The Smiling Back really takes me back to the 70s, when the yellow Smiley Face buttons first came out, and was EVERYWHERE.

Know your decades! Those are expresions from the 80s or 90s!DukeBoy wrote:Like, totally! Ohh my gawd!
I just checked. The song "Valley Girl" came out in 1982, and the film of the same name came out in 1983, so these are, like totally, 1980s expressions.

I have been picking up some cigarette decks these past few weeks. This one came in today. It was touted as having an original indian seal ...not sure if those were rare at the time. My deck is sealed of course but I am adding a pic to show what the cards look like

Interesting, Sharpie!
Since my focus is on decks with custom courts, my favorite Cigarette decks in my collection are probably the Virginia Slims Cigarettes deck with the all-female courts, and a Camel Cigarettes deck where the courts are all portrayed by Joe Camel!

Re: The "Hey, look what I added to my collection!" thread
Well, we successfully moved into our new home yesterday. My entire collection is out in the garage, mostly in thirty or so big (80-deck) BCW boxes.
It was nerve-wracking, and I had to explain multiple times, to various friends helping us with the move, just what was in all of those "friggin' boxes", and how I wanted those boxes treated.
I hope to start going through those boxes in the coming days and weeks, cataloguing what is in them, scanning cards from some interesting decks, and showing those scans here.

A limited edition Sukiyaki Django deck with artwork based on the 2007 Japanese western by Takashi Miike. The backs are the same as the front of the box.

I had not heard of the film, and wonder if the recent Django Unchained was basecd on it. (IMDB, here I come!)

Re: The "Hey, look what I added to my collection!" thread
Django of 1966, and another movie called Fistful of Dollars of 1964, were both spaghetti westerns by Sergio Corbucci and Sergio Leone, and both were based on an earlier Japanese movie by Akira Kurosawa called "Yojimbo" of 1961. Yojimbo used the theme of a lone man (a ronin) happening into a battle between 2 gangs. So, this has come full circle with the Sukiyaki Django being a remake of a spaghetti western that was a remake of a Kurosawa. Japan and Italy playing tennis.

You also should mention "Last man standing" with Bruce Willis

Re: The "Hey, look what I added to my collection!" thread
Only 2 players in a game of tennis
There are probably many more movies influenced by this particular Kurosawa film. Many of his films have had that kind of influence and are still very watchable and enjoyable today, rather like Shakespeare's plays.
Back on topic: The Poop Deck! This is a repro of a 16th century satirical deck from Germany by Peter Flotner. There are many poops in the deck and one of them is on a pillow in the foreground of the top left card. Some images in this odd and often disgusting deck are too rude to show here. Sorry for the poor photo.

Re: The "Hey, look what I added to my collection!" thread
Here are two decks I received in yesterday's mail:
==========[ PontMeyer ]==========
==========[ PontMeyer ]==========
==========[ KodakExpressSkat ]==========
A Dutch advertising deck for Construction/HomeBuilder company PontMeyer, this deck was a gift from a Dutch Bridge-playing friend.
She (the friend) knows that I am obsessed with decks having non-standard (custom) courts, and with the color purple.
So when she saw this deck, with its courts of construction workers (Jacks), office workers (Queens) and executives (Kings), and its purple Spades and Clubs, she immediately thought of me.
The faces of the pip/number cards (not seen here, other than the Spade Ace) have construction-related background patterns (wood wall panelling, stucco, parquet wood flooring, brick wall)
A lovely advertising deck.
Thanks, Venka!
Another advertising deck, for Kodak Express. - . Not a gift, I bought it on eBay.
I don't know what ducks have to do with Kodak Express, but the ducks on the deck's courts are each holding a Kodak product (a camera, a slide, a photograph, etc)

Re: The "Hey, look what I added to my collection!" thread
==========[ Abraxas ]==========
Published in 2012 by the Abraxas "coffee house" in Amsterdam, Netherlands, this deck commemorates the 20th anniversary of the coffehouse's existance.
the coffehouse's mascot or logo is evidently a raven (or perhaps a crow), and all of the courts are portrayed by ravens/crows, dressed in exotic royal costumes and partaking of - ahem - some of the coffeehouse's smokable merchandise (sometimes via a hookah/waterpipe, sometimes just from a joint.
There are two different jokers. One (in my display) shows yet another black bird, sitting in a lotus position, with a joint in one hand/wing, a marijuana leaf in the other. The other joker shows the black bird as an ominous figure..
I first learned of this deck in this very thread (I forget who posted about it, but thanks!
Here are two web pages where it can be ordered from the Abraxas Souvenir store:
A single-deck version:
http://webshop.abraxas.tv/miscellaneous ... -deck.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
A double-deck version:
http://webshop.abraxas.tv/abraxas-playi ... k-set.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The double-deck version is what I got. I am surprised (but only mildly disappointed) that the two decks in the double-deck version have identical backs (similar backs with contrasting color schemes would have been preferable).
The shipping costs on the above linked pages are steep, so I asked a friend who lives near Amsterdam to pick me up a set the next time she was in town, and she did!
All in all, a very cool deck!
