Koinobori Hanafuda & Fusion (Poker) Playing Cards
Hello everyone! We hope you’re doing well.
The community here has been great to us with our other projects (Hanami, Sensu, and Night Parade), so we wanted to share some images and discuss our plans and what we are working on. We have received a lot of great feedback in the past and look forward to hearing what you think.
Note: We are still working out all the details with the quotes, kickstarter, the new vat changes, making our final decisions, and all that fun stuff.
We are excited to share our latest hanafuda project with you, Koinobori.
Koinobori will come in two formats: Hanafuda and Fusion.
A poker-sized Fusion deck printed by EPCC at their Taiwan facility with Classic Finish.
A mini-sized Hanafuda deck printed by Panda GM on thick plastic stock! Durable, waterproof, and that satisfying ‘snap’ when you throw down those cards! (^~^) *Drool* lol
(Note: Panda describes them as ‘bank card thickness’)
The decks are full bleed and the months will connect.
Each month is a different color for easy identification.
We also created two new hanafuda games.
These will come as full-color booklets similar to the booklet that came with our Night Parade Deck.
1. Chaffs & Grains. A strategic precision bidding and trick-taking game for 2-4 players. (Up to 8 with a second deck.)
Inspired by a childhood favorite called Max. Our trump-based game was designed for hanafuda cards.
This game will come with the Fusion deck.
2. Capture the Flag. A fun twist on capture games for 2 players. Push your luck while fighting for control of the flags, but be careful, your captured cards aren’t safe from your opponent.
Inspired by Koi-koi. Our game has more focus on the push your luck elements and a more dynamic capture system.
This game will come with the Hanafuda deck.
What about the tuck?
For the plastic Hanafuda deck, we are planning for a nice two piece box.
For the Fusion deck we are currently planning for a sideways tuck with a holographic effect foil on a synthetic tuck stock. Colorful, shiny, and playful (below).
We were also thinking about an optional add-on for a cute drawstring koi pouch. (We are waiting on quotes to see how that would pan out.)
Koinobori Theme
Koinobori is a playful deck series that Antonietta was inspired to create in response to the trying times that the world is going through. A positive creative project to both lift her own spirits and to bring a smile to others.
The theme is koinobori. Koinobori are carp streamers/windsocks that are traditionally flown in Japan to celebrate Children’s Day. Why carp? Because they are strong willed and spirited fish.
Card Backs
We are still deciding on the card backs. Here are a few we are thinking about.
We are also wondering if the plastic hanafuda decks should have a textured back (like many hanafuda), however, we do not know if Panda has that ability.
What is a Fusion deck?
Since traditional hanafuda cards lack pips and indices, we designed our own hanafuda indices. We combined these indices with traditional hanafuda imagery and standard poker indices to create a multipurpose deck that could be used to play both Eastern and Western games. The Fusion deck is also a great way to learn and teach hanafuda.
We modified our Fusion indices.
If you are familiar with our previous Fusion decks, then you will notice that we simplified the Fusion indices a bit more.
What is Hanafuda?
Hanafuda (known in Korea as 'Hwatu') are floral-themed playing cards that are rich in symbolism and popular in Japan, Korea, and Hawaii. Hanafuda cards have 12 suits. Each suit is named for a month (e.g. June) and each month is represented by a flower (e.g. Peony).
Hanafuda can be used to play numerous games, including traditional classics such as Koi-Koi, Hachi-Hachi (88), Go-Stop, and many more.
When is the Kickstarter?
We have not yet set a date for the Kickstarter launch, but we will post an announcement here when the time comes. To ensure you don’t miss it, we encourage you to join our mailing list. (^_^)
We’ll post a preview link to the Kickstarter page once it is ready.
What about the Night Parade Word game?
If you followed our previous Night Parade project, you probably know that we are also working on a word game. We were originally planning on launching our word game next, but Covid delayed the testing phase, so we decided to move along with this hanafuda series first. (But don’t worry, it is coming!)
We’d love to hear what you think about our new Koinobori release.
Thank you for taking the time to read our post! (^_^)
We look forward to reading your feedback!

Thank you, Harvonsgard! Antonietta was holding her breath the whole time waiting for someone to make the first comment. I didn’t think she was going to make it. (^_^)

Re: Koinobori Hanafuda & Fusion (Poker) Playing Cards
These aren't the kind of decks I collect, but it's clear that a lot of effort and care went into the cards and the project as a whole. That deserves kudos

Very interested indeed. Personally I like the far right back design although second from left is good as well. Very cool and unique deck!

Oh, you guys! After 3 amazing hanafuda decks, I didn't expect the next one to be so different and FUN! I love these! I will be there with bells on for both decks. For backs, I would choose a) far right, b) far left. The near left colors are also good, but I don't like the word in the center.

After contemplating over the backs, I'd say far right with just a tad less black would be my absolute favorite.

Here is a size comparison of poker, mini, and regular hanafuda cards.
Important: the Koinobori cards in the image are all paper prototypes and do not represent the final product. The Koinobori mini cards will be printed on thick plastic.

Re: Koinobori Hanafuda & Fusion (Poker) Playing Cards
I tried to let it sink in but I'm still not a fan of the diffraction foiled tuck box. Maybe it's because I used to have koi, but I wanna see white, reds, oranges, blacks, blues when thinking about koi.
Some highlights with diffraction foil to represent sunlight being reflected from the fish scales are a dope idea but to have it as a main actor without any colour support is kinda ...
Just my two cents.

Re: Koinobori Hanafuda & Fusion (Poker) Playing Cards
Antonietta played around with the tucks a bit more to add a tad more color and playfulness. Thoughts? Like the simplicity of the first? Or the added color of the new one?Harvonsgard wrote: ↑Fri Apr 23, 2021 2:23 pm I tried to let it sink in but I'm still not a fan of the diffraction foiled tuck box. We liked the simplicity of the holofoil, but we can also see the merits in the more colorful one. Now we’ll sleep on it and see what we think of it in the morning. Lol.

Re: Koinobori Hanafuda & Fusion (Poker) Playing Cards
Hello everyone, we have been busy busy getting the Kickstarter together for Koinobori and the new editions of our Hanami & Sensu decks out to the printer. We hope to have a launch date for Koinobori soon and an instock date for the new editions soon. Yay!
And, thanks again for all the votes. I was certain we had posted a response before, but I don’t see it...
In the meanwhile, we had another question about our upcoming Koinobori Fusion deck that we would like to run by you all...
Our original plans for the Fusion format were EPCC Classic Finish, but we are considering making the Fusion deck plastic instead. (Note: the standard plastic playing card thickness, not the bank card thickness plastic that the Hanafuda deck will use.)
We thought this might be nice because:
1. It fits the koi theme,
2. and the family friendly theme.
3. Durable.
4. Washable & Waterproof.
Thoughts on plastic cards for the Fusion format? This is more of an art/play/use deck, however, we still want it to be a quality and awesome deck that we can be proud of.
We haven’t made any decision yet, but we would love to hear your thoughts.
Is this an awesome idea? A no-go deal-breaker? Cool either way?
Thanks!
Also, we had to share this too. Mockup of the textured backs on the Hanafuda cards. It adds to the printing price, but it sure is awesome. (^_^)

Re: Koinobori Hanafuda & Fusion (Poker) Playing Cards
When I started collecting cards I had to draw lines in the sand. Poker cards it was. High quality plastic coated paper playing cards it was.
Plastic handles like crap was my reasoning. Paper just feels so much better in hand. So, I sticked to that for a long time until two events: Tu Do and a Copag Neo design that wasn't available as paper cards. So with grinding teeth I bought my first plastic decks and the experience could've not been more eye-opening.
Both handle awesome. I can faro them, easy shuffles, great snap, overall great performance that in my experience doesn't have to hide behind paper cards. The Tu Do are even able to perform great fans (and I'm not that great at fanning).
TL;DR: I still prefer paper playing cards - not gonna lie - but a design being on plastic doesn't throw me off anymore and I do agree that for a get-as-much-play-out-of-it-as-possible-deck plastic is the better choice.

Most concern about going plastic would be cost. If the cost of the deck can be the same or very close to it I have no objection to 100% plastic.
