
Total USD $42.09
I guess no more KWP decks for me, which is a shame as I was really pleased with the subscription decks this year and separate purchases. Cancelation of delayed shipping next year has made it to expensive, I'm sorry to say.
